Would starting out with Arch be way too begging for pain? No idea why I thought I wanted that, but seems like the most cutting edge, meaning probably has a way to do most in terms of hardware, I have a few Elgato stuff that I really want to be able to work on linux but saw that they dont have native drivers.

Arch is going to be the most cutting-edge, that's part of its design philosophy. It goes with a rolling release model, where all the individual components that make up the OS get upgraded whenever they have updates put out, whereas distros like Ubuntu or Fedora treat the OS as one big lump that all get updated together on a schedule, akin to Windows. Using Arch is generally a good idea if you want to play games on Linux, since gaming is very much cutting-edge and moving very rapidly.

Plenty of things don't have official drivers, but may have community solutions. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "Elgato stuff", but there's tools to set up Stream Decks.

If you wanna try it, I would personally recommend CachyOS. It's basically just Arch, pre-set up out of the box with some optimization tweaks. If you really don't want to deal with tweaking stuff, I've heard Nobara is good. Whatever you pick, there's no harm in dual-booting to try things out, hopping between distros until you find one you vibe with.

You could try a rolling release of a more stable base like Debian, so you could get faster updates and some edge.

I would not recommend Arch Linux for beginners, no.
But there are Arch-based alternatives that are beginner-friendly suitable, like Manjaro (which I use for years now).

Installing Arch itself has become easier with a guided installer, but its still more complicated than other distros. If you're running pure Arch, you'll be using the command line a bit more than you might want to ;)

I'm also not sure what you mean with Elgato stuff; but it is always a good idea to check if your hardware is compatible with Linux. Mind you that drivers are generally part of the kernel itself, so distros that use the latest kernels will have the latest drivers, as well.

Lastly, you have a Steam Deck, which has Arch under the SteamOS-hood, so you can always tinker with that a bit :)

EA has cancelled its AAA Black Panther game and shut down the developer, Cliffhanger Games. Cliffhanger was founded by ex-Monolith staff, so this compounds WB shutting down Monolith and cancelling their Wonder Woman game a few months back.

Disappointing reviews for Nightreign. Only a 78 on metacritic.

Looks like the solo mode is an afterthought. The game gets repetitive too.

FromSoft and Miyazaki aren't about this multiplayer life. They really should stick to making singleplayer focused games.

I get they are probably burned out by doing the same shit over and over again for more than a decade. But chasing some Battle Royale co-op or Extraction trends isn't the answer to burnout.

There are plenty of ways to innovate the genre without having to dive into a different directions like this.

They can push to make first person Souls games. Do some party rpg Souls like with different camera perspectives like VR etc. There are many interesting directions to pursue that includes both art style and combat innovation.

I'm expecting Duskbloods to be the same as Nightreign. They should really consider delaying that game and adding a nice solo story campaign to flesh out that world.

I'm wondering if given the last report from capcom about pc gaming being the majority now if there's a chance in the future to see a port of MH Generations Ultimate...

Skimming through the reviews of Nightreign, it seems the core problem of the game is the Roguelite/like aspect, it seems From really does not know how the genre should work.
This could be patched, the rest is preferences and the base is solid.

It also seems the randomizer is wildly inconsistent.

I hope the game gets free updates but the wording of From is worring.

and finally I bet the psychos would enjoy "the most difficult souls game on solo mode" good for them.

I was expecting more from Nightreign too. like mid 80s fare. And I had the great idea of preordering before reviews. I still think I want to check it out, it's a From Souls game.

Scurge: Hive? Huh. I emulated the GBA version a billion years ago a bit, Remember liking it well enough.
Looks like this too is just emulation which is a shame, and they don't even say which version as far as I can see. Probably GBA, no need to think about the dual screen aspect of the DS version.

Neither DQ Heroes games not having had a sale in 3 years or whatever is very weird.
KT have actually been getting much better with sales, like Atelier games have actually been on sale, and getting progressively deeper sales too. And they seem to discount everything.
And the same seems to be also true for most Square Enix stuff at a quick glance, so perhaps it's something specific about these DQ Heroes games that is the issue.
If psprices.com site is correct those two DQ Heroes games haven't gone on sale in a long time on PSN either.

But what could it be that it wouldn't also affect other DQ games? Like are there any other potential rights holder shenanigans that would play a part here but not in other DQ games? Maybe someone at SE made a badly worded contract with some random voice over artist and they are blocking it for some reason, or something equally stupid as that.

Here's a weird thing I noticed, the last time steamdb has marked them being on sale started on sep 29, 2021. that cunt Sugiyama died on sep 30, 2021. Coincidence?!?!?! Definitely yes because that sale also included other DQ games that have continued to be discounted after it as well. But hey, bizarre right.

It's just classic SE. I'm pretty they literally forget some of their games are on PC.
I feel like this is the most plausible explanation, yeah. Like, it fell through the cracks somehow and no one is currently responsible for programming its discounts lmao. I mean, even if they gave up on it selling any more copies, putting it on sale couldn't possibly hurt now could it?

I can't put into words how excited I am for the Windows-less era of PC gaming.

It's honestly already here.

One of my friends has been dealing with Windows & Nvidia issues for months now. He just upgraded to a RTX 5090, and hoped they'd go away. They did not. Intermittent black screens. Desktop flickering. Crashes. The straw that finally broke the years of Ads, AI nonsense, constantly pestering you to use their subscription services, an inconsistent interface that requires you to dig through pages of settings to find the old control panel page that lets you do what you want, etc.

He asked me to show him the ways of Linux. I helped him get setup with CachyOS & KDE, various games, apps, and hardware support he required, and he's been loving it. No more black screens, flickering, or crashes. Everything he's tried thus far has worked. And he finds KDE Plasma much more responsive & functional.

The initial viability setup included:

  • Using his RTX 5090 on a 4K 240Hz display with VRR & HDR and a second 1440p display.
  • FFXIVLauncher with all of his Dalamud mods & configs.
  • Using two mice. General Logitech mouse with a Corsair MMO mouse.
  • Keyboard configuration support (VIA).
  • Discord, Firefox, and other essentials.
  • Zenless Zone Zero
  • Helldivers 2 (Apparently it actually closes on Linux — wow!)
  • Marvel Rivals
  • L4D2
  • DOOM: The Dark Ages

* HDR isn't as seamless as it could be just yet, but it's quickly approaching that. It's still worth checking out ProtonDB for the ocassional needed launch parameter or Proton version.

I helped with a few things, but for someone who has no prior Linux experience, it has been pretty seamless. It's great to see where Linux is now.

I have created a thread to for the streams that will happen in the next days:

This thread should have info on most game streams that will happen during the "Summer Game Fest" time frame.
A chat is attached to the thread.

Today there is stream called "Thinky Direct" happening.

Saw a listing on facebook marketplace for a Meta Quest 3 that was really cheap, it was $250 (they sell it for over $550 here) and this thing is brand new I'm sure, they just opened it to check it works and sold it to a pawn shop. I wonder how the heck they got it and decided to pawn it right away. Did they steal it or some shit?
I'm already broke from buying a PC but I couldn't pass it up so I also got the headset.

And I probably won't use it for some time because of Nightreign.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is out along with a demo. It's a GBA-influenced Yoyovania by the Dodgeball Academia devs. People are saying it's got a lot of content.

I bought it and I was surprised by how good it is, like I was expecting just a metroidvania with the yoyo as a gimmick but the game is solid, it controls well and the music is goes hard.

Got my hands on Scar-Lead Salvation.

The PC version needs some work, let's just say.

Nice that it's a simultaneous worldwide release. Not so nice that it's seemingly one of the few games that IdeaFactory put advertising budget into at the expense of portions of the game needing WAY more polish.

First impressions of my own is that the movement is okay setting aside the dodging being set to CTRL rather than something like C. As for the aiming, bullet magnetism is always on, and the mouse sensitivity is tied to framerate (yes, even with the game using FixedUpdate for camera updates). Pair that with the FixedUpdate problem (still 50Hz), and it doesn't feel good to aim. There's no separate sensitivity slider for ADS mode.

I guess PlayStation button prompts are there, that's about the most positive thing I can say about the PC port at the moment.

There's quite a few problems with the PC port:

  • No graphics options at all, outside of resolution and that's even limited to 1920x1080.
  • The FixedUpdate problem, and mouse sensitivity being tied to the framerate.
  • Weapons are switched between by pressing the Y key rather than the scroll wheel.
  • No ultrawide support, this can be worked around by pressing Alt+Enter, but the game has zoomed in UI (Thanks to CanvasScaler antics and the developers manually setting the camera to Vert- gatefit mode for some reason).
  • 8x MSAA is always on, and it doesn't really improve image quality by that much. Why they don't offer TAA options when the engine version they're using supports it is beyond me.
  • Really nasty looking screen space reflections.
  • Instead of costing $50 (or $60 with the deluxe edition content) like their other games, this one is $60 with a $80 deluxe edition that you cannot buy the deluxe content separately for.

According to a friend who is hopelessly addicted to COD, the timing window for the dodges are way too fair, resulting in the game feeling incredibly easy as a result. They told me the game bored them. I'm not far long enough to form my own opinion. I can say thoiugh, the parrying system basically just clears bullets rather than knocking them back at enemies (like in Ultrakill) so it's existence is essentially pointless when you can just dash through them easily.

I'd wait for a sale and for the developers to patch the game. There's no reason these issues should exist for a $60-80 game. Go and buy Stellar Blade or something instead, despite Shift Up's recent issues with Nikke (and treating non-China players like second class citizens), at least their games don't reek of modern post-2020 Japanese game slop and (seemingly) has a decent PC port to boot.

I'll probably give my thoughts on Death end re;Quest Code Z when that officially releases on Steam. I probably am not going to beta testing another IF port again. I'm tired.

Close to the end of Clair Obscure where finally some story happens and I gotta get real

This is the most boringly self-indulgent, trite, platitudinous story I've ever witnessed in videogames.

It makes The Last of us 2 and David Cage look good

Super enjoyed the Pipistrello demo, might actually cave into buying it today, GMG has a good deal on it.

haven't used that pic in 15 years.

sorry console peasants

Unfortunately, due to technical constraints, this isn’t currently possible — it’s simply much easier to release a demo on PC.

Two things held me back from CO.

1. Visually it looks soooo busy. I respect the surreal art direction, but hyper-realism (technically) in the medium can be too much for my tired old eyes sometimes. Felt the same way about Sony's Horizon games.

2. The narrow timing windows for parries, etc. in combat are a complete non-starter for me. Some have said it's not that bad but I'd prefer to hear their opinion when they're a few years shy of 60 like me. #teamaccessability

Looks pretty dope otherwise.
