I don't expect a super good month myself, outside of couple specific games and genres DOS is a bit of a blindspot.

March Quiz - Clues #1

Many participants have felt an awakening of old childhood and youth memories, lots of pictures seem familiar somehow... that's how it's supposed to go. ;)

The "DOS classics" are one of the riddles where the name "retrogamequiz" is really fitting. 33 people already joined, and now it's time for some clues!

Clues #1:

1) There are nine graphics adventures in this round (almost all of them point&click).
2) The games #2, #5 and #15 are first person shooters (but number five also packs some additional genres).
3) Title #3 is the first of a trilogy, and it was ported to all kinds of systems from Game Boy Color to Atari Jaguar.
4) With #12 we have a western RPG that plays in Europe during the late middle ages.

Deadline is Wednesday the 31st of March, please participate via Video Game Quiz - March - DOS Classics #3

Here is the quiz again, good luck!

Without research I only know five. I didn't really care about and get into PC gaming until around the last 90s so while I can recognize some DOS games I have a pretty low knowledge overall. I'm just I'll be able to find more with searching around but I'm not terribly hopeful of a high score :D

March Quiz - Clues #2

So Ladies and Gentlemen, it is Sunday the 28th... this means there's only four days to participate in this classic retro round. So can you dig out your MS-DOS memories and find those games? :)

So far there are 45 players, and four from this forum.

Here is the final sprint - with the last clues:

1) Game 16 follows a Disney cartoon movie.
2) Title 7 is part of a sci fi action franchise with lots of games, books, a movie and a cartoon series.
3) Number 19 is (in the USA) one of many games to a series of movies and books.
4) Game 17 is a point&click adventure with horror elements, released in the early 90s.

Deadline is Wednesday the 31st of March, participate via Video Game Quiz - March - DOS Classics #3

Here the quiz one last time, good luck!

I didn't know 19, 23 and 24. I was so sure that 19 was one of the Indiana Jones adventure games but I couldn't find a matching screen. Turns out it wasn't that at all, no wonder I didn't find it. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

April Quiz - Espionage

You are a secret agent? You infiltrate heavily guarded facilities, can handle your gun (nevermind, ALL GUNS), and for your government or unspecified secret organisation you go to the limits of your very special abilities? Then this is the place for you - we need capable people to identify these 25 games!

All titles are (sometimes more, sometimes less) about agents, hitmen or spies - and in the bonus question you can complain about how I forgot to put genre classic XYZ in this mix. ;)

Deadline is Friday the 30th of April, please participate via Video Game Quiz - April - Espionage

Here is the quiz, good luck agent!

Well, you are still clearly above average with your current score. :)

There's about 60 players right now, which is a bit low (three from here). So any late joiners, now would be the time - this quiz ends tomorrow!

May Quiz - Make a Wish!

In the first quiz of this year I had asked for your wishes - so which game should appear in one of my riddles to make you especially happy. This month your wish might come true, so take a close look. :)
Because of this rounds nature there is no bigger theme connecting the 25 games, they reach over all decades, genres and platforms... but there is one special rule, which says that if you don't recognise your own wish, you get a penalty point. D:

Wibblewozzer and FunnyJay : I had some personal stuff going this month (and nice weather...), so the quiz got posted a bit later than usual - normally I have it online before the 10th of the month. :)

Deadline is Monday the 31st of May, participate via Video Game Quiz - May - Make a Wish

Here is the quiz, good luck!

Thanks for the new quiz! I like this one already.

And I'm already going crazy over a few entries I KNOW I've seen before, but can't identify for the life of me. :thinking-blob: Ah well, it's a long month still.

May Quiz - Clues #1

Of the over 80 suggestions for a new user generated quiz, only 25 could make it into this Make-a-wish round... with a bit of luck your game is there too, so take a close look. :)

It is by no means an easy round, more a random chaos instead, so I will give you some clues again - here are the Clues #1:

1) Game 14 is the grandfather of a RPG series that was released for DOS computers.
2) Number 18 is an exclusive game for the Atari 2600, released in the early 80s.
3) With the 19 we have an fps with a focus on multiplayer, appearing first on Xbox 360 and Windows in 2009.
4) Title 20 is loosely based on a bible story, you fight some angels in melee combat.

Deadline is Monday the 31st of May, participate via Video Game Quiz - May - Make a Wish

Here ist the quiz again, good luck to all of you:

Awesome, thanks for the hints. I now know what 14 & 18 are. :) For 14 in particular, I found the art style similar to a bunch of previous games released by the same company. Wasn't sure at first, but now I am!

Submitted my first go, 15 so far. Some of the ones I'm missing I'll probably get eventually, have some kind of AHA moment out of the blue.

May Quiz - Clues #2

So far there are 36 players, and eight users have already succesfully recognised the games they wished for. Nice! :) However, in this round the entry #14 has caused questions in several communities, and I have since come to realise that this title's engine has been used in so many other RPGs (I count at least eight), that it amounts to an impossible task - nobody has gotten it right.

I am therefore making an exception this time, and will accept every game using the same engine as a correct answer. If you already entered an answer like that, it is now treated as a correct entry.

Here are the Clues #2:

1) Number 9 is a game from this decade, where you explore an unknown (and very colorful) planet.
2) The plot of title 13 plays entirely under water.
3) Game 16 is a simple platformer that was released between 93 & 94 for only Nintendo and Commodore platforms.
4) The #12 isn't a Game Boy title, it was released for a range of modern platforms. You play an octopus with unusual skills.

Deadline is Monday the 31st of May, participate via Video Game Quiz - May - Make a Wish

Here is the quiz again, you can do this!

This one was extremely hard.
I think if there's a theme to a month it helps narrowing things down. This time it's more random as it's only player wishes, so the titles could be anything.
Average score is lower than usual, so I agree that this is not an easy quiz. Your score is still above average though. :)

@all - one week left before this round ends!

May Quiz - last weekend!

So my ladies and gentlemen, sixtyfour people are already in the game, three of these from this community. It's a tough round, so you get one last set of help... now join in, this riddle ends tomorrow!

Here are the Clues #3:

1) Game 5 was first released on Dreamcast, and later for the GBA.
2) Title 4 belongs to the Metroidvania genre.
3) Number 6 has a famous slow motion function.
4) A well known series has two entries in this quiz.

May Quiz - Answers & Score

The make-a-wish round is over - was your game in it? :) Once again lots of people joined, but a full score was only awarded once... some of your wishes were just to mean. ;) Scroll down to see who made it.
Three users whose games were featured in this round did not actually play - KHlover, goschi and Thrawn. Also we got Shades, who joined but didn't recognise his own wish (that's a penalty point!). How did this happen?? :)

A quick update on the quiz in general, with good news and bad news: This round we say good bye to two communities, the Videogameszone and the PCX Forum. Both have been in the game for many years, but for the past months they just didn't have enough participants anymore. :/ The good news however is the ntower community, who joins in with a strong count of seven players. Welcome to the quiz fellas! :D

Ugh, I can't believe I couldn't recall number 22. I should've just gone through Ross's old game dungeon videos and it would've been obvious. :p

Looking forward to the next one!

Edit: Also, someone submitted Ghost of Tsushima as an entry for number 7. Say what.

Parsnip I wonder if I got a half point for that and something else, or he just accepted Warhammer, since I wrote something like Warhammer Game #437.

Valdien While I'm reluctant to answer anything unless I'm certain (which has bitten me a load of times as my guess would have been correct) I expect some people just write in anything they want on any field they know they simply don't know.

Yeah I don't mind repeating it - just guess around a bit. You actually got the full point for Warhammer. :)

- - -

Here are the results of the age survey of the May quiz:

So across all 21 communities, the average player is roughly 38 years old.

In the NintendoLife I was able to find a single teenager, and one player from the English Amiga Board is over sixty. That community is the oldest one anyway, 49 years on average.

The youngest forums/players are the NintendoLife and you folks here at the MetaCouncil, on average just shy of 32 years old.

That leads me to to a question, where do people under 30 go for their gaming news? Some discords? News pages, but not the forums? Twitch or Youtube, as video is king? Or am I getting it all wrong as I am equating my nerdy quiz players with the entire forum. ;)

In my case, it's a bunch of things. YT, sub-reddit, forums, etc. Not twitch, though. I don't really follow any streamers. When it comes to Retro games, my main sources are Ross Scott/Accursed Farms and John Linneman from DF. Both of 'em talk about and cover a lot of retro games. For Warhammer related content & 4x/Grand Strategy games (even though I don't play them much), it's Mandalore.

June Quiz - SEGA

Few companies have made a name for themselves as manufacturers of both quality hard- and software, and SEGA is undoubtedly among them. From famous arcade machines to the top consoles of the 80s and 90s (and their bizarre add ons), from total gameplay classics to freaky japanese quirkiness, this company just has it all.

To make a coherent picture of that with just 25 games is not possible, so I won't pretend this riddle is in any way a complete list of SEGAs most important work. Just take it as a selection of big and small titles on SEGA hardware. :) Yes it'll be difficult again, but you will surely recognise a few names in the first two rows.

Many (but not all) of the games were developed by SEGA and its teams, and all games were released on SEGA consoles (or its arcade machines).

About the survey: I promise to stop with the demographic questions, starting July it'll be only about videogames again. :)

Deadline is Wednesday the 30th of June, participate via Video Game Quiz - June - SEGA

Ohhh, a Sega quiz. First one is EZ. That fish has been burned in my memory. :sweaty-blob:

Recognise about 10 at first glance, but should be easy enough to figure out the rest since I'm pretty familiar with Sega.

Here's to yet another month where I land dead-ass last and drag the MC average down!
Nah, I never calculate average scores by forum. :)
If you play, you contribute to your (and your forums) end-of-year score, there is never a downside to joining!

I know next to nothing of Sega, we'll see how this goes.
Well Sega has made some famous titles, I am sure you'll recognise plenty. :)
