Yeah I should start thinking about what apps I do want to be able to use once I have my linux system. I know most of my essential apps that I use now have Mac and linux versions.

Apps are important, but more important in my view is the files it produces and reads.
If you can get a Linux app that can read/write that same file type, the apps you use are kinda irrelevant beyond personal preference.
It’s why I write in Markdown. I can load those plaintext .md files in pretty much anything on any OS and they can be read.

Yeah they kinda are lol, I had one of the early ones way back and biggest issue for me was not having left and right mouse click buttons. If you are going to go apple way, I kind of would suggest the external touch pad, that way you at least familiar with how it works.
they are! they are a pain to use because of their unergonomic design. the touch gestures might be nice, but probably not worth the carpal tunnel tradeoff

By the way, is there a particular reason why not every software is available on the App Store, like Discord?
Because some developers choose not to ship on the App Store - that way they’re free of Apple’s rules.
The rules they’re against could be moderation, or it could be money. I think in Discord’s case it’s probably money.
Monetisation and the cut apple would take is my guess for most cases

So after a month with my Macbook, I can say I do like it but I really haven't done anything that I wasn't doing already with my iPad, gotta get busy.
If I ever were going to go for laptop again I think I might go for an iPad Pro instead of a MacBook. Just not sure how free it would be in terms of programming and running on weird stuff, for that a MacBook is probably better. If I also have my Mac mini then probably iPad but if I will only have one machine then MacBook.
You can remote into your Mac mini to make the iPad more like a Mac.
So long as you have a robust data connection at both ends, it should work well for complex tasks.
For more basic stuff, iPadOS will handle it fine.

Not at all impressed with anything they showed today. I’ll keep my iPhone 15 Pro for another 12 months.
The biggest draw for me is all the camera stuff, I dont use my "real" camera at all so would love to have some real good camera in my phone

I think the most exciting product is the iPhone Air.
Essentially a Pro, but not a chonker.
If you don’t use your phone a lot but need a bit of umpfh when you do, it’s kinda perfect.
Not for me though. My next phone will almost certainly be a larger screen one, or next year’s folding model.

Yes, I played quite a bit back in the intel days, and reinstalled Steam on all my Macs after the apple silicon native version of the client this year, although I haven't played much this year

It looks fine most of the time but since it's dynamic, it can look like ass depends on the background, like it's quite some 2000s photoshop plastic/glass sfx people used to do iwhen everyone learned how to do transparency with computer softwares lol.

What are you doing on it that would benefit from the small performance uplift of the M5 versus the M4?
If you can’t come up with a good answer, get the M4. Apple’s upgrade treadmill is more about keeping prices high than actually doing tangible gen on gen improvements. The M4 will be supported for years and years to come. Heck, they still support the M1.
I guess the next question you need to ask is emulating what systems?
Will it make a tangible difference on the systems you’re planning to emulate?
My suspicion is the M5 will likely perform better in line with its improvements. Is that worth the difference in cost?
It once again comes down to specifics.
I’d avoid the “latest and greatest” upgrade treadmill if you can, and focus on getting the system that’s right for your needs instead. Might help for you to lay those out and see if the cheaper M4 is meeting those needs or you need the M5. Depending on which system you’re emulating, you may tilt one way or the other.
Also avoid the nebulous “future proofing” - buy a product for now, not next year. I always thought I should “future proof” to avoid the upgrade treadmill, and I wind up unsatisfied a year later because I’ve spent a lot of money and I got caught out by features exclusive to a future model anyway.
So instead I just look at my needs in the moment, focus on those and make my decision that way.
In Sweden, with education pricing (which you can freely select if your stated intention is to gift to a student, if you are a student, or if you have some work role at a university), the macbook pro 14" M5 is only 30% more expensive than that model (19500 SEK vs 15000 SEK).
I just bought one the other week, and it is really nice. Aesthetics, build quality, and display quality are a notch above other laptops in that price range. The M5 chip is also pretty great, with a notable speed bump for both the CPU and GPU compared with M4.
I still really like Apples hardware designs from the late 90s and early 2000s; and I appreciate watching these Youtubers turning these old cases into functioning new computers utilizing the M4 Mac Mini:

So I picked up my S24 Ultra yesterday to keep it up to date. It downloaded apps and updates fine. Today it doesn't fucking work. I have tried everything short of factory reset the phone. Apps from Galaxy Store download just fine though, so who the fuck knows.

Turned out it was my WiFi, connected to another network and it worked.Sounds about right what I would expect from android.
