|OT| Valve's Steam Deck (OLED)- coming to Straya in Nov 2024

Yeah, I know the feeling. I’m still a little cross that Valve’s systems fucked me over when ordering, so I’m going to get more annoyed and sad the longer I wait.

They need to work out a better purchase system for hardware next time rather than first come, first serve.

The way I'm coping with it is: The bigger the wait the better chance I have to get a bug-free OS and a better UX.

I honestly can't remember. I think it was about 1 hour 45 minutes after deposits went live, so I'm honestly surprised I got into Q2.
So frustrating.

I'm a US 512gb and my rtReserveTime is 1626456968. Converting that from UNIX Time, that's Friday, July 16, 2021 1:36:08 PM ET. In the calculators I range from mid-May to early-June. Hoping for mid-May!

I feel robbed of my Q1 spot. I got an email from Steam in the last few days of Q1 to confirm and pay for my Q1 Steam Deck. Then few days later, specifically today, I hear from Deku he got an email already to confirm his Q2 Steam Deck...

Got my Steam Deck 256 today. Managed to pay reservation about 25 minutes after opening and was in the last Q1 batch. Paid last monday, received this monday from GLS. They even arrived exactly as they said in their SMS message.

A few impressions:

  • I installed 12 games so far: cyberpunk 2077, death stranding, disco elysium, black book, katana zero, aperture desk job, darksiders genesis, fable anniversary, ion fury, narita boy, paradise killer, neon abyss. They all work pretty much like on a console - up and running, no fuss to worry about. I basically only adjusted the framerate cap. Out of the 227GB available internally, 35GB of free space remains.
  • The games look really nice on that display, Cyberpunk on a handheld is just kinda mindblowing and runs stable 30fps on medium
  • death stranding and cyberpunk about 2 hours battery life, ion fury at 60fps five hours battery life, disco elysium 60fps about three hours
  • the fan is audible and has a high pitch - I don't notice it much when playing, but it's a con and I could do without it
  • cloud saves are a really cool thing, not having to deal with anything and being able to pick up where I left off on PC
  • the deck is heavier than I expected. Not a big deal, but it takes some getting used to and it's not easy (or possible, really) to hold from the side with one hand. I played on a 1989 gameboy as a six year old, the Steam Deck is three times heavier and not for little kids.
  • The touchpads for controlling the cursor work very well, it's nice to work on a KDE plasma desktop
  • the aperture desk job is a half hour little game, but it looks great and is fun (and the gyro is cool)
  • the internal speaker has surprisingly great sound. The Darksiders Genesis soundtrack is fantastic (same composer who did Ori)

I am satisfied customer - steam deck will make my in-office downtime way more entertaining.

Big Deck vs Small Deck - TV vs Steam Deck (excuse terrible picture quality, 7 years old phone)

Sadly I cancelled my order of Steam Deck since I decided not to buy one. I recently bought a new laptop so I am in no need of a Steam Deck.

Anyone being able to play games and actually using the backpedals? They are too hard to press for my wimpy fingers and I can only reach the bottom to as well.

I have years of experience pressing the (slightly wonky) back buttons on the Steam Controller, and as such I feel like the Steam Deck back buttons are really easy to press -- I use them very frequently.

I used the SC pedals all the time too. I guess they were easier to press with the grip I had there.
Maybe I can try adjusting the way I hold it.

Steam Deck Client Update: Quicker Offline Mode, dual trackpad updates, and more

I have Duckstation and Dino Crisis on my Steam Deck. Was kind of confused at first since getting out of Full-screen didn't seem to work.
Set one of the mouse clicks as the bottom to do that though and that seemed to work.

If anyone has any tips for an easier way to get out of fullscreen with any emulation I'm all ears lol

Anyone playing Deathloop on the Deck? I am finding the performance and loading times really bad with this one.
Even low settings and with FSR the game struggles to hold 30fps at times - and this is a verified game.,

So upon longer playtime I found out that I do not actually find the high-pitch-frequency noise bearable. It is too annoying for my ears and brain. It gives me a headache. I feel like I am gonna develop tinnitus from it. I contacted support about possible RMA. If there are two versions of fans inside steam decks and mine does it while the other doesn't, I want the one that doesn't.

We started shipping Steam Deck just one month ago, and it’s been a huge thrill seeing it out in the wild in players’ hands. One of our favorite things about that is finally getting to hear from you about your experience using Steam Deck. This first month has given us a chance to start collecting your feedback as we continue our work to make Deck better in the months and years to come.

Deck Verified: 2000 strong and growing

In just one month we’ve passed a huge milestone with 2000 games now officially Deck Verified or Playable. It's been exciting to see the variety of games the community has been playing - new or old, big or small, every genre - it seems like players have been having a ton of fun on Deck. We're going to continue charging through the Steam catalog and can't wait to share the next big milestone here. We’re also listening carefully to customer feedback in this space, as we want to make sure the Deck Verified program is doing its job. To that end we’ve added a Feedback feature allowing customers to signal whether they agree or disagree with the Verified rating for each title.

Anti-cheat progress

One of our top priorities is to support as many titles on Steam as possible, and this includes titles that employ anti-cheat technology. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of developers, service providers, and Proton contributors we’ve made great progress in bringing these games to the Steam Deck community. The two biggest anti-cheat services, BattlEye and Easy Anti-Cheat, now have a streamlined path for developers that choose to enable support for Proton and Steam Deck. Elden Ring and Apex Legends are two examples of games which are taking advantage of this work, so far.

Steam Store and your Library

We’ve spent some time making the Steam Store more responsive and snappier on Deck. Plus we get that navigating through libraries can be unwieldy if you have a ton of games, so we’ve made it easier with fast scrolling. We’ve also added the ability to create dynamic collections within your library based on tags and other game characteristics.

…and connecting you to games beyond Steam

We worked closely with Microsoft to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to Steam Deck users through the Microsoft Edge browser, and members of the community contributed to the Edge Flatpak that makes this accessible on Steam Deck. To enable input for Edge (a Chromium-based browser), we collaborated with the Google Chrome team on adding native support for the Deck controller, so it can be detected directly by websites.

Keyboard

Since launch we’ve improved the on-screen keyboard experience as well. Dual trackpad typing is now available, the game mode keyboard is now available in Desktop mode, and we’ve even added a bunch of new keyboard themes so you can pick whatever suits your typing mood.

Power

Finding ways to improve battery life for Steam Deck is always high on our list. We find that depending on what you’re doing, you can expect between 2 and 8 hours of gameplay, but if you want to optimize for battery life even further there are additional options. In the past month we added the ability to reduce your framerate allll the way down to 15 fps (this setting works great for visual novels, puzzles and a lot of simulation games). And for those who love to tinker, we’ve made TDP (processor power), GPU Clock control, and FSR (screen scaling) settings available to optimize power even further.

Windows

While there is still driver work to do, you can now install Windows 10 (and soon, 11). We’ve been working with AMD and other partners and have been making steady progress on Windows Drivers. fTPM support is currently in beta, and once that ships Windows 11 can be installed. The last big piece is Windows audio drivers, and we hope to share good news about that soon.

Did we mention it’s a PC?

In the month since Steam Deck launched, we’ve seen folks using it as their work computer and main desktop; we’ve seen people using it to write code and for 3D modeling; and we’ve even seen the community starting to write software specifically for Steam Deck.

Planes, trains, and automobiles

And buses, parking lots, etc. People are sharing stories (and pictures) of how Steam Deck is keeping them busy (or happily distracted) while commuting, while waiting, and even while their kids are busy in an after-school class. We’re looking forward to seeing where you play yours next.

Speaking of what’s next (for us): More to come

Our goal continues to be finding ways to improve your experience on Steam Deck, and that means we’ll keep listening for your feedback. Please get in touch with us in the forums, and if you’re experiencing any issues with your Steam Deck, don’t hesitate to report the bug (we made a quick link to this available in the Quick Access Menu).

We’ve loved hearing about everyone’s excitement for Steam Deck, and are excited to get more of them into your hands. We’ve started shipping in higher quantities and production continues to accelerate. Please let us know what you all think. That’s all for now, but as always, there’s more to come.

As far as I understand it "verified" only means that the game does not crash and that text is readable etc.
The verified label does not say much (or anything?) about the performance of the game.

That is not quite accurate, as one of the requirements for a verified title is good performance at the default configuration.

Yep. It defaults to low but as I said, its not running great. And the loading times - sometimes I feel like the game crashes but then 1 minute later it continues.
I gave the feedback at least.

Chrono Cross launcher experience on Deck right now looks like this.

I would love to report this to Valve but, I don't know if there's a official channel to do so.

tbh i am really confused about this , i got mine in 3rd Q1 batch (so basically one of the first devices) and been playng it whole a lot for the past week (indies and aaas) .... and i still dont really understand what you guys all mean with the "high-pitch-frequency noise" thing.
Could be that i am used to lots of noises (i live next to train tracks for 7 years) , but i just havent really noticed that highpitch noice yet at all and comparatively with my other devices ... the deck is like one of the silent ones to my ears compared to my laptop, Win3 or even my NAS

so strange

Soo i did small experiment with Final Fantasy XIII-2 aka title thats marked
This game's graphics settings cannot be configured to run well on Steam Deck

first i tried proton 7:
- audio was crackling
- framedrops to like 12fps
then i tried protonGE
-framerate was even worse dropping to single digits
- audio was crackling s bit lrdd
final test was proton experiemental
  • to my surprise , no audio issues
  • and mostly stable-ish 30 with drops to like 22 only in intese battle attack¨

i would say we are quite close for this to be reverified , given the huge improvement between 7 and experimental

Maybe differing (unrealistic ?) expectations ? The thing has the form factor of an handheld, but no mainstream handheld has had this fan noise level. Just a thought, as I’m not even sure about my feeling toward this noise. Sometimes I hate it, but on some other occasions I find it strangely charming, so…

like yeas could be that , especially given all he mainstream handhelds of old are nowhere near the power this has , but i still dont really understand what poople mean by "huge fan noise level" ... personally i would even struggl to call this a noise ... just standard sound tech with fans does and comparatively its not even that noisy to me. Its not really that far from when i had switch borowed to try Astral Chain.

But i guess its me problem that i am used to computer/laptop/NAS/console laptop fans having a sound and not being silent.

Maybe you won the lottery and got the Deck with a better fan. There are 2 fans versions, one with a hissing, high pitch sound while on load, and the second one that makes a wooshing sound. You can check what type of fan you have if you remove the back cover. Delta fan is the better one IIRC. Valve should just stop putting the worse fan in the Deck, as it seems it is one of the biggest issue people have with the Deck.

I also think there needs to be better fan management. When I turn my Deck on from sleep and I am in a game - the fan starts up even with low temperatures.
I am not sure a constant "no fan" - "fan" -"no fan" cycle would be less annoying even, but maybe the speeds could be managed better as well - as I only counted 3 speeds - one of them being off.

huh interesting ... definitely didint hear the "coilwhiney" noise (tbh still silent compared to my laptop) on mine its mostly just "quite hum" most of the time for me .... the rest is still more silent than my NAS and within expecations for high load :face-savouring-delicious-food:
Although mine gets the more "noisy" while downloading from steam than in actual plaaying of modern AAA :-D

will still have to test around after weekend (dont really want to remove the back cover to check )

Mine doesn’t do that either. I would never call it strangely charming if that was the case.

Really interesting why the fan sound can be that different between essentially the same hardware. Either there are different fans being used (which would be kinda surprising) or alternatively, I imagine the problem might also be due to differences in the assembly, though I'm not sure how anything would cause a fan to change its pitch.

Proton/Wine got a community patch to fix Chrono Cross, it says it should be available via Experimental Bleeding Edge (which is enabled via Proton experimental options > beta > bleeding edge) but I couldn't make it run, anyone else who has the game on PC and has a Deck who can test this fix? Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Hm. My fan is mostly just whoosh-ing. I hear the high-pitched whiney sound somewhat when it's under full load and very little to not at all when it's under low/middle load, but it hasn't really bothered me. I don't know if that means if I have the "bad" fan and don't care, or have the "good" fan. :grimacing-face:

Anyway, I have now finished 5 games on the Deck, and it hasn't been 2 full weeks yet since I got the thing 😅
Not all of them very long, but still!
Suffice to say, I really like it.
