Awhile ago I was trying to catch some sleep and I just had to check Twitter that one last time before bed and noticed that I was just putting off my sleep because of it and at the same time I was reading about miserable events done by miserable people, that made me decide that it was time to take a proper break from Twitter.

Month later I can say that it was a good decision, tho I miss some of the folks there I don't miss the misery of the world. I understand that there are issues out there that need to be heard but I personally got so numb that even the most prominent issues just made me harrumph. Social media is all well and good if you can still relate to the people and feel connected but after awhile it can numb you and instead of feeling connected you feel more severed from others. It made me think in more extreme terms and ways about people who didn't EXACTLY align with my thoughts and viewpoints.

Social media seems to eventually push people in to separate cells that can't communicate between other cells properly and I think it's one of the reasons things are spiraling out of control.

I'd like to hear if there are more people that start to feel disconnected because they are connected constantly.

It angers you for no good reason also. You see something completely unrelated to you in any way or form put the post is in a negative form so it "oozes" in to you. Enough of that in a row and you just put your mind in to a negative and shitty mindset.

I make it a point to not engage with social media, especially regarding thorny issues. I believe that social media have severely damaged the ability of people to talk with one another because they strongly favor reaction over discussion. Even forums can be problematic because it's hard to convey tone through the written word, never mind in the handful of characters that Twitter provides.

I think social media is a textbook example of a few toxic divas poisoning the well for everyone else by making themselves the representatives of the masses. Passive-aggressive, or straight-aggressive statements, anger and constantly high emotions means that I only ever go there to brows art and specialists, not people.

I'm feeling similar about facebook at least in terms of it becoming more of useless tool than its worth.
It's the only social media I use, and it being an ad platform 1st has become too hard to ignore. My feed is like 75/25 advertising and the only real reason I keep it is a few groups i'm in with friends and messenger. If I could walk away from it, I would, since the only real meaningful value I get from it is the occasional interesting retro pc game listing on the market place and talking to family over video during various pandemic lockdowns. Thankfully after this long on there, even though I dont like the ads, they are at least vaguely tailored to what little I have about me and I don't see a lot of the poison shit that leads to rabbit holes like qanon and such.

If I ever get my ass in gear with gamedev, I may create an account on twitter again, but id keep it at arms length and not really interactive because I don't need more social media in my life.

I dont like social media. I always preferred forums and, well, personal discussion.

I can recommend anyone to cut back on social media usage. I only ever used Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and I dont use the first two anymore (as in: I have my profiles but dont post anything and hardly check my timelines). I use Twitter in a very limited capacity. My timeline is mostly empty, because I unfollowed most people, or muted them (and also a whole slew of words and phrases). In the case of Twitter, I additionally turned off all retweets. But every now and then I browse Twitter for a while, and see all the craziness going on and just shake my head. Its so incredibly unhealthy how focused these people are on the negative and the division between themselves and whatever they perceived as the others.

lashman I hope you manage to cut back on your Twitter usage, and I hope it helps you :)

As a general tip... use Social media in a limited capacity, curate your timelines, dont engage morons (mute them), dont follow accounts whose postings make you angry...and if everything fails, delete the app. I dont have social media apps installed and only use the brower versions. Not sure that would automatically help, but hey, whatever ;)

True. One needs to think about the good things happening in their life thanks to social media. If there is none, and on top of that, if social media bring bad things (e.g. you sleep less, you read/watch toxic content, etc.), then it might be a good thing to get away from them. "Likes" are addictive, so it can be hard to get away, but "likes", "follows", "retweets", etc. bring nothing to the table.

Twitter is good for following artists, that's what I mostly use it for. It's incredibly useful since new art would keep popping up on the timeline, making search engines irrelevant. Also a good tool for references if you follow models.

What I miss is the gaming news in a sort of self-curated form. I now would have to read through the sites almost daily to get my news instead of "pinging" myself with the interesting ones by the headline on a tweet.

Whenever there's the current "big event" stuff going on and people freak out, I wish people would consider whether obsession with news and reacting to it is doing actual harm to their lives and making them miserable. The reaction is worse than the actual event sometimes when you think about which really harms you. So good job on leaving twitter! I'm glad to have never used it.

When it's on personal level just chatting with people about random stuff it's fun and can be entertaining in a proper way but when the whole of it usually is just people wallowing in misery it's just really negative and just simply not good for you. I'm not saying you should insulate yourselves from negativity but when it's the one thing that something gives you then you are in a toxic "relationship"
