Edit: Sorry I'm not on the metacouncil instance, I already have an account on art. Does anyone know if it's worth making a meta council mastodon account and then redirecting it to my main account? Or does just having some people from here follow me mean that I'lll show up in people's timelines? I don't fully understand how local timeline works yet, despite having been on the service for a while.

well, there is a custom CSS field, but there's only so much you can do with CSS, so - not really

I think there are huge differences between forums like this and social media.
It's very disappointing to see the hype around Hive on the other forum.
I feel like the decentralized internet is important to fight for in the wake of this Twitter fiasco. How someone wants to put all their faith in another private social media company is beyond me.

Never even heard of Hive until just now, so it must not be that important. 
It doesn't even have a web version I understand? Like you can only use it via an app? Worse, it puts us back into Myspace time where peoples profiles blare music at you?
Still not ready for Mastodon myself, but happy to see it's growing feature set.
Hive not having a webversion immediately rules it out for me.
I use twitter like 60-80% of the time on my second screen, usually browsing while watching a youtube video, playing turn based games etc.

Don't see it happening tbh, unless Twitter just stops working. The drama side of things is almost entirely contained within the anglosphere and it's immediate neighbors.
But yeah, I'd follow the artists too.

especially with SO FUCKING MANY red flags around that whole thing, but people just refuse to even do the absolute minimum of research
When it comes to alternatives to twitter, the casual user only wants something that is simple and intuitive to use. mastodon has a barrier of entry for the casual users, the list of servers the moment an user clicks to create an account.
Maybe mastodon would really take off as the replacement for twitter more easily if it had a main general purpose server that is selected by default, but that would go against its decentralized purpose, I guess.
I think this is why people are jumping at the app that feels like the closest to twitter at the moment, hive, despite it really needing alot of work to be a viable alternative to twitter.
Personally I'm taking the wait and see approach. I'm not registering to mastodon, hive, or any other alternative yet, I'm waiting to see what video game publishers/devs and especially what vtubers and japanese users will do.
I'm just hoping JP users don't end up moving to a JP only platform if/when twitter dies, it would be a huge bummer to lose this "crossroad" between JP and western users.

Yeah this is a problem I see, there's barely any non english speakers on Mastodon, I've seen mostly users from Taiwan who are either good with tech and also know a bit of english.
Well with Hive imploding I hope the folks there do a double take, they should know better.

Yeah, they're shutting it down for a few days to fix reported vulnerabilities. Creator also knowingly left the servers up for 72hours and only shut them down when this was publicized.
