Hidden in Plain Sight

Hidden in Plain Sight is a set of local multiplayer (2-4 players) game modes that share a common theme: trying to accomplish goals without drawing attention to yourself. In each game mode, players control characters in a sea of identical NPCs. Players are given a task, but also the means to eliminate each other from the game. The goal is to blend in with the NPCs, accomplish the task at hand, and take out other players before they get you. One of the simplest game modes is called "Death Race." Players and NPCs are racing to be the first to cross a finish line. Each player has a gun with one bullet, and can eliminate one person from the race. Do you sprint ahead, calling attention to yourself but maximizing you chances of winning? Or do you hang back with the pack? Other game modes create similar tension by putting players in a conflicted position of wanting to accomplish a goal, but risking elimination by doing so. Rounds are quick and lively, and always end in laughter and friendly shouting. So grab your controllers and friends and give it a shot!

More details here:

It's a 20 - 25 pct uplift between the regular 5800 vs 5800X3D at 1080P. I think scalpers are going to be the biggest issue.
Unless the TDP/cooling is much better on the x3d compared to the 5800x (which I have), I don' think the extra cache is worth it for me. For her... maybe, but a new gpu is my priority on her machine. If it's like 250CAD, maybe I'll think about it.

Anyone play Diablo 4 on Linux? It’s keeps freezing for me like every 15 minutes. It’s like the graphics driver crashes. I keep trying different versions of proton but nothing works.
Blizzard has historically had some pretty messed up DRM on their games, I wonder if this does also. But the steam versions don't call out anything other than a Battle.net account. But I would think more people would be talking about that, and I don't see it.

If it reigns in their shitty business practices, I'm all for it. Yeah the client and its feature set are second to none, but Valve does a lot of other shitty things from a bsuiness/consumer perspective, and the price parity is definitely one of them and should absolutely be removed/stopped.

I'm not exactly sure what the parity clause entails, but I always thought it was because Steam gives developers free keys so they can sell them wherever they want.

I think that’s pretty generous of Valve. Obviously, it helped Steam grow, but they keep doing it even though they don’t need it anymore.

Now, if I give you keys to sell, and then I’m going to cover the infrastructure costs involved, the least I’m going to expect is that you don’t sell them much cheaper than what you sell the game for on my platform.

I understand that this would apply only to sales of Steam keys; otherwise, I do see it as unfair.

Does this price parity even exist? I buy cheaper games from keystores all the time.

Gabe denied it during his deposition, but there are several documents that suggests Valve engages in it to some degree.

Also there might be some confusion between content parity (which Valve enforces) and price parity (which Valve denies). At the same time there are instances where Valve suggests price parity so it is muddy.

Does this price parity even exist? I buy cheaper games from keystores all the time.
Key stores are still selling a Steam key that activates on Steam in the end, which is what people seem to not understand.. This issue would be for versions of the game that don't activate on Steam when bought elsewhere: Gog, epic, EA, Ubisoft, a dev's own webpage. And I'll stop you right there, yes there are people who do shop outside of Steam or don't want to use Steam..

It's one thing to have to play by Steam's rules for it's store, it's another if one of their policies reach outside of its store - eg price parity or no steam for you. It's why you rarely see games on sale on other stores if they arent on sale for the same price or less on Steam at the same time.

edit: at least as I understand it, this is how the policy works. But since there isn't much to go on outside of the lawsuit, it's hard to really dig down.
Also, it's hardly the only shitty business practice - it;s just the one from that lawsuit specifically- gambling/loot boxes, the laissez-faire take on moderation (aka the nazi problem), pricing practices, are all things Valve should be taken to task for.

You understand it incorrectly. This policy applies only to Steam keys, has never been enforced and is only really a guideline (almost a request) in the Steam dev docs.

If a company like Ubi says they actually wanted to sell Assassin's Creed on their Ubi store for $50 but Valve forced them to sell it for $70 because that's the price Ubi themselves set on Steam, and someone believes them, then get me in touch with them because I have long, barely used bridge to the moon to sell them.

That said, this particular bit of text in their documentation has been used as a legal attack vector against them several times so it's probably time for the Valve Corporaton to start acting like a corporation. No more Steam keys, period. If you want to buy the game on Steam then you pay the price the developer wants on Steam. Yeah, it'll kill GMG and Humble and a bunch of other businesses but everyone is used to how corporations work and would love it if Valve did so as well. And yes, it would also be the end of consumer friendly price competition but I'm sure everyone who hates antitrust practices will be thrilled by this move.

EDIT - this was more acerbic than it needed to be. I'm sorry. I read a post on the other site that just made me shake my head a little too hard and then replied here. This was the one;

What? Ofc there is harm on the consumer side. Consumers are funding a fleet of yachts for a billionaire via high revenue tax which pushes prices higher than they could be.

The fucking yachts again.

I stand corrected. Though clearly there are documents (emails) showing that it's applied unevenly. Mostly I just don't like people giving Valve, or any billion dollar company, a pass for shitty practices.

Yes, there are only "nuke keys from orbit" or" keep doing what theyre doing." There can't be any other way to deal with it. That's a logical fallacy and not a particularly good faith argument against things, c'mon now..

Bloomberg brings this up in their article. The PCGamer article or at least that uh.. post (does bluesky have a 'tweet' equivalent term?) frames it as some revelation, but the actual article is just regurgitating old information with nothing new added?
pretty much, from what i can tell

Oi! Have ye got a loicense to chat in that game?
Starmer going all in on 'won't you you think of the children' as a party pillar instead of addressing the underlying causes, eh?. Fucking hell. This is right up there with OS's requiring age verification and their porn age-gate.

The unofficial term I've heard is "skeet", yeah I think you can just call it a tweet or post lol. Not exactly great with that naming

Age verification is a tricky subject. No government wants to run it themselves because it's a massive data leak waiting to happen, so they're letting the private sector run it and laundering their responsibility.

I'd have less issue if the state found a way to make it private. I don't want some freaky Palantir shit scooping up my data.

It's also alleviates corps having to do the work themselves (eg Facebook), instead giving them and others a giant new pool of data to harvest and sell. All because they can set up 'nonprofits' to lobby for them
Let alone your point of it leaking and all the issues with that.

mastodon's "toot" is much better

:steam_pigblanket:
Much better by far.
