Le Pertti has recently asked for any recommendations of what to see while in Oslo, and, having been there before, I sent some over ...

He then suggested we should make a travel thread, a place to share travel recommendations, tips, stories; maybe places you've been that are beautiful or interesting, or places you want to go and ask others if they've been and what they suggest to check out.

I've recommended the following for Oslo — a beautiful city that is large but doesnt really feel that way, with plenty of lovely spots:
  • Akershus Fortress: historic open military defense base, has a couple of cool old buildings, some museums, and nice vantage points overlooking the Oslo fjord.
  • Aker Brygge: not too far away from the fortress is this new-ish modern area, has cool restaurants, shops, interesting architecture, museums. theres the National Museum, for example, which is quite extensive (but not expensive)!
  • The Royal Palace + the boulevard leading up it (Karl Johans gata) — the castle is quite impressive, along the way theres the Storting (parliament) and other cool buildings, and the castle itself has nice gardens you can walk around in.
  • Munch Museum: close to the Opera house is the Edward Munch museum, quite nice + very interesting! The opera house itself is also cool, and you can walk on top of it; giving a nice vantage point towards the Oslo fjord.
  • In the Oslo fjord, theres a bunch of fjord tours; if you can get one thats not too crowded, thats a nice ride.
  • the Holmenkollen ski jumping museum: you can get all the way up there and its quite the view!
  • Norwegian Museum of Cultural History: an open air area where theres plenty of preserved houses from Norwegian history, including a Stave church; very cool place! its just a short boat ride across the fjord. There's a museum about martime history (the Frammuseet) nearby, as well.
  • I havent gone to visit it, but the City Hall is also very cool looking!

Funnily enough, I've been to Norway twice now — and Oslo, while being amazing, was both times just the beginning. Its a beautiful country with one amazing spot after the other. And it pays off to explore! For example, the car drive from Oslo to Stavanger was the highlight of our summer vacation this year.
Exploring and not staying in one place for longer than a few days has generally been the way we've ("we" being my partner and I) travelled in the last couple years and its a nice contrast to "laying in the sun for 10 days" (as nice as that can be)...but seeing something new all time is incredibly enriching.

Now I'm curious to the places you've been, what you recommend anyone should see once in their lives!

I'll visit countries once I settle down.
Ideas - Anywhere in Europe (Austria, Berlin for friends, Amsterdam for friends, Switz mainly), Singapore, Japan.

However in India, I've gone almost everywhere.

Best places to go
  • Bengaluru (and nearby green landscapes)
  • State of Kerala
  • Goa (for parties)
  • Chandigarh + Amritsar
  • Varanasi
  • Seven Sisters states
  • Leh for biking experience
  • North Indian Himalayan adjacent places (Kullu-Manali, Shimla)
Where NOT to go (at least, at first)
  • Delhi
  • Mumbai

I didn't know we had more travel afficionados in Metacouncil

I love a good trip, either of the road variety (California is amazing for this) or on plane. Trains are great but sadly we don't have good service here in the US so I don't frequently get to use them unless I'm in the EU or Asia.

The big planned vacation this year is to Italy and Ireland. Northern Italy so like Milan and surrounding area, and the Dublin Ireland and a bunch of nearby towns. Open to any recommendations if folks have them.

I just got back from a belated honeymoon to New Zealand with a couple of stops in Australia.

Landed in Perth for a few days to see my old mate who moved there 20+ years ago. Was lovely to reconnect with a good old friend.
Then we flew into Christchurch for a few days, hired a car and made our way down to Queenstown via a load of beautiful lakes and mountains. Then back to Sydney for a couple of days before flying home.

In Sydney our plane got delayed, we got stuck in the hotel lift, we forgot about daylight savings so got up at 2am instead of 3am for the new flight. Plane was then delayed further so it took an age to get home. Landed about midnight Sunday, both had work Monday morning. Still pretty knackered.

But the trip was amazing, New Zealand South Island is a wonderful place, gorgeous mountains and lakes, lovely peoples. We got married at the tail end of covid and so couldn't (and didn't want to) go on a honeymoon then. Saved up since then for this trip. Loved it. Would recommend.
