Well, although I don't usually come here, I knew this piece of news would make a conversation in here so I wanted to share my thoughts.

So if you don't want to read it my tl;dr would be TioChuck is probably going in te right direction.

So here comes my explanation.

this sounds more like an usual investment and not entirely focused on gaming, in fact, today Epic showed a new video about UE running real time vfx so I could see this investment in multiple ways, one of course is gaming but more focused into social aspect (their already in place fortnite agreements) and not really about exclusivities but in my opinion the main focus here could be UE in terms of not only cinema industry for their movie division (even tho they were thinking about selling it) and the revenue that could come from UE in terms of royalties for them,I mean, the purchase was from main company and not focused on playstation division but as a general stake purchase.

Also, as eonden has pointed out on a different place, their stake is 1.5% so it's not a big investment which could point in just a little revenue stream from indirect technology usage.

Anyway, if you want any indication of how HZD (and DS if you want to include it) are doing, check both global top sellers and compare, EGS and Steam. :cat-heart-blob:

Is Horizon doing that bad on Steam and Blands 3, RDR 2 and Control are simply the best sellings games on EGS these days or is there something wrong with EGS top seller list? Like it's rarely updated or it's more a curated list and not truly showing the top sellers?

HZD and BL3 are doing extremely well on Steam, the first one has been on top seller list since pre-orders went up (except the last two days of the sale) and BL3 has been on par with Stisfactory this sale, RDR2 just passed 1M on Steam and Control, well, we will see next month.

Global top seller list on EGS is manual and has been like that (exactly the same games) since last week, nothing has moved so it's impossible to know the performance of HZD and DS on EGS while we can see that by revenue both are 4th and 5th on Global top seller on Steam right now.

So,..what does that do exactly? Downloading the games you own just not be using EGS?
Yep. from the github: "Legendary is an open-source game launcher that can download and install games from the Epic Games platform on Linux and Windows. "

If i recall, not even EGS works on Linux natively, so this is.... whoa. it'll have a cart too before you know it

It is a command-line tool to replace the EGS launcher. Apparently, it could be useful for Linux users.

The same dev wrote another similar tool before: This is what the README tells about it:

This was a PoC ("Proof of Concept") I wrote because I was wondering if I can launch Diabotical from my Desktop, or Steam, or whatever, without having to boot up the EGS client each time.

Let's face it, the Epic Game Store launcher is kind of crap. It runs an Unreal Engine application to show you a website. This in turn means that on a laptop it will run on the dedicated GPU, even if it's not doing anything, causing unnecessary battery drain and your fans to spin up.
Curiously the games on the Epic Game Store do not seem to rely on some form of communication with the launcher for their online functionality, instead they get launched with an OAuth token they can use to directly talk to Epic's online services.

Whatever the reason, we can make use of this design choice to run and play games (online) without the EGS Launcher.
Since rktlnch relies on EGS being installed to work it wouldn't directly work on Linux. However I'm sure somebody could adapt the underlying authentication process to work from within e.g. Lutris to launch EGS games on Linux. You would just need some kind of way to obtain the login credentials.
I find it cool that the EGS services do not actually require the official launcher. This is part of the "open" aspect of Epic services, I would guess.

Just learned something on Twitter regarding EGS playtime tracking. After 48 hour or 72 hours (I think it was 48 hours), EGS won't show playtime in hours any longer, but in days. That sucks hard. Love seeing my hours in a game.

I actually think Uplay does it the best with both hours and minutes no matter how long you have played, then Steam and GOG that shows in hours. EGS then in days and console profiles (PSN and Xbox) shows nothing with certain first party game exceptions on Xbox (like FH4 shows playtime, but Sea of Thieves does not).

Is the EGS - Top 20 Sellers list updated daily?
Because Death Stranding does not seem to be on there, at all.
Hello, since the week prior to the pre-orders of HZD I have been keeping track of the EGS top 20 sellers and as lashman said, nothing has moved since then, that's 3 weeks at least (cause' I started looking at it the last week of June) although I suspect the list hasn't moved since god knows when,
please don't tell me the topsellers list requires to be updated manually by sergey
I don't know who should be doing it but yes, it's a manual process, not automated nor by revenue nor copies sold.

Out in Early Access on EGS.
According to Eurogamer it is a very cute, but ultimately empty experience.

Polygon agrees.

The game seems to have been rebooted several times through development changing some of the core ideas of it so I am not surprised it feels a bit like just the base.

I only heard it mentioned as a Pokemon style game. Did they add the farm sim and card game elements, or have those always been planned?

Like I thought. There is nothing substantial to Ooblets. It even has the only Early Access warning on EGS while other Early Access games on EGS did not or have not an EA warning. (they should have, but that is beside the point here)

I speculated several posts earlier that someone (either Epic or the devs) probably thought that an Early Access warning was a must-have for this game because it was so unfinished or broken and feared backlash. Don't know about broken, but going from reviews, it is severely unfinished and lacking content or long-term playability.

It takes up a lot of hours to berate fans on social media which leads to less time devoted to developing their game. That being said, early trailers made it seem like it was a bait and switch - all gameplay footage was made for the trailer and the game itself doesnt really exist outside of that. And every trailer looking completely unrelated to the last aside from the player character only further influences my thoughts on tis.

You were basically a seal-clubbing puppy-kicking terrorist if you criticized the game. The discourse around the game brought out the worst in deflecting criticism. You could see it in threads about the game. First, some questions about the viability of the game(play), then the criticism about the conduct of the husband and their tone-deaf and insulting "PR".
And SUDDENLY! "We are being harassed" and now you were the bad guy.

This isn't only happening with small devs. EA/Bioware did it with Andromeda as an example (dozens of pages of laughing about the quality and facial animations of Andromeda and then suddenly it was harassment of a female developer within Bioware who was part of the team who made the animations)

Companies jump on any deflection they can get to drown out criticism. Would anyone think about the poor developers who poured sweat, blood and overtime into finishing the product, any criticism breaks their heart!

At a certain point, when legitimate criticism gets married to harassing/sexism bullshit, usually I either just walk away or focus on beating back the bullshitters. Time sorts out the legitimacy of game quality complaints, always. Let them deflect because at the end they're one ones left holding the bag of an unfished and broken game with a bad reputation. The harassment and bullshit from so called 'gamerz' is a legitimacy problem WE have to face. Want to stop deflections? Then we need to clean our house.

What if it's not our house and we have no control over, say, people on twitter or 4chan or KIA? There's a point where the deflection is just refusal to acknowledge criticism.
We can criticize the dev for their own shitty behaviour, and still call out those who would use such antics as a basis for harassment and toxicity for their own means on those same platforms. It's the basis of this thread.

I still stand by what I said. Once it gets to a certain target harassment of a particular dev, its worth it to call out the terrible shit first. You can mention the technical problems with a game but to me its better to leave the personal stuff aside in the heat of the moment.

A lot of bad faith between devs and their audience has built up these past ten years. Its a real shame.

The problem is that a lot of devs explicitly use that stuff to avoid criticism for shitty actions, even sometimes amplifying their reality.

That is not to discount the reality of harassment but honestly there has been some really crappy behaviors that poisoned the well for other victims. That's why I am wary about this. Everyone deserves empathy and kindness but some of them exploit it.

Glumberland were genuinely hateful in their response to the Epic backlash that they themselves incurred and it’s been really enlightening to see people who claim they’re all about social justice immediately forget the devs being actively ableist and classist because a video game is “cute” (it’s not but whatever.) If the game spent something like six years in development and is still releasing with barely any content I don’t even know what to say about their ability to finish it.
They were probably prioritizing climate change over game development.
They used the money they ripped off from their Patreon subscribers and Double Fine on top of the EGS contract to move to Seattle. They won’t be affected by climate change. Until Tim’s money runs out of course, which given how they’ve spent so far may very well be soon.

It started more as a pure cute-sy Pokemon style game, then they added the farm sim and they had issues with making the Pokemon fight (because that is one of the problems of making Pokemon cuter, that "dog fighting" is anatema with the topic) so they changed it to dance battles. Which ended up making it focus less on the Pokemon aspect and more on the farming (as Stardew Valley started to become more and more popular). I aint blaming them for changing genres, but launching with few content after the time (for instance, 2 years of being shown in the Xbox reel) shows that there were issues on development (in this case rethinking some core parts which ended up good I guess).

Sounds like they never worked out what the game's identity was.

I'm not a fan of Glumberland. I think the way they acted was kinda scummy, but looking at the state of the game they probably did the right thing to take the Epic cash.

I'll be ignoring it when it arrives on Steam.

That's the problem. Wasser straight up said that with the EGS contract, they don't need the Patreon money to finish the game anymore - but they're keeping it open for future donations for... no real reason, and even made the EGS announcement on the 1st of the month, when Patreon charges all of its subscribers.

Yeah, time to blacklist Tripwire, it's a shame, I really love Killing Floor, Red Orchestra and Rising Storm, but now that they are happily in Timmy's pocket I don't want to support them anymore.
