October Quiz - Answers & Score

Are all the dead back in their graves? Very good! It's time to end this round and post the answers... this month I tested a different score model, instead of the "one-point-per-game" rule I made the score much more dependent on the percentage of correct answers. While the cake is still worth 25 points, you'll get a much smaller slice (less points) for a simple answer as opposed to a tough game that barely anyone recognized.

However, the result is that most people have significantly lower scores. :( After posting the german-language results yesterday the feedback has been generally negative, and I will probably return to the original scoring method. Anyway, check for your name in this table (link) to see how you classify compared to the other system, and let me know your thoughts in a comment?

On the bright side, we welcome a new community: Hello Waypoint forum (Waypoint - Forum)! :D

What were the answers and who made it into the top 10? Scroll down and see for yourself. :)

Thanks as always!

I like the new scoring system so if you wanted to do it one more time and maybe poll as a bonus question to keep it or drop it you'll at least have my one vote to keep it! And I saw I scored 3 less using the new scoring system but I think it's more interesting and makes hunting for the tougher answers feel worth it instead of just thinking, "Eh, just losing one point, I'll skip it."

I completely forgot Call of Duty games have a zombie mode. I never even tried looking into that for the answer.

You're getting real close to 100 participants. Hopefully next month you hit it! And I probably could have found Zombie Zombie if I kept looking but I moved on pretty quickly with that one since I'm bad at games of that era so I didn't have a lot to work with.

Oh, but I'm afraid you're the only positive voice. Everybody else doesn't like the new scoring! It gives people that know a lot an even bigger advantage, and those who only recognise some classics get even fewer points... and with the old system you could tell right away how many answers you got right. :) So I get what you are saying, but I am quite sure I want to go back to the regular scores.

I have the same amount of points than last time :disapproval-blob:
How can I believe in myself now :suicide-blob:
Nonsense, those 11 points was just the new scoring test. Your regular score would have been 14! :)

November Quiz - the damsel in distress

In the past years there were already two riddles with the theme "female protagonists", where you had to guess games where the player characters were women. This month's topic however has a lot less empowerment, as we are only dealing with women in need of saving - the damsel in distress. Be it the abducted princess, a disappeared girlfriend or some helpless girl locked in a cage. As usual the games cover a wide range from classics to obscure indie titles, but you are probably used to that by now. :)

I hope you enjoy this new round, and where is that title picture from? :p

Deadline is Saturday the 30th November, please participate via November 2019 - the Damsel in Distress

Here is the quiz, good luck!

November Quiz - Clues #1

Thank you Mario, but our princess is in another castle! Even though by now every game has been named correctly at least once, even the best participants so far are still several points short of a full score. Maybe some clues will help? ^_^

So far there are 32 people in total, and one from here.

Here we go:

1) The following pictures show the intro of the game: 1, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 20, 23 und 25. I'm not sure about number 15.
2) Game one and game three have the same protagonist.
3) Number 13 is a game by Namco.
4) Game 18 is the newest title in this round.
5) Game 24 was not released on consoles.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th November, please participate via November 2019 - the Damsel in Distress

November Quiz - Clues #2

Alright everyone, looks like you only have one week left to join this round, after that we'll determine who managed to save any princesses. ;) The Top 10 starts at 19 points, so there's still plenty potential for all of you to get a nice score.

So far we are 44 participants, one of which is from this community. Currently english and german forums are tied for user count, it's 22 each!

Here are the last clues:

1) The following games also got an Arcade release: 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 20.
2) Number 24 is a 2D Platformer.
3) Number 25 is a 3D Action RPG.
4) Title 21 plays a bit like God of War.
5) These games are exclusive to one platform: 1, 4, 16, 25.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th of November, please participate via November 2019 - the Damsel in Distress

Here the quiz link for the last time.

I did not do well compared to my usual outcome. I generally aim for around 20 and this time I'll have right around 15 right. I left a bunch blank because I just didn't feel like I could find a good answer. Of those three or four I definitely "know" but couldn't remember what they were. And a few really bug me because I just have zero idea but they look interesting. I'm solid on 14 of the first 15 but after that I just suddenly knew nothing.

Also, my answer to your bonus question might be confusing.

Ah man, I should have just put Eversion. I recognized the look of the game from that picture and immediately thought Eversion but I didn't realize it had someone to rescue. I only remember the first level of the game to some extent.

Wasn't sure about a few ones... But I'm kicking myself for Prince of Persia, that was my first thought and I left it blank :suicide-blob:
It was mean of me to pick such an obscure port. ;) But yes, you and Wibblewozzer need to start putting names in even if you're not 100% sure. :)

Do you keep track of all previous scores ? Is there a ranking somewhere ?
There's a big high score post for each year (usually in January), where all forums get ranked against each other, and also a global top 100 of users. There's 10 quizzes a year, so only one more for 2019!

Number 23 is Karateka? :oops:
I played the game on c64 and I'm only just now recognizing the image.
To be fair, Karateka is 35 years old. To not remember an ancient game from a fragment of a screenshot... don't be too hard on yourself. ;)

Luckily I've played Turok 2 just a few months ago, can't forget those kids!
Is any old Turok still worth playing in 2019? I have some memories of very foggy & frustrating platforming...

The modern remasters did a wonderful job with them. That said, the first one is still good, just a bit repetitive and full of design cliches from the N64 era (like lot of things to collect), but still worth playing. Turok 2 has some good things but it's full of bad platforming and confusing maze-like levels, the first one is much better, can't recommend it.

December Quiz - Wishmaster

I believe this time I'm overdoing it with the movie reference, does anyone even remember Wishmaster? No matter - last round you could pick your favourite genre+platform... and I used those entries to create this last quiz of the year! Thanks to some overlap in your most beloved genres there are now titles for over forty users in this round. Here is another twist though:

  • if you correctly guess the game from your genre/platform combo, you get a bonus point.
  • but if you DON'T get the game from your genre/platform combo, you get a penalty (-1 point)!

To not have this rule break the game, it only applies for scores between 5 and 20 points. :p

I wish (ha!) you good luck and happy holidays!

Deadline is Tuesday the 31st Dezember, participate via 12 / 2019 - careful what you wish for

Here is the last quiz of the year:

December Quiz - Clues #1

In the Wes Craven movie "Wishmaster" many wishes have unintended negative consequences - similar to how this round turned a harmless bonus question into an entire quiz. Would you have entered "Arcade Games via MAME" if you knew you'd have to guess such a game correctly in the following month or face a penalty? ;)

It is definitely a tough last round of the year, average score is below ten points... don't give up now! So far we are 22 people, and two from this community.

Maybe some clues will help? :) On we go!

1) The first column is just RPGs.
2) The second column contains only Platformers (or games with platforming elements).
3) The third one is all about racing games.
4) Columns four and five have no theme... and no platformers, RPGs or racers. :p
5) Game number four was released in 2019.

I wish you all good luck and happy holidays!

Deadline is Tuesday the 31st of December, participate via 12 / 2019 - careful what you wish for

December Quiz - Clues #2

Christmas is just around the corner - join the quiz now before holidays and family make you forget. :p There are some very personal presents from me as well, for I am giving you an extra amount of clues... it is a tough round with an average score still below ten.

So far we are 32 people, and two from this community.

Here are the new clues:

1) Game six is a RPG classic for PC.
2) Number 22 is a N64 platformer.
3) Title seven is a modern Metroidvania.
4) Screenshot nine shows an adventure that was also released on the Amiga.
5) On the 11 you can see a famous ps1 RPG.
6) Game 15 shows a 3rd person shooter, that scene plays in Dubai.
7) ...and the mysterious 25? On that picture you see a woman in a boat, the blue thing is a paddle. :p

Good luck & happy holidays!

Deadline is Tuesday the 31st of December, participate via 12 / 2019 - careful what you wish for

December Quiz - Clues #3

Only three days remain of this year... less than 100 hours left for you to finally join this round. So far we are close to 50 participants, and four from here.

Here are the very last clues:

1) Number 8 is not "Need for Speed".
2) Number 13 is not "Wipeout".
3) Number 17 is not "Dragon Quest", enemies are sucked in & spat out again.
4) Number 18 is not "Daytona".
5) Number 19 is not "Virtual On", but the console platform is correct.
6) Sigh... the 25 is an arcade only game from 1983.

Good luck and a happy new year. :)

Deadline is Tuesday the 31st of December, participate via 12 / 2019 - careful what you wish for

Well, I'll just have to accept my score of 17/25. At least I'm pretty certain everything I entered was correct. There's a couple I know I've seen or could get if I just kept Googling but I spent a lot of time searching for some of these and I'm just going to submit it. But I'm really looking forward to seeing the answers.

December Quiz - Answers & Score

The year is over, once again you all have solved every video game riddle posted here. For last month this includes every possible outcome, from 1 to 25 points, and exactly ONE person figured out every single game... who might this be? ^_^

There was something special about the december quiz, as it was built from the genres you named as your favourites in the previous round. How did this turn out? Next to every game in the answers below is a "favourite genre of" entry, which specifies which users picked this genre. Behind every username is a symbol, which means one of the following:

(0) this user had above 20 or below 5 points, no points were applied.

HIGH SCORES 2019

The year is over, and I'd like to announce some overall winners (and winning forums) from all the contestants and points of 2019. The german language forums already got their high scores earlier this week, so now it's about time for the english communities.

As this quiz is a competition among several online forums (19 in total!), I'd like to explain how you score points for your forum.

SCORE HIGH
If you make it to the top 10 in any of the quizzes, you gather between one and five points for your forum.

ENDURANCE
Frequent participation also gets you (between one and four) points for your forum, that's how you can contribute even without lots of nerd knowledge. ;)

Details on points and medals: image link

Alright, this is how the participating forums have made it through the year:

4py = 4Players Forum
dgo = Dialogoption Forum
eab = English Amiga Board
gpo = Gamepro Forum
gms = Gamestar Forum
guf = Gaming Universe Forum
hcg = hardcore gaming 101
m!g = M!Games Forum
mmx = Multimediaxis Forum
ntl = NintendoLife Forum
mnc = old maniac Forum
mtc = MetaCouncil Forum
pcx = PCX Forum
pop = PowerPlay Forum
rpg = RPG Maker Forum
rta = ResetEra Forum
rtc = Retro Canteen Forum
vgz = Videogameszone Forum
way = Waypoint Forum

A round of applause, 5th place for the MetaCouncil community!

That's a great placement for your first year in the quiz, especially since you only joined for the second riddle. Will you be able to keep this place in 2020? ;)

There were three new forums in 2019: The MetaCouncil, the RPG Makers and the Waypoint community all joined the competition - welcome! :) However Waypoint is already out again, the Mods didn't want the quiz there.

This is the ranking from 2018, if you feel like comparing: image link

This abstract community score aside, who actually made the points?

The following users made it into the top 10s and thus collected points:

gold medals
2x - 10 points - blindrythm
1x - 05 points - Milena

iron medals
Recrees, blindrhythm and Milena all scored well and got 2 points each.

wood medals
the following users managed to get into the lower end of the top 10 and won one point for the MetaCouncil: Gevin, Gizmo. Ruvon

The second category is endurance... this is how your forum did:

3 points - Wibblewozzer
1 points - TubaZef

And before I forget, here the winner of the last survey:

You like your damsels in distress, I see. ;) Maybe there'll be a sequel in 2020!

Thanks to all for participating - really, if there weren't hundreds of people playing, I would have stopped by now. So thanks for making this fun for me too. :)

* The next season starts in March! *

Thanks again for all the effort you put into this. I always look forward to it each month (even if I always wait until the last moments most months to quickly send in my answers).

Are you expecting to be back March with the first quiz of the year?

And not sure how you're tracking things but I guess it didn't match me up from moving from one forum to this one? Back in March 2019 I was on Resetera (which is also when I suggested you come here) and got first place. Looks like you gave those points to Era. That's a shame since I stopped posting there as soon as I got you to come here! Oh well, for 2020 all my scores should be recorded here.

I am very happy to hear that. :)

Yep, that's the idea! I started to put it together this week. The theme starts with a "W". :cool:

So the way I track points... it's a bit difficult to adjust for any mid-year forum switcheroo (you are kinda binary, either forum A or B), but I think it worked out with you, you were the third user to switch a forum. Your score of 181 takes the single ResetEra quiz into account, and you are right, your first place got attributed to ResetEra - but why should it not, MetaCouncil wasn't even participating when you won that first position. :unsure:

If you don't jump to a different community, sure! :)

March Quiz - a walk in the park

A new quiz year is starting! To make sure you have time to get back into the right mindset, the first round is a very relaxed one. 25 titles without wild shooting around, and no complicated platforming either. Instead you can take your time, get coffee without pausing the game and explore the world while solving the occasional riddle. If this sounds a bit like walking simulators, well yeah, you'll find some of these in this round. ;)

Your favourites (SoundFX, Retro Pixel, MS DOS classics...) are already in preparation - I hope it'll again be a great quiz year. Lots of fun and good luck to all of you!

Deadline is Tuesday 31st of March, participate via March Quiz - a walk in the park

Here is the quiz:

Somehow I've missed this so far but I think I'll try to get in this year.
welcome on board! :) I didn't realise it while creating this round, but the march quiz is not retro at all... I guess walking simulators are quite a new genre.

So far there's 40 people who have participated, and three from the Metacouncil.

March Quiz - clues #1

We are now at the halfway point of our walk in the park, and with over fifty participants (six from here) it appears you are enjoying this round. It might also be the difficulty, which apparently is a bit on the lower side for the first quiz of the year... you'll need more than 20 correct answers to get a top 10 position.

Some clues I will still give you - good luck and maybe they'll help you recognise more. :)

1) Number 21 and 25 show browser games.
2) Two years ago I took screenshot 23 myself on my Nintendo Switch.
3) Title #7 is the oldest of this round by far - a classic from the 1990s.
4) The games 3 and 19 are younger and were released in the 2000s.
5) But to my great surprise when I looked it up - ALL other games are from the past decade!

Deadline is Tuesday 31st of March, participate via March Quiz - a walk in the park

Alright, pretty confident on most. I have at least one guess I might put in for another. Otherwise not too certain on a couple and I may not end up getting them.

March Quiz - a walk in the park - Clues #2

Our walk is almost over, you only have this weekend left! In total there are seventyeight people now, and seven from this community. This is actually not okay, haven't you heard we're supposed to avoid big groups now. ;)

Here are the last clues, afterwards go get those answers. :p

1) Game six is not "the long dark".
2) But of course, title 13 is "Tetris". What else! :)
3) However game 14 is not "Inside".
4) Number 16 is not "Alan Wake".
5) And at last, Game 23 is not "Breath of the Wild".

Deadline is Tuesday 31st of March, participate via March Quiz - a walk in the park

The hints didn't help this time, as I had the answers without the hints, but it did remind me to go back and see about figuring out a couple more. I won't get a perfect month as there's one I didn't submit an answer for (and very curious what it could be after I tried to research it), but I did get a couple more today that I'm feeling pretty okay towards. Can't wait to see the answers!

Also, that screenshot for #16 is really tough. I got it when I sent in answers early on but at a glance it doesn't look anything like what I remember/thought it should.
