Honestly, I've used matrix in a professional capacity for about a year now and it's actually very good as far as these things go.
The only other alternative I've tried (that is an actual alternative, i.e. you can self-host it) is Rocket Chat, and it's way worse on pretty much every level.
I'm currently eyeballing Stoat, but I'm waiting to see where the winds blow before making any jumps to other platforms

I bought Relooted and Princess Farmer today. I'm holding off on Mewgenics since it's turn based. I'll be getting Rogue Point and Killer Inn on Thursday.

Steam Chat could absolutely replace Discord if folks actually wanted it. It is crazy how Discord-like it has quietly become over the years. It just needs a few tweaks and it would cover the majority of what folks use Discord for.
That said, I never see it happening as I think Steam missed the window.
And if it somehow did happen, Valve would be pressured to follow suit like Discord at some point sooner rather than later.

Valve does not want Steam to be known as a groomer platform and have even more regulator eyes on it. They'll be perfectly happy with Steam's barebones chat features.
With the weekend over, Nioh 3 confirms its place at the top of Koei's CCU ranks. Once again, this confirms day 1 releases always help on Steam, and also proves Koei is succesfully growing an audience there
After two years of creating characters in Diablo 4, getting distracted by real world stuff, and then restarting with new characters to refresh my memory of the story, I finally beat the main campaign and working through the first expansion. I should be done with the expansion story before the next season and expansion launches. It's really fun and the world is big.

Talking about alternatives to discord seems somewhat pointless to me because the scale has been tipped. It's not a matter of preference for discord, it's that we reached the tipping point where enough territories are legislating it now. Whatever comes next will be subject to the same laws. The whole internet will soon enough, wheresoever people will gather and checked against whatever your local government deems mature/adult. And some governments will no doubt also wield it against whatever they deem """"problematic."""
