I'm stupid for missing Magic Carpet, that one was so obvious! Also kicking myself over the fifth "Angel" in n*17, I had a hunch about it but I ran out of time and patience to investigate. No big regrets otherwise, I would say 18 points is a decent score for having played exactly zero of the games that were on the quiz. :p

Thank you as usual and looking forward to the next one.

Couldn't get #15, even after figuring out the theme for it I just had no idea what I was even looking at. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

It was pretty interesting quiz overall because of how it's possible to approach it from couple of different angles. Like, I initially didn't recognize Magic Carpet or Curiosity but after I noticed the then potential Molyneux connection, it narrowed the pool of games a lot and confirmed the theme as soon as I found the the two missing games.

My only miss was the half point for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe being wrong. I don't play the games to really be able to visually tell them apart and honestly I already purged the dumb RC car game from my head.

The funny thing for me was I figured out themes quite quickly overall but even with them I was shuffling games around trying to figure out how things fit. Like Angel from Wing Commander was nothing to me. I got to the point knowing she had to be Angel by process of elimination but then kept searching Angel + Point and Click Adventure on Google. I spent a good thirty minutes looking through point and click adventure games and other similar searches.

Curiosity I looked up really early but all the screens were zoomed out and didn't look like what was shown. I eventually went back and searched for the power ups for the game since I remembered it had some and was able to see matches.

Magic Carpet was another funny one for me since I didn't have that settled as a Molyneux game and I wanted to find a 2D game but kept getting Magic Carpet screenshots in the results so I was trying to remove them from my search. I spent a good 10 minutes looking at other stuff and being annoyed that Magic Carpet kept coming up and then I finally noticed the UI elements and got so mad.

This was a really good challenge and due to the themes it made me want to spend more than my usual time to try to get everything. I hope this type of quiz returns next year.

December Quiz - King of the World

Are you the mayor of your town? The chieftain of your tribe? The president of your country, or even the emperor of your galactic realm?! This time we look at the bigger picture - games where you control leaders and decision makers that steer entire countries as well as armies and civilians alike.
This can mean political and armed conflict or peaceful building strategy. Sometimes it's all about the survival of your people in a harsh environment, or about political intrigue for more power.

Do you like to be king of the world? Then take a look at this quiz and show us what you know. :)

Deadline is Thursday the 31st December, participate via December Quiz - King of the World

Here is the last quiz of the year, enjoy!

Tough one for sure. But I'm able to recognise at some of these at first glance. 10's the easiest for me since I played the crap out of that game back when it released.

[UWSL]Actually, it wasn't too bad. I guess being a huge fan of [/UWSL][UWSL]genre redacted [/UWSL][UWSL]games in general help. :p And, as always, last row is the hardest. :sweaty-blob:[/UWSL]

[UWSL]Also Mr_Horizon , is 20 actually a game? I know what it is, but not sure if it's from a specific game that was made using it.[/UWSL]

As someone who typically does rather well I agree the difficulty is quite high. At a glance, I think I know six? And there's another five I feel confident I could confirm the game with some Googling. But at least half I really don't have a strong thought on and would just start sifting through stuff online. I don't have high hopes for me just yet but maybe the hints will be enough to get me over my usual goal of around 20 correct.

At first glance, I have one title, two or three (probable) series, and… not much else. Maybe the clues later in the month will make things simpler, but I don't know if I can even aim for a half score on this one. Tough challenge for sure!

I am not at all versed in political games and there appears to be a number of these.

December Quiz - Clues #1

The first 16 wannabe rulers have already arrived (none from here), but no one is near a full score - so it's a perfect opportunity to join in and score some points before Christmas takes over. ;)

Here are the first clues:

1) Picture 1 shows the SNES version of the most famous city building sim game.
2) With Title 3 we have an RTS game that was released even before Dune 2.
3) Game 6 is part of a long series of british strategy games - the visible installment is one of few without a historical background.
4) Number 5 and 16 are probably the most famous series of computer games from Germany.

Deadline is Thursday the 31st December, participate via December Quiz - King of the World

Here is the quiz again: link

December Quiz - Clues #2

For real, just seven days and it's Christmas? Well, be quick and join the quiz before that! So far there's 35 people in the game, and I hope you'll be among them soon. :)

Here is the 2nd set of clues:

1) In game #9 you only fight with nuclear bombs.
2) The 11, 13 and 15 are the only titles of this round that are set in space.
3) Number 20 is a real dinosaur - its first version is from the 1960s.
4) With Title 10 we see an entry of a RTS trilogy for Windows PCs.

Deadline is Thursday the 31st of December, participate via December Quiz - King of the World

Here is the quiz again, good luck!

Looks like I was way off with number 20 (just the game, not the platform), but I've got it now thanks to the hint.

Still stuck at 15 and 21. :suicide-blob:

Edit: Just cracked 15. Only one left!

December Quiz - MERRY CHRISTMAS

Happy holidays to all of you! Are there any presents?? Well of course, here are the final clues. :p

So far there's 48 people in this round, and two of them from this community.

Here we go:

1) Game #15 has a really long name - 18 characters!
2) Number 6 is not Heroes of Might and Magic.
3) Title 8 has nothing to do with Age of Empires.
4) The #19 was never released on consoles.

Deadline is Thursday the 31st of December, participate via December Quiz - King of the World

Here's the quiz for one last time!

I completely forgot to submit answers but I would have done pretty poorly. I likely wouldn't have spent the time to research many of them since I'm not overly familiar with these games and wouldn't have a lot to start from so it'd be a lot of random generic Googling. This was some good variety and I really like seeing the answers with how many (seemingly) oddball choices there were, though. Kind of surprised Metal Wolf Chaos XD was the last shot as I knew that one immediately upon seeing it and often I assume the last spot will be some super tough, random homebrew thing.

HIGH SCORE 2020

The first year of the new decade is over, and I'd like to announce some overall winners (and winning forums) from all the contestants and points of 2020. The german language forums already got their high scores last week, so now it's about time for the english communities.

As this quiz is a competition among several online forums (23 in total!), I'd like to explain how you score points for your forum.

SCORE HIGH
If you make it to the top 10 in any of the quizzes, you gather between one and five points for your forum.

ENDURANCE
Frequent participation also gets you (between one and four) points for your forum, that's how you can contribute even without lots of nerd knowledge. :)

Details on points.

A round of applause, 12th place for the MetaCouncil!
Unfortunately that means quite a drop from your 5th place in 2019. Well, I hope you will regain it all in the coming months. :)

There were five new forums last year: the Canard PC, Gamers Global, last game standing, Shock² and the Spazio PC. Welcome! :) There was also the "Gaming Village", but that's the (already participating) exiled community of the shut down website "Gaming Universe". The "Dialogoption" Community has been switched off for months, just as a zombie does it still participate in the ranking. The "Gamepro" Forum has been shut down as well, survivors have split between a Discord Channel and the sister community "Gamestar".

February Quiz - Clues #1

Ready, Aim, Fire - you know the drill, this months "big gun" theme just takes it up a few notches. Twentyfive people are already in on this challenge, even though the difficulty is quite painful once again (oops?). Anyway, here is the first set of clues! Maybe you'll recognise some more titles now. :)

Clues #1:

1) The games 2, 13, 18 and 20 are famous J-RPGs.
2) Number 5 and 21 are installments of well known realtime strategy series.
3) With the titles 4, 7, 14 and 16 we can see first person shooters.
4) And game 9 is a western RPG highly praised for its grown up storytelling.

Deadline is Sunday the 28th of February, please participate via Video Game Quiz - February - Big Guns

Here is the quiz again, good luck!

Awesome, thank you. Figured out what number 18 is now. The only one that I'm still stuck at is 24. I'll wait for the next batch of hints.

February Quiz - Clues #2

We are getting closer to the end of the month... just one week left to recognize every single one of these big guns! It's a tough round alright, so how are you all getting on? :) So far there's 37 people playing, and one from this forum.

Here is the probably last set of hints:

1) Number 12 is originally an arcade game, but was also released on Dreamcast and Switch.
2) The planet in the background of #4 is Mars.
3) The screenshots 7 and 10 come from the Nintendo 64.
4) Title #5 was released in three parts.

Deadline is Sunday the 28th of February, please participate via Video Game Quiz - February - Big Guns

Here is the quiz again, good luck! :)

Curious to know what 24 is. I have tried very hard to crack that one. Came across two games that match the overall aesthetic.

February Quiz - Answers & Score

A tough beginning of the new quiz year is now over. Nobody got everything right and just a handful of games have been guessed by more than 50% of all players. This means you can be proud of correctly guessing a title... because probably most participants won't have gotten it. ;)

Warning: There are some unmarked spoilers in the comments, as some "big guns" are part of the narrative of the game (think about doomsday devices in J-RPGs).

This was definitely a tough one for me but I got frustrated looking for a couple (and annoyingly I saw the correct games but didn't confirm they were the images so I didn't enter the titles on like three or four of them) so I ultimately just gave up and stopped bothering looking for more. Congrats to the rest but this simply wasn't the quiz for me. Turns out I apparently don't pay attention to weaponry in games!

For 24, I narrowed it down to Homeworld & Sins of a Solar Empire (used in a previous quiz).

Never heard of Swords of Stars, though! Guess I'm not the only one. :p

I missed 17, 18, 22, 24 and 25 if I remember right.
Looking at the answers, I had The Battlefleet Gothic Armada on my shortlist but couldn't find the exact ship for some reason and just gave up on that.:surrenderblob:
And 22, Subnautica, I knew I had seen it fairly recently but just couldn't place it.
