Ion Fury

ION MAIDEN is now ION FURY.

While Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her codename defusing bombs for the Global Defense Force, when evil transhumanist mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes the members of his cybernetic cult onto the streets of Neo DC, she knows it’s time to start causing explosions instead of preventing them.

Her quest to slay Heskel leaves a trail of carnage throughout huge, multi-path levels filled with gigantic explosions, more secret areas than we can count, and inhuman foes behind every corner. There’s no regenerating health here; stop taking cover and start running and gunning.

Shelly’s crusade to take down Heskel’s army will see her leave destruction in her wake with a wide arsenal of weapons, complete with alternate fire modes and different ammo types. Her signature revolver, the tri-barreled Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with both single shots and Old West-style hammer fanning action. Who needs a regular shotgun when you can load buckshot into your grenade launcher? Violent, over-the-top Bowling Bombs rip enemies apart with ease.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of mandatory checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But, just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean we've ignored all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint have taken the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

What to expect from the full version of ION FURY upon release:

  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood.
  • Experience the original BUILD engine on steroids, pumped up and ready to rock again after 20 years!
  • Duck, jump, climb, swim, and blast your way through 7 exciting zones packed with multiple levels of mayhem!
  • A beautiful game world assembled from thousands of hand-crafted textures and sprites
  • An awe-inspiring arsenal of devastating weapons, including multiple ammo types and alternate fire modes. Tri-barreled revolvers, grenade launchers, and heat-seeking smart bombs are your best friends!
  • The classic '90s FPS action you love, meshed with modern inventions like locational damage and seamless level transitions
  • ZERO PROCEDURAL GENERATION. All levels are hand made and full of multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • Thumping soundtrack comprised of true tracked module music, in authentic FastTracker 2 format
  • Easy access on to level editor and other development tools on day one, plus Steam Workshop support

I imagine having a fight with music lawyers wasn't a particularly appealing prospect. New name is decent and it could help the game stand out. Also, I like games with the name Fury in the title. Very 90s.

Looks so fantastic. They've really refined the gameplay in the teaser levels they have out so far, so it's great fun now.

Ion Fury :: ION MAIDEN IS NOW ION FURY - RELEASE DATE, NEW BIG BOX!

Just a heads-up the price will be raised from $20-$25 on 7/18, so if you're thinking early adoption, might want to hop on board sooner than later.

Though I've a great fondness for 90s era PC shooters, I never did have much exposure to the Build engine titles. It's an odd blind spot considering I've played virtually everything else of note back in the day.

So it'll be refreshing going in blind, enjoying retro goodness layered with modern QoL & performance bumps.

Think I'm gonna bite on that $20 price point.

yeah ... everyone should buy it before the price goes up ... even the early version was already REALLY damn good ... so it's definitely worth the money!

and thanks for the heads up :)

I'm just started the game and it's great (I played duke 3d for the first time like 4 years ago... hence my opinion being 100% organic and nostalgia-free).

My only complaint is that it kind of runs like ass! If I turn vsync on it feels as if it's running at 45fps, and the game is way too fast to tolerate that. Adaptive vsync does nothing and the only acceptable way to play is to turn it off... but I end up with some nasty screen tearing.
I mean, I know it's not the best GPU in the world (GTX 970), but I should be able to run this game running on a Turing-complete thingamajig made in Minecraft.

Oh, and it's the first time I've seen a "FPS offset" option...

It's kicking my ass, and I'm loving it. I wish Shelley was chattier to be honest. It's a little too quiet for my tastes for a retro shooter
I also wish I knew how to work with eduke files to mod this. I think it'd be fun to play with

bit dissappointed so far but I'm only two levels in. Blood's better. DUSK is better.

I should have expected this since it's so obviously duke 3d inspired and i have a lot of the same problems.

I can 100% make this jump but there's a dumb invisible wall blocking me. I know I'm the only one in the world but I fucking despise invisible walls. I believe that's a secret area that I missed as well. I don't know how I'm actually suppose to get there.

I can make this jump since there is no invisible wall but I'm not suppose to be there and my only option is to reload my save. Both of these are from Level 3. You can't have these super obscure secrets and have stuff like this in it. You gotta playtest your game more.:disapproval-blob:

I also really hate the spider and drone enemies. shooting things with small hitboxes is never enjoyable. one of the reasons I bounced off Prey reboot. big chunky enemies please.

And finally the fall damage is insane. You take so much for how little you fall and it completely stops your momentum for a second. There are tons of climbing and platforming sections and even jumping off a staircase completely fucks you over if there are enemies near by. It's incredibly unfun to have your movement fucked up like that. remove the fall damage completely.

I'm probably considered nitpicking but these things are destroying the game for me. I've played for an hour and I'm not too happy so far. Blood Remaster was more fun.

I disagree with you about Dusk, and the Blood remaster is weak (better free user versions, but invisible walls suck and shouldn't be part of game design. Voidpoint, tear those walls down.

I will agree with him on the flying droid enemies. god damn were they annoying as hell. Go from perfect health to 30HP trying to stop one of them, let alone three. fuck that noise. Then again I'm playing on hard for own amusement so that might be why

Love Maiden, but that lawsuit was so lame

That's like when Metallica went after Napster or when Slipknot went after Burger King for that Chicken Fries commercial

just stfu

it sucks when you're reminded that all your favorite metal bands are just rich cry-baby dickholes, and a lot of their angst and aggression which personally speaks to you is just corporate calculated nonsense

but that's none of my business though

I'm playing on Normal and I haven't really had any issues with the flying enemies. The Loverboy's lock-on feature is good for them, and if you constantly circle strafe around, it's fairly easy to avoid damage. Ion Maiden is a very fast and frantic game. I don't think it's unfair in the sense that WWII GI was, for example.

I kinda pity the people who are going to eventually play this game on a gamepad on consoles, though. The high levels of verticality, the extremely fast movement, and such are not conducive to two analogue sticks. Unless of course they adjust the difficulty for the console versions. I feel like the game would benefit from a weapon wheel, also.

That's just the way it is. That was obviously something their legal team, label, whatever, went after. Dickinson or Harris didn't sit there on their desks browsing Steam and getting pissed off at a game called Ion Maiden. They almost surely don't even know of its existence.

I mean, corporations are selling you Fight Club and RATM, millions of people who think they're hardcore non-conformists and anti-corporatists consider both their favorite film or band, which is super ironic from the outside perspective.

Look, this stuff is very rarely by the musical groups themselves. They have lawyers who take it up themselves to protect the brand purity of their clients. It's kinda their job. Without talking to the musicians directly, you have no way of knowing whether they endorsed this.

I hope once Warpath (?) comes out that someone can do a comparison of this, that, Dusk and Amid Evil. Those 4 titles are what I think of as the "big 4" throwback FPS titles.

I tend to think of six-degrees-of-freedom games separately, like Descent and Forsaken I put them in their own category.
Fair enough, but I tend to lump Descent in with Duke3D, Heretic, Doom, etc because they came out in a lineage.

Is Overload really the best of the descent likes? They all look so similar to me. Some of them doing more unique stuff like NeonXSZ's sandbox world but who knows how well it works out. Etc. And most of them have very positive feedback even. Kind of a hard choice to invest the time in any one of them.

There are probably several more. I wish one of them was more of a joystick than a mouse & keyboard game but nope. They probably support them, sure, but with such instant immediate response they all play better as an FPS rather than a space combat game where you control a vehicle with a set behavior.

Kind of a hard choice
I have the same problem with those 90s style FPS games.
Dusk, Ion Fury, Amid Evil and more. it's really hard to pick something.
Plus those old classics also exist and sometimes even received a face over like Quake 2 or Blood

If you feel like Quake go Dusk, if like Doom/Nukem then Ion Fury, Amid Evil I haven't played yet to say for sure as it didn't appeal to me aesthetically :p

If you haven't played it yet then the old classic Powerslave/Exhumed (console ver., preferably Saturn's) is the best of them all still (until EX happens) :p

In my opinion, Overload is easily the best one of them.
It's a new Descent game, in all but the name, done by the creators of that series. It controls exactly as expected, and it's a lot of fun.

I bought all the games you listed (except NeonXSZ), and none felt "quite right", while Overload feels like the real deal.
The best of those games is, IMO, Sublevel Zero Redux. It tries to do its own thing, and has a decent visual and audio presentation, but I struggled a bit with the slower pace of it.

I'm finally playing through the game (previously, I had only played the original early access demo, when it wasn't even a full episode, despite buying it on the very first day it popped-up on Steam).

I can't believe I didn't play it sooner. This game is awesome!
Really, the levels, the weapons, the soundtrack, this is really great stuff. A lot of games try to "mimic" old-school FPSs, but this one is the real deal.
It's really a lot of fun.

And, the upcoming expansion (coming next year) looks like it will kick things up a notch:
