The marketing campaign for this game seems especially vile. Rockstar is spamming their trailer everywhere. Loud music and sound effects start playing without interacting with the advertisement, and clicking the mute or exit button is a trap that sends you off to some awful promotion website without stopping the music. Rockstar must hate their customers more than any other company in the video game industry.

My i5+970 combo is getting a real good run for its money. If there weren't weird artifacts like these, it sure would be more comfortable.

Vulkan is fundamentally broken (stutters & bad frametimes). But DX12 is smooth and just a tiny bit worse than Vulkan. So it's annoying but not the end of the world.

Most people are complaining because the game is badly optimized. Hard to judge currently, we'd need to know what settings consoles are using and compare performance with PC hardware that is relatively similar to consoles.

All I can say is: Certain Forums and PC crowds are dying over ULTRA settings. Having the latest and best hardware doesn't give you a free ticket to max out everything.

Ultra, but turning down Water physics to 50% alone is giving me +40% performance when there is a small river or even a tiny stream in the scene.
Further turning down from ULTRA to HIGH gives me another +30% performance on average (with advanced features still set to on) for example.

But than there are some people who aren't able to even start the game because the Rockstar Launcher is crashing. Most people are blaming Ryzen CPUs, but there are enough Intel reports too. Personally I'm also on Ryzen 3000 and the Client isn't crashing for me. Hard to tell what's the problem here, outdated Windows? it seems to be the Anti Virus sometimes, Rockstar is saying that you need the newest drivers etc.

How does it run? Have the same build. It seems like 60 FPS out of the question?
There are tons of graphic options but quite a few require game restarts. So, finding the best setting is really cumbersome.
But at medium settings at 2560x1080 I get around 40-60fps. Once better guides come out, 60fps should be doable.

Huh. I was reading some posts from other 970 users in a performance thread elsewhere and got the impression it could only narrowly do 30 at 1080p.

Na na na. They likely went medium-high or high with some settings. RDR2's settings work different than most other games. Low & medium on several settings are equivalent to high & ultra on other games.
60fps is defo possible. Abd I didn't even go with all low yet.
Mind you, I'm at ultrawide 1080p which already taxes performance on its own.
Regular 16:9 1080p should run considerabky better. Plus, there's an ingame resolution scaler if push comes to shove.

One thing though. Our 970's VRAM is a hurdle it seems for textures. Hope Rockstar patches that.

24 hours later and I still have the Rockstar Launcher Crash.

Support has went silent. I'm hesitant to refund but what other choices do I have?

Thanks for clarifying some more. Mildly hopeful now! Yeah, the VRAM is an issue in recent games. Sometimes I wonder if games would stream textures better if I could flash the card’s bios to never use the slow memory and instead cap it at the 3,5gb fast pool.

Yup. I've seen people complain that the game can "only" do 30 fps at 4K maxed out on a 2080 Ti. I mean no shit when you're using 8xMSAA lol
That said, Rockstar could have been more clear with what settings have major impact on performance. Like in Gear of War 4, there's a performance impact description next to every setting - minor, moderate and major. Which is very helpful.

I have a Ryzen, so that is concerning.

Also, there are a lot of us who upgrade to the biggest and baddest so that we can one-button press "MAX SETTINGS." I don't blame them for being upset because some of us pay a lot for that benefit.

As with PC gaming, yes, it's always better to optimize further, but I think what I have been reading is more than just turning off G-Physics hair in Witcher 3.

When I game, I'm like, "What will give me 60 fps at 2K" and then I buy that hardware.

My gaming monitor doesn't do 4K so it will be years before I do that.

I'm building PCs now since the 90s and I've never witnessed a time period where that kind of hardware existed. There was always something breaking contemporary hardware.

For the rest: Locked 1440p/60 at max settings are out of the question on my 2080Ti. I assume you won't have more luck. It's more in the 55-80 range and G-Sync helps a lot here, but you'll still need to reduce Water Physics to 50% or you'll drop down to the low 40s in some areas.

I mean you can judge on visual fidelity, effects used, etc. Morrowind had terrible character models that had tons of superfluous polygons. Modders went in and made much better models with less resources that could be used on a modded Xbox to improve graphics and performance.

RDR2 looks pretty great, but it's still pretty far behind some other games with RTX etc. Can't help but notice so many places were raytraced shadows would have really, really improved the visuals. Don't even need RTGI necessarily, but the shadows are poor. There's more overhead needed for the open world stuff though.

Personally I prefer the GI approach Exodus took with Ray Tracing over "Shadows only" like in Tomb Raider or CoD. I'm riding through Red Dead 2 and noticing how wrong some stuff looks. Still, it is quiet a beautiful game and I never expected it to have RTX features in the first place.

But that has nothing to do with the expectation of always being able to max out a new game, just because you own high end hardware. Nothing wrong with a game offering a couple settings that are meant for the future imo. As long as it scales across hardware (up and down) and PC performance is relatively equal to console performance. Fine with me.

But people are suffering from stutters, can't start the game, it keeps on crashing, there are freezes. The game is clearly not in a good shape currently.

The attention to detail, world building and characters is insane. Riding back to camp feels like coming back home. NPCs sit around, talk, laugh, sing, interact with each other.
Feels like the game world is existing without the player, instead of existing for him. I know, it's all smoke and mirrors. But very well done!
The game isn't rushing me, the game isn't giving me a list of points to check off. Every single mission is an unique event so far. It's a slow game that demands to be appreciated and doesn't care about giving you constant "adrenaline". No continuous loot stimulation, no quick level ups to force my brain to be exited about nothing. I like it.

And all technical issues aside: It looks very good on those super demanding ultra settings.

This game is something special, at least the SP portion. If you are waiting for the Steam release. You are in for a treat.

To be fair. A game maxing out 4 core CPUs isn't a sign of a bad port. It's just the usual sign of a demanding open world title.
The first time this happened to me was back in 2015 on my 3570k with Witcher 3 in Novigrad. It ran at 80-90% with regular drops below 60.
Switched to an 6700k that year and got 80+ fps in the city (both times with a gtx 980). Was quiet a revelation for me at the time. Same with Just Cause 3 that year: from 50 fps on the i5 to 90+ fps on the i7.

Witcher 3 i5
Witcher 3 i7

I understand the frustration, but 4 core CPUs struggle now for a long time in some games and especially some open world ones. It's not a new phenomenon or a sign of a bad port.

Constant crashes, people not being able to launch the game, stutters in DX12 or Vulkan, inconsistent problems. That's a different story though. It's a disastrous launch indeed.

It's going very well for me. Only 2-3 crashes in 13hrs of gameplay.
The world has so much going on, so many things to do and discover. You could easily play it without touching the story for dozens of hours. It's insane

from what i understood ... SP is pretty fine at this point , but MP is absolute mess
Ive had one crash in 45 hours of play. Havent really noticed any other major issues. Only played the Single player part.
Cool. I'll keep my eye out on a sale thing.

I think that like others, I'll be focusing on the Great Outdoors aspect of the game more than story missions like I did last time.
