OK so I've got a '2018 in retrospective thread' that'll be going up soon.
I'm really posting it on here first primary as a 'beta test', because I am certain there are a few games between January and October that I forgot to mention for whatever reason. The updated list will go up on the other forum before the Winter Seal.

two interesting new releases ... Archeology Sim and first persion rogulike dungeon
Secrets of the Past: Dion is a casual simulation game that follows the journey of an archaeological artifact, from its discovery to its museum exhibition. It is a first point of contact with the work of archaeologists and possibly a next generation museum app.

You run the excavation of the ancient Villa of Dionysus, unearth its thousands of years old treasures, join together artifact fragments and host your very own exhibition. In the process, you inspect up close and interactively the 3D models of the real artifacts found in the ancient site and you learn about the glorious millennium of ancient Dion, the City of Zeus, situated at the foothills of Mount Olympus.

Gear up for the challenges of managing an archaeological excavation project!

FEATURES
  • A unique grid excavation mechanic – reveal instead of build.
  • A mix of exploration, worker placement and puzzle.
  • Unlimited replayability using the random artifact locations mode.
  • A portrayal of archaeology with a learning effect created to inspire young and old.
  • A faithful reproduction of the architectural remains of the luxurious ancient Villa of Dionysus.
  • The ancient artifacts discovered in the game are 3D models of the real artifacts exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Dion.
  • The music is an original composition based on the ancient Greek harp song of Seikilos.
  • Multilingual: English and Greek
REFERENCES
The stories and artifact descriptions in the game are based on the following publications:
  • PANDERMALIS, D. (ed) (2000), “Discovering Dion”, Adam Editions (Athens)
  • PANDERMALIS, D. (ed) (2016), “Gods and Mortals at Olympus: Ancient Dion, City of Zeus”, Onassis Foundation USA (New York)
NOTE ABOUT THE MOBILE VERSION
A free prototype version of this game was published for mobile platforms in 2016. That version was commissioned by the Onassis Foundation USA in conjunction with the 2016 exhibition Gods and Mortals at Olympus: Ancient Dion, City of Zeus. The exhibition brought a selection from the thousands of artifacts that attest to the vibrant daily, cultural and religious life in ancient Dion for the first time to the USA. The mobile game aimed to attract New York youth and introduce them to the world of ancient history and archaeological excavation. The more challenging, more replayable and visually enhanced multilingual PC version of this game is now available on Steam.

PC Gaming OT is a fine thread title. There's no point in making new threads each month anyways since we barely reach page 100 per month for one thing.

Follow my curator for more great puzzle game recommendations!

What presents as a simple Sudoku clone at first, Puzlogic is actually an ingenious mixture of the aforementioned Sudoku, Kakuro and even the mathematical formulae featuring in games such as Hexologic. Don’t go into this game thinking you’ll be done in an hour!

I believe the first 32 levels were released while the game was in early access to garner feedback. These levels are pretty straightforward starting out with basic Sudoku style levels, no number can be repeated in any horizontal or vertical line. Kakuro elements are then introduced, you are given the sum of various lines as well. Then you get a second coloured number tile and more summations and the fun really begins. The second half of the game is where it really shines with the Kakuro elements added to with dotted lines around areas that also need to add up and even sections where the tiles need to add up equally. Some of these later puzzles can take quite a while.

The game board is represented with a nice randomly rotating pastel background with occasional effects such as light rain along with pleasing ambient music. Completing a puzzle is as simple as dragging and dropping a tile to an open square on the board. There is also a notation system that allows you to mark possible values for each square, though you can only do four at a time, sometimes more were needed. Though that usually meant I’d started the puzzle at the wrong or maybe a harder place and had too many options. There is also a help/hint system that flashes red when you make a mistake and checks off the summations when you are correct. This help system can be turned off in the options menu and the game rewards you a star for completing a level without it. You also get a star for completing a level without any mistakes.

Now, the English translation could use a little work. Some the explanations for new mechanics weren’t as clear as they could be and to be fair that’s only a very minor complaint. It was also a little unclear how the level progression system worked. Is it related to the number of stars or just how many puzzles you have finished with or without stars. I’d also love to see some sort of Steam Workshop integration for other players to add their own puzzles.

Few things match the relief of dropping that last tile into the last box on one of the later puzzles and it is right the first time! Puzlogic is a fantastic, complex and thoroughly rewarding mathematical logic game and is a steal at the price.

Thanks to the dev for providing a code for review!

No december thread? :D

Also how about just "PC Gaming OT" as a thread name? Saw the PC Gaming retrospect thread and thought the name looks nice.
i thought people liked the "steam" thread concept ...

PC Gaming OT is a fine thread title. There's no point in making new threads each month anyways since we barely reach page 100 per month for one thing.
but the recommendations? i don't think a thread has to have 100 pages per month to "qualify" for a monthly thread .... it's just a nice way to separate each month's recommendations and talk

Keep it Steam. It's a tradition :p Steam thread was always kind of in name only and we talked about everything, we sometimes talk about games on other platforms, I personally don't align myself with a certain hardware platform so I'm always more comfortable with being in Steam thread instead of "PC thread".
