|OT| The 'I need a new phone' thread.

The fuck, yeah that is the absolute worst thing about Apple, they are so goddammed puritan! How long before they autocensor dickpics?
Yeah what the fuck, I don't want to be prevented from joining servers.

Yeah that is fucked up. I understood on the Tumblr app that you couldn't search or find NSFW stuff, but it you already followed then you could see it. The same for Flickr. But yeah it is messed up with discord.
I'm seriously considering to go back to Android now lmao

I already got my new phone, but I'll post anyway! My Xiaomi Mi A1 was dying after 3 years. It was really good for a $220 phone, but it was showing its age. My wishlist was stock Android and reliable updates, plus I don't game on mobile so no need for flagship specs either. I was kind of hesitant about going Pixel, considering Google's poor track record with the hardware on Nexus and Pixel phones. But wanting stock Android doesn't leave me with a lot of choice.

So I'm now rocking the Pixel 4a. It doesn't feel like a major upgrade but I appreciate some of the new software features like selecting text from the Recents menu. The cutout camera didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Gestures take some getting used to but they're not bad. It's still awkward for apps with side drawers that haven't updated to account for back navigation. Disabled adaptive brightness and adaptive charging because they were useless. I was looking forward to the camera but the results were kind of meh. I think I'm just bad at taking photos. :cryblob:

Oh, I have two sim cards but forgot to check if the Pixel 4a had physical dual sim slots. Luckily the phone supports eSIM so that turned out to be a non-issue. One telco (the consumer-friendly one) lets you convert to eSIM online fuss-free, so it was painless to set up.

I think I need a new phone. The power button of my Galaxy S8 just fell off today, lol (I don't know exactly when and where the button is right now, but it's definitely not on the phone  )

Served me well the ...4 years? I had and I got it with a very good deal, so it's fine. I don't really need the power button either but it's noticeably getting clunkier recently (the loading port is somewhat loose and the battery has been getting worse and worse). Nothing I can't deal with but combined it's probably a sign that I should just replace it.

I really don't need anything high-end and I really don't care about custom android stuff, so I'm thinking of going a bit more budget this time - it seems like even the "high end" phones kinda start falling apart after 3-4 years anyway so why bother. The Pixel 4a seems nice. It's basically just a side-grade at best in terms of hardware (pretty much the same size and specs, some stuff actually seems to be sliiiightly worse even but not really much), but it should really be enough for my purposes - which are basically browsing the internet, reading webnovels/webtoons and listening to music/podcasts, lol.

I've been eyeing a Xiaomi Poco F3. It looks quite nice for the price point.

Just got one after my 5 year old phone (Mi 5) has slowed to a crawl and sometimes blank out my contacts preventing calls/video call. Huge upgrade for me at least. Everything is so smooth, 120hz, oled display is pretty great. I can now see why hdr is so great with this phone. puts my lg 27gl850 "hdr400" monitor to shame.

Tried some games but touch controls frustrate me other than for endless runner. Unfortunately still can't play F-Zero GX at full speed on Dolphin. I can play a few lighter gamecube games though which is great. Anything below gamecube like dc, psx runs smooth.

Still can't find a decent telescopic usb type c controller for android. Only Gamesir and Razer overpriced junk. Playing with xbox and clip is pretty top heavy and not comfortable for longer session but that's the best so far if you want decent latency.

Usually don't want to pay more than $250 for a phone since I don't use it more than calls/whatsapp/ordering food but for $380 i paid for it, it's a pretty great deal for what I'm getting.

I really want a Samsung Fold phone lmao

Fold 7 user here - It's pretty good but I've only had it for 4 months now. Jury's still out for how it holds up long-term.

I can say that it doesn't seem to noticeably throttle when playing Star Rail for a normal-length session, but the real gaming concern with foldables is Battery-Charge - Phones in general really, but the Fold has 1,000 less mAh than Samsung's flagships usually have.

The real power of Folding Phones is in that they're probably the best Touch Keyboard experience money can buy since - At least in the Fold 7's case, the two halves of the screen are about the length of my thumbs, and the keyboard buttons in the default keyboard are the perfect size for quickly thumb-typing without worrying about hitting the wrong keys.

What's a normal length session? I play ZZZ, Pokémon TCGP, Pokémon Go and Umamusume no more than 10 minutes each, every day.

I mean I guess that's about it. Sometimes I'd go to around 30-45 minutes if I'm stuck waiting somewhere with nothing else to do, like getting an oil change. Beats doomscrolling at least. I usually try to bring a battery pack for those scenarios.

TBH I play these games primarily on PC so I'm not sure gaming capability is much of a phone selling point for me anymore. It's the keyboard factor that's primarily been what I've liked about my Fold 7 so far, + the splitscreen functionality.
