June Quiz - Clues #1

SEEEEE-GAAAA! That's really some masterful sound branding here... and you can be masterful too, when you ace this round because you have had some Sega in your live. ;) So far no one of the 35 players has achieved a full score.

But why am I still talking? Here's the first set of clues:

1) This time there's 9 games for the Dreamcast, 6 for the Saturn, 3 each for Master System and Arcade, 2 for the Genesis and one entry for SegaCD and 32X.
2) Three titles have "Sonic" in their name, but only for the first one I will accept "Sonic" as the correct answer.
3) Game 11 and 15 are both strategy RPGs in a steampunk setting, released on Saturn.
4) Number 20 is a racing game with airplanes.

Deadline isWednesday the 30th of June, please participate via Video Game Quiz - June - SEGA

Damn, was hoping there'd be a hint for No. 25. It's the only one I can't figure out. Guess I'll submit my answers. :p

I know generally the difficulty is meant to get harder with each game in the sequence but for me the fourth row and the fifth row should be flipped. I made zero progress on the fourth row (outside of the gimme with the hint) and the last row I got three of the five really easily.

Mr_Horizon By the way, the Sonic Shuffle picture isn't the same! To be honest the sharpness of the original image is what threw me off a ton. I assumed it must be arcade for it to be so high res compared to other stuff. But oh well!

You are right, the Sonic Shuffle image was a bit of trickery. I wanted to kick it out and have some Sidescrolling Brawler instead (should have done that instead of two Saturn Steampunk RPGs...) because I couldn't get a screenshot I liked, but then I found this tweet. I loved that bizarre fish so much that I decided to have that as the quiz picture. I promise in the future we will have only regular screengrabs again. :)

July Quiz - Retro Pixel 2021

I know you all are disappointed about the lack of 4K in the new Switch, but come on: do we really need more than the 320x200 of the 90s? ;) This month you may again throw yourself into a pixel soup of zoomed-up characters and try to find the right game name out of twentyfive wildly different titles. Good luck! :)

Deadline is Saturday the 31st of July, participate via Video Game Quiz - July - Retro Pixel

July Quiz - Clues #1

No question, after the slightly easier Sega Quiz you've got some work to do this time.... It's a tough selection of titles and just 13 players (with modest scores) have turned up after the first week. Then actually, Parsnip doesn't seem to mind. ;) Now there is some help from me, I hope this can serve as motivation. :)

Hints #1:

1) In the games 1 to 4 there is a lot of shooting, but in indie game #5 there is "dancing".
2) Titles 7 and 13 are horizontal autoscrolling shoot'em'ups with arcade versions from the 90s.
3) Title #12 is an 80s home computer game with Gauntlet-like gameplay.
4) Game 6 is a turn-based strategy title with permadeath for computer and Switch.

July Quiz - Clues #2

Ouch, the month has less than ten days left and just 24 people (none from here) are in the game. Looks like I finally actually overdid it with the difficulty!
But see it this way, was it ever easier to land on the upper spots in the high score? Especially as just a single user managed to barely achieve the twenty points threshold.

Here is the second set of clues, I wish for lots of inspiration as well as motivation! :)

1) Game #2 is a well known Indie Metroidvania from the past decade.
2) That figure on picture 11 is not some horizontally scrolling Knight, but rather a very vertical King!
3) The Titles 10 and 16 are both platformers with a soccer/football theme, which they also carry in their names.
4) The games 3, 10, 12, 15, 17 and 18 (plus two from the last row) were released on the Commodore Amiga, number 15 even as an exclusive.

Deadline is Saturday the 31st of July, participate via Video Game Quiz - July - Retro Pixel

July Quiz - Clues #3

Sixty people in the game, five from here, and zero with a full score? Well, then I'm helping one last time - so that all the fair-weather people can get back to their screens and maybe one particularly creative nerd will guess everything correctly after all. :)

Here is the third and last portion of clues, because this round ends this Saturday:

1) The Penguin Game #9 first appeared as an arcade title in 1982.
2) The #17 has you shoot up some crazy TV show and also first came out as an arcade game.
3) Look at #19! That's rare indeed, a Sega Saturn exclusive.
4) Game #8 is a story-heavy platformer from 2019, you control a robot.

Deadline is this Saturday the 31st of July, enter via Video Game Quiz - July - Retro Pixel

July Quiz - answers & score

That's the way I like it - about 100 participants (okay, 95), lots of good entries and exactly ONE player with full score... a truly deserved first place. :) The difficulty level was a bit higher, so I had to help with more clues. I hope you had fun though!

You'll see who it is at the end of this post, now first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the high score.

1) Mega Man 6
Only one player did not know the "Blue Bomber"....

Question:
How do I have a fractional higher score than mssq? Where does the decimals come from?
I know ties are sorted by the time they're received with the person that sends it in first coming out ahead. I'm assuming that's where that comes from.

If instead there are hidden fractions of a point for naming exact game names instead of franchise names or something it could be from that but I don't think that's ever come up. I only really know of the time factor.

I'm amazed Smash TV had such a low percentage. That was a total gimme for me and it's a huge classic game. I was surprised it was in the fourth row as that would ba a first row game if I was ordering things. But the percentage of answers (and apparently needed hints) were needed to help boost the percentage up? I honestly thought it was meant to trick me because it seemed too easy so I was worried it was some Smash TV-like game and even looked up Total Carnage thinking I misremembered what that looked like and that was the trick.

Anyhow, had fun with this one. I could have really used a more direct hint for the last row since I had nothing for those.

Arabian Nights was interesting, since I recognized Soccer Kid and double checked Wikipedia or some such, which mentioned another game called Arabian Nights.
The artstyle on the player character is identical.

Also, I so recognized the Turrican sprite, but was convinced it was from Probotector...

Question:
How do I have a fractional higher score than mssq? Where does the decimals come from?
The points are weighted depending on how many people got the answer correct. Last round is a nice example, as only one person didn't know "Mega Man", while only one person had the answer to "Lunar Lander". In the old system, both games would have given the same amount of score, but would that have been fair? So to solve this, I have started to use an excel formula to add small decimal amounts to each point, depending on the answer rate:

Mega Man 6 has an answer rate of 99%, the correct answer is worth 1.0011 points.
Lunar Lander has an answer rate of 1%, the correct answer is worth 1.0989 points.
Jump King has an answer rate of 53%, the correct answer is worth 1.0474 points.

Those scores are added together, which forms a much better ranking that just "sort by entry time".
Here are all users with "12 points" with their full score listed:

That's right! I don't like using timestamps to decide who gets the higher position, but sometimes I have to.

If instead there are hidden fractions of a point for naming exact game names instead of franchise names or something it could be from that but I don't think that's ever come up.
No, there's no bonuses for correct franchise installments. :)

I'm amazed Smash TV had such a low percentage. That was a total gimme for me and it's a huge classic game.
I also was surprised that it needed a hint to get more correct answers, as it was successful ported to so many systems. Well, you never know in advance!

Anyhow, had fun with this one. I could have really used a more direct hint for the last row since I had nothing for those.
Well, the new rule is that there's never direct hints for the last row. ;) You have to work hard to get more than twenty points!

Of the ones I didn't get, Arabian Nights was the most obvious one I missed.
I am actually surprised that Arabian Nights is so well known. That's an Amiga exclusive, how did you all get to see/play it?

The weighted points is a fun change. You probably mentioned it some previous time but if you did I obviously hadn't remembered.

I guess no hints for the last row makes some sense. But it sure can feel brutal!

And I think I found Arabian Nights by accident as I was looking for the sports focused games. I often look through lists of Amiga games or skim through videos of them and I think I was just looking through loads of platformers and happened to spot it. Amusingly I misread the hint/numbers and thought you had said it was one of the sports games so I was super confused but my early searches were for things with sports players wearing fezes. I dropped that after a minute when I realized my error but I was so confused before realizing it.

The players have decided, the next round is all about puzzles!

Not quite what I expected (my "time travel" material collection was already done...) and not really my genre either, but let's have a look. :) So this time it's about puzzle games and puzzles in games... lots of expected classics are included, but I've tried for a few surprises too!

Deadline is Tuesday 31st of August, enter via Video Game Quiz - August - Riddles & Puzzles

Here comes the quiz, enjoy:

September Quiz - Time Travel

Good old time travel is a popular stylistic device to make a story a bit more interesting (dinosaurs! AND laser weapons!). In video games, Max Payne taught us about "bullet time", and some modern titles use time as a gameplay element even beyond slow motion. In this round you have 25 representatives in one bunch, do you know them all? :)

Deadline is Thursday the 30th of September, participation via Video Game Quiz - September - Time Travel

Here comes the quiz, have fun:

This one was quite easy for me since I'm a fan of time travel based games, even if I haven't played half of the games on the list. I've seen all of them at least once before, though.
