Athletic and agile, sneaky and cunning. Driven by the desire to once again hold in his hands what he lost, Gollum is one of the most fascinating characters in the world of The Lord of the Rings™.

He has seen things that others can not imagine, he has survived things that others would not dare mention. Torn by his split personality, he can be vicious and villainous as Gollum, but social and cautious as Sméagol.

While being vital to the story by J.R.R. Tolkien, many parts of Gollum’s quest have not been told in detail yet. In The Lord of the Rings™: Gollum™ you get to experience this story. From his time as a slave below the Dark Tower to his stay with the Elves of Mirkwood.

Use stealth, agility and cunning to survive and overcome what lies ahead. Climb, leap and grapple your way past dangers or into advantageous spots.

While Gollum might not be a fighter, it is not unlike him to assassinate a careless enemy when the chance presents itself – or dispose of them in more creative and villainous ways.

The decisions you make and the way you play have a direct influence on Gollum’s personality: Always struggling between the two sides embodied by Gollum and Sméagol, it is up to you to decide whether the darker side of Gollum takes over or if there is a spark of reason left in what once was Sméagol. One mind, two egos - you decide!

My precious!

German video game developer Daedalic Entertainment unveiled its upcoming title, Lord of the Rings: Gollum, on Monday. The action adventure game will follow the years of the popular J.R.R. Tolkien character after he acquired the One Ring but before the events of The Lord of the Rings novels and films.

"You already have that big conflict in the character, two voices talking to you continuously, which means there is a good reason there are decisions to make in the game: the Smeagol decisions or the Gollum decision," Carsten Fichtelmann, CEO and co-founder of Daedalic Entertainment, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

"We have the story that we all know from the book, but everything that happens to him before he appears in the book are the main things we will see in our game," Fichtelmann says. "We will tell the story before he first appears in the books."

Daedalic partnered with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish the new game, which is slated for release in 2021 on PC and "all relevant console platforms at that time."

Gollum is the first title being developed in the new partnership between Daedalic and Middle-earth, but plans for further games in the future are in the works.

“Our goal was to present a storytelling experience. About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing Lord of the Rings,” Fichtelmann says of the formation of the partnership. "After some negotiations, it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years."

Fichtelmann says Daedalic's goal with its Lord of the Rings projects is not to go "too deep into the uncanny valley" by making hyper-realistic games. "When it comes to shapes, colors, we definitely try to produce something that is a statement," he says.

The 2021 release date for Gollum coincides with Amazon's planned premiere date for its $1 billion Lord of the Rings television series that is currently in production.

Weird that its an action game from Daedelic. I'd expect an adventure or something. I wonder if we'll see him before he got corrupt so that he's a handsome cool action hero Smeagol before turning into Gollum? But playing as actual Gollum could be cool, then again I wonder what kind of adventures he could go on in such a state and who wanna interact with him, lol. Edit: going by the available canon that I just looked up it seems Smeagol really didn't do shit other than murder his hobbit cousin for the ring and then go live exiled in his cave. I guess they'll make stuff up because that wouldn't be much of a journey, lol.

Lol. Yeah I was just reading up on Sméagol and that's basically all he's known to have done. Wtf are they going to do with this game xD

It would be different if we had no accounts of his earlier life so they could make him a Bilbo type hobbit or something but his own story starts with murder!

I like Daedalic's output, so I'm very curious to hear more about the game.

I'm one of the few that believes that Daedalic's adventure output at least matches the efforts made by LucasArts and Sierra in the late 80s/mid 90s period. They are experts in building bleak worlds as those seen in games like The Dark Eye saga, Deponia and Edna & Harvey, which more than fits the kind of game they could make with Gollum.

Of all the things that could be done with LOTR/Middle Earth in video games, they choose to focus on Gollum......

It could be interesting.
I read a mini-interview somewhere with the developers, and it seems they are planning more games, I believe 3 or so.
And, their idea is that, instead of adapting books, they will be making games based on certain characters in the "universe".

So, the next game will not follow Gollum, but instead follow another character.

A little jarring that he looks so different from the movie version (like a skull with eyes here), but I'm curious about how good this could be.

“The game mixes stealth with vertical climbing parkour,” lead designer Martin Wilkes told IGN. “If you want a reference you might think of it as similar to Prince of Persia. It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies. However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum’s strengths lie in cunning not combat.”

While Gollum will not use weapons, he will be able to distact enemies with throwable items, as well as profit from the abilities of “special allies” and can use the environment to his advantage, according to lead narrative designer Tilman Schanen. Those “special allies” are familiar characters that “for the most part” will play smaller roles in the story, “but in some cases very significant.”

As for decision making, players will have to choose from responses proposed by his Smeagol personality and Gollum personality. According to Schanen, the decisions you make affect how the game feels, and the “dominant” persona can influence “animations, soundscapes, certain gameplay situations, and in-game dialogue.”

Harald Riegler, Producer at Daedalic Entertainment, provides more details about The Lord of the Rings™: Gollum™. In this action-adventure game combining stealth and parkour, you play as one of the most complicated and iconic characters created by J.R.R Tolkien. Tormented and constantly switching between two personalities, Gollum is a different type of ""hero"" and the central character in this story that takes him from Mordor to the depths of Moria.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be available in Fall 2022 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
