When switching, there's a few things to decide:

what hardware are you using?
If you use AMD, you should be good. If you use NVIDIA, your results may vary. (its not horrible, but NVIDIA often has issues of Linux)

what is your focus?
depending on what you do with your computer, you should consider dual-booting. Some specialist software either have no Linux versions or no great open-source alternatives. If you mainly do gaming, web browsing, listening to music, doing office you should have no problems.

what distro suits you?
I would recommend a user-friendly distribution like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. I personally use Manjaro (because Valve recommended it at some point and I just stuck with it)

what desktop environment is for you?
there is a great range of desktop environments out there. I recommend KDE, but its best to check out your options, maybe watch a youtube video showcasing what the offer, how the user experience is, etc

then, the installation and migration:
installing Linux is fairly easy. A distro like Ubuntu will let you boot into a live environment where you can try the system out without installing anything. (You might have to disable SecureBoot, and select your bootable USB stick in your BIOS as the startup volume)
From there, you can then start the installer that will guide you through the process. Dont forget to make sure your data is safe! You can choose between dualbooting Windows+Linux or installing Linux alone. If you dualboot, Linux will set up a bootmenu that lets you choose your OS every startup.

after that, daily usage:
Linux can take a while to get used to and you might run into problems. The small userbase (compared to Windows) of it means that software might not run, hardware might not be supported (which is why trying things out via the live environment is a very good idea). Most distros have a forum where lots of questions get answered; and theres Reddit to search for solutions if you run into problems.

What are my options outside of google sheets and MS office online if I want spreadsheets that need to be viewable by people online who are not me? Nothing super serious, just like my game completion sheet and such.
I looked around a bit and couldn't really find a satisfactory answer.

NextCloud with ONLYOFFICE on some cloud provider who I trust?

Is it fair to assume if something runs on Deck, I will have no issues on linux desktop?

In most cases: yes — but I had issues with select games when I was still using an NVIDIA GPU. For example, AC Valhalla and Immortals – Fenyx Rising had weird issues with my GTX 1070 Ti but worked on the Deck. If you have AMD hardware, you're closer to the Deck and its more likely that games run without problems on desktop Linux. I certainly noticed games giving me less problems since I use and AMD GPU, but I also had, in general, very few problems... but that's not to say they're non-existant. One oddity I remember is one game refusing to run without the "SteamDeck=1" launch command tricking it into believing its indeed running on a Deck (I forgot which game that was, though)

Anyway, your safest bet is to check ProtonDb first. you can filter desktop reports.

You also reminded me, a good way to get oneself familiarized with Linux is, of course, using the desktop mode on the Steam Deck — if you have one (and a USB-C dock, ideally). That way you can try it out yourself.

It’s just a matter of taking my time with it. I’ve had this account for decades now, but I will probably keep it as a dumpster for all the stupid shit I dont care about but need a one off verification.

Been thinking I might do TikTok still and YouTube. I am creating my game now and do need to actually do some promoting. It also since I want it to be inspired by real people in Paris I also want to be able to photograph people on the street and tell them what it is for, and having YouTube and TikTok to show will definitely be a plus for people.

Too bad both companies fucking suck.

And don’t mention loops or peer tube or help me god! lol

To be fair, Youtube is so culturally engrained now it will be very hard to drop.

Ultimately with these tech giants the only realistic hope is that somehow some entity, EU or whatever else, ends up forcing them into splitting apart and by some miracle the people who end up running the new smaller entity are not complete pieces of shit.

Like I mentioned before it would be a practical impossibility for me to move away from Whatsapp, other than going back to classic SMS. And that's just me personally.
It's my understanding that while the US is Apple iMessage land Whatsapp is huge in most of Europe, but no idea what rules in South America for example. I feel like that's also going to be a Whatsapp land due to the price of Apple products. It's just too ingrained now. At least Whatsapp doesn't require me to have a facebook account. :blobvomiting:

So with stuff like google account, I'm not going to get rid of mine, but I'll minimize its usage to the best of my abilities.

Which reminds me I should continue my migration. I think I have moved over about 99% of accounts saved in Bitwarden. so now it's just a process of mostly waiting just to be sure.
In that remaining 1% is metacouncil btw. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I still have about 300 email in 2 different gmail boxes I need to check. I'm basically just looking at every single thing that has ever emailed those addresses and seeing if there's an account there that wouldn't be in my password manager for some reason. If the login is entirely passwordless I wouldn't have it saved in bitwarden, so I want to be sure. And even after that I would still wait, just to be sure again.
I have 2 gmails that have now been empty almost a year so I'm going to be deleting them soon.

Yeah WhatsApp is the big one, hopefully more and more people do move away from that. Im so asocial right now I guess that deleting my WhatsApp didnt change much lol since my gf and a few friends that I regularly talk to all have iMessage

Unfortunately I cannot not use Whatsapp if I want to keep in touch with basically anyone else lol iMessage isn't a thing here.

Been thinking about domains again, maybe I should buy one and put my email through that. Then if I ever change my email provider again, I don't have to migrate hundreds of accounts again, ever.

Just gotta think of something good. I used to own beerlake.net a while back but it wasn't really a great name, just a quick impulse buy where the name was a dumb play on lake names that Intel's been using as their codenames. Truly riveting. I also had ieatpancakes.com at some point. 🥞

Need to think about it a bunch, but I think I want something where I can combine the domain.tld to make a word. Like, pars.nip, but I don't think nip is a domain. :bonk:
And I wouldn't get it if it was.

The risk with having email tied to domain is the risk of changing domains and such. I found it more secure to have it tied to gmail for example. Like my first email is from almost 30 years ago, that I can still access, but domains have come and gone many times.

With that said, I really also should set up some email adress tied to my domain.
 
I’d say owning your own domain for email is better than relying on Google.

If your @gmail.com email is used for everything, you’re basically stuck with that address unless you’re willing to go through 100s of accounts to update. That means you’re basically at Google’s mercy for your digital life.

Bad idea, imo.

Meanwhile, you@domain.tld is yours. If you switch who provides your mail server, your address can move with you.

I have a domain that’s me@myname.tld. I am unlikely to discard that domain versus changing who provides my email, which has changed several times in the last 20 years.

Just come up with a name you’ll never change. Online aliases come and go (I also have an email for that, which is a custom domain more likely to change), but a domain that’s my real name is basically with me for life.

I had no "real" attachment to any I've owned before. Like I had my homepage at both beerlake and pancakes but I barely used it or updated the blog on it, and eventually it was more just a dumping ground for random meme gifs and jpgs in one of the sub folder I had there. Never made an email on any of my domains either, probably ultimately because at the time I saw google's services as not bad. How quaint.

But like pancakes domain was just too long of a name anyway and kind of annoying to write.

I don't think I want a domain with my name though. It's not that my name is some secret or anything, first name in particular definitely isn't, but it would feel odd to register on a forum or social media or whatever with that email. At least to me it would feel weird. Seeing my full name in any "internet only" context is basically just a big nope from me.

At somepoint I just need to look at a full list of tld's that a normie can buy for a reasonable amount of money and maybe that will spark my imagination. The problem is that the most flexible tld's are the 2 letter country ones and I don't think I want that either. So maybe my doma.in plan is bad from the start and I should just settle for .bike or .town or something. Choices are hard.
