|OT| Valve's Steam Deck (OLED)- coming to Straya in Nov 2024

Mivey Didn’t think about the cloud, that’s really unfortunate but as you have experienced, the dlc implementation is lacking at best.

But let it not be said that I’m only hating, I have good news (prepare to give some heavily backhanded compliment)…
The linux version of RetroArch seems to play very well with the Deck. Added as non steam, no issue of scaling at first glance. So it’s good old RetroArch, horribly dense UI, laughable scan, a thumbnail once every blue moon. RetroArch.
But.It.Works.

Assigning one of the back paddles to opening the menu and I’m already ‘this is the promised land’.

I really need a usb hub though, no way I fight the thumbnail war with RA with trackpads. I mean they do a decent job and it’s not like I’m averse to wasting my time. But I don’t hate existence and all that is good in the world.

I tried capturing some direct footage gameplay and while it works great, I am not sure it's worth showing since it's 720p and that probably looks ugly when you give it youtube to compress.

I also tried simultaneous capturing and filming the deck. In desktop mode you can mirror the screens but obviously there is some performance hit - plus you can't set the main screen to a 16:9 resolution and the capture card is locked to 720p or 1080p. So there is some weird scaling and cut-off issues going on with mirror screens. It was a neat idea I had showing off games but sadly it's not working as I hoped. Maybe there is some workaround to get the main screen to 1280x720p ?

yeah I recommend that for everything you wanna do on the desktop. theres rather cheap unpowered ones even in supermarkets :)
I don’t know, my quick look on amazon returned a 42 euros hub. Oh yeah, powered though.

What did you do / play people ?

I didn't get a mail.
I suppose at least my personal estimations at the beginning of this shipping process that had me getting a mail next week at the earliest are now more validated!

These glorious motherfuckers at RA. Incredible.
I spent the morning cleaning up my local install and fixing the deck one. So far so good. But Snatcher wouldn't start. Like, no siree. I had put the bios in the right location. I double checked, I triple checked, I tried setting up another location. I doubted my sanity.
Turns out that while windows RA doesn't care for it one bit, linux RA expect the correct upper and lower case characters.

I won. But at what price ?

-

And in other non moaning news, I would be very tempted to try Have a Nice Death or Core Keeper on the little beauty.

I think everyone who has used Windows all their life has a learning point in their macOS or Linux journey where they discover that filenames in those operating systems are case sensitive.

go go go go

There are still two more weeks of Q1 emails to go. I don't think they've suggested they won't be on schedule to finish Q1 in Q1 so hopefully that sticks. Because I want my Q2 email :minos_hd:

For whatever reason my deck says there's an update but it won't update because the battery is below 20%... it isn't it's fully charged.
Also the remote play feature is wonky, default works fine, after changing options in the advanced section to have fps up to 60 the volume is coming out of the PC speakers instead of the deck, to have it come out of the deck I gotta swap to default or disconnect the speakers.

These 2 things, especially the update thing, really annoy me

I feel like the recent update(s) broke more untested games than they added to verified :(

Have you tried switching back and forth to beta/stable?

I know it’s a dumb suggestion, but just in case, did you restart ? Maybe even shut down and restart ?
There is also a way to factory reset, I think.

It went through something like 30 minutes after it went live (stupid shitty servers)

I feel for you. My Creditcard was declined. Afterwards I tried a different method of payment and my account was flagged for having too many outstanding payments. 1 hour later and I got through. I am in Q2 so I have to wait and see.

Yes I tried everything in the book short of a factory reset which shouldn't be necessary as the only thing I did was insert my account, I've had this thing since monday but I'm already seeing it as a buggy brick, I'm certainly not impressed.
I also keep getting the fucking 20% battery error when the battery is fully charged.

somehow plugging in my deck while updating like someone suggested me on ERA worked, now only the wonky sound during remote play is left

Good to hear, in fact I might recall now that pluging the Deck for the first update is necessary to get it out of some factory mode.

While I played through Elden Ring mostly on my PC, maybe 10-15hours were on the Deck. Now that ER is out of the way, I will play more on the Deck. It is just perfect to fiddle around with while watching Netflix or Twitch on the TV (replacing the Smartphone to a degree).
I finished Mark of the Ninja Remastered already on the Deck - but even if that one is "Verified", I had multiple crashes in the later levels (those with lots of particle effects in the background screens). Which was annoying but the loading times are only 10-15 seconds from Deck menu to back in the level and the game has generous quick saves.
I started with Ys IX now which is "Unsupported" but thanks to Durante's hints I only added "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%" as a launch option and the game runs perfect (60 fps, with small dips in combat).

Elden Ring is the main reason why I dont play more on the Deck yet. I mean, I played some Elden Ring on it already, but its better suited for a bigger screen.

Anyway I ran into an issue. I wanted to set my Deck to offline mode to take it outside, but upon restart, it got stuck on the logo load screen....and multiple restarts didnt help, neither did connecting it to the USB hub. I dunno what to do now short of reinstalling SteamOS? I'll troubleshoot more later, maybe I can find something online. I also tweeted at Lawrence Yang (from Valve), since he's very active on Twitter, maybe he sees it. Doubt it tho.

I've been using my Deck more than my desktop PC the past two weeks. I've finished Dark Souls 3 on the Deck, and now I'm playing some indie games that have been in my backlog forever (Hive Swap Friendsim, Streets of Fury Ex, Trine 4 etc). Most of these games haven't been tested by valve, but they run perfectly without tweaking. Mass Effect Remastered is next.

It's Linux,so maybe you could connect a keyboard and see if you can change the TTY: What is a TTY on Linux? (and How to Use the tty Command)

Once at the terminal, you could check the logs for any issues: What are Linux Logs? How to View Them, Most Important Directories & More

If nothing else helps, Valve does provide a way of setting up a fresh install of Steam OS: Steam Support :: Steam Deck Recovery Instructions

aye, TTY change was the first thing i tried, however i didnt have a lot of time to troubleshoot, so i didnt get anywhere (mostly because i didnt know the default login and couldnt find with online – at least not right away). gonna resume trying to get it to come back to the living now :)

I think the first thing you need to do is plug it in to get it out of factory mode... I hope thats your Deck isnt messed up.. :/

i got mine back alive by reinstalling. took a while. it got stuck in an "installing..." loop for a while

i really hope valve sorts these kinds of issues out before they ships tens of thousands or more. would be a support nightmare otherwise.
