An Update on Next-Gen: PlayStation 5 Launches Holiday 2020

Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring. Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for Holiday 2020.

These updates may not be a huge surprise, but we wanted to confirm them for our PlayStation fans, as we start to reveal additional details about our vision for the next generation. WIRED magazine covered these updates and more in a story that posted this morning.

The “more” refers to something I’m quite excited about – a preview of the new controller that will ship with PlayStation 5. One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion.

To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5’s new controller. First, we’re adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.

The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.

While there’s much more to share about PlayStation 5 in the year ahead, we have plenty of blockbuster experiences coming your way on PS4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. I was going to post this in my console gaming OT thread but I'll react here as well.

Hardware sounds great. Ray tracing was not something that I expected and its sounds like the DS5 will be second to none.

I'm personally more interested in the software, as in how BC is implemented and how many games will take advantage of modular installs.

I'm not opposed to experimental control methods, but I think haptic features in controllers tend to be a massive battery drain that provides dubious value. Unless you're doing VR or something it tends to be kinda gimmicky. They use examples like pulling a trigger to simulate a bowstring. That's... that's not how bow strings work. And you're gonna blow a LOT of battery power making the triggers more difficult to pull. Not to mention trigger pull is a very delicate for controllers. There's a risk of devs filling their games with gimmicky minigame stuff where you have to pull the trigger extra hard to land the fish in Far Cry 6 or something. Choking enemies out? Gotta squeeze the trigger extra hard. That risks getting old super fast.

Remember when HD rumble was supposed to be killer feature for the Nintendo Switch? Except the new Switch doesn't have it so literally nobody is going to use it anymore? That's the tangible risk with these kind of features.

Not to mention Sony have a history of weird controller gimmicks that ended badly. Cue that remark from David Doak about the Vita and, to paraphrase, "that stupid thing where you waggle your fingers on the back" that Sony told them they had to include in any potential TimeSplitters remaster for Vita.

Might get it at launch since I skipped this gen entirely, hopefully BC is day 1 and Sony will have some kind of gamepass thing planned.

I'll be picking up a PS5 to play Sony games, because I've always enjoyed them, and to clean up some PS4 games that I didn't manage to get to before I had to sell it, but I'll be doing the majority of my gaming on PC this gen.

I guess they're either phasing out PSVR or externalizing controllers for it?
My guess is that the DS5 that ships with consoles will not have one since most people just complained about it, and you'll either need to get a PSVR-enabled controller, or it's using some other tracking system for regular gamepad play.

It could be using similar tracking to Oculus Touch, which is invisible to the eye but the right camera can pick it up.

PSVR 2 will probably have inside out tracking, but there will also likely be a camera setup for PSVR1 that is compatible with the new controllers.

I just hope while they're at it we get PS Move Ver. 2 that is closer to Oculus Touch than the horribly outdated PS Move controllers.

I hope the PS5 controller have a better battery compared to DS4. That was annoying to deal with honestly.

Hopefully they let you install classics to external 2.5in (or even internal) hard drives so it doesn't take up the very expensive and probably very limited SSD on the system.

There's also talk of a PS5 proprietary memory card format - I hope we're not seeing Vita storage mk.2 here.

Had no time to watch the presentation yet.
I bought a PS4 on day one, just because I enjoyed Sony exclusives before so much.
And the same is true with PS4, but I might wait a year this time around. Just to check out how Sony is going to handle their exclusives now.

Raw specs wise: No surprises mostly.
I'm curious about the RT performance though.

I was just thinking, even if the PS5 launches $100 cheaper, the Series X comes out about even if you're jumping in from the XBO. You can just sell your old XBO without a problem, because it's got full back compat. That's your $100 difference there. Comes out about the same, and you've got the more "powerful" box. Maybe Xbox can somehow leverage this with a trade-in deal or something with partnered retailers. Meanwhile, you'll probably want to hold on to a PS4 until your full library is available on PS5. Seems like Microsoft has this in the bag if they can get the messaging right.

The fast SSD speed on PS5 is impressive, no doubt. But I don't see any games other than first-party using this to its full potential, whereby presumably it changes the way the game is designed or something.

PS5 will be more successful than XSX because of exclusives (XSX won't even have it's own exclusives in it's first year) and brand recognition alone in every country that is not the US, plus depending on the price if they're the same or lower will determine who's gonna stay winning. I'm surprised people are thinking only 100 games will be playable at launch when neither Cerny nor the blog post implied that. All they mentioned was testing 100 games and see if they can take advantage of the PS5 architecture, which they did, and they said they will test every game so that almost all of PS4 library is ready for launch. No way did they imply it's gonna be partial BC or anything of the sort.

If that’s the case, I don’t really understand the BC panic elsewhere on the web. Is it just the boost thing then? As for the other point, wasn’t the 360 also pretty popular in Europe? I think most people who can recognize a PlayStation also are aware of the Xbox. Exclusivity... I don’t know. I think for a lot of people, those Xbox games that also come to PC are as good as exclusive. The person who has a gaming PC and budgets for a console on top of that is an enthusiast, not mass market. Plus, a lot of people will just buy FIFA and the FotM shooter.

PS4 BC seems fine, and it looks like we'll have support for most games by time launch comes around, but I think Sony not talking about PS1-PS3 is a big mistake. Even if the PS3 BC library is still limited, they really should be talking about getting a collection of games from that system working on PS5. And they really have no excuse for PS1 and PS2 games, as they could almost certainly have widespread support for those libraries on PS5 nowadays.

I feel like there's a part of Sony that wants games played on PS5 to adhere to certain standards, like being widescreen and having trophies. Their botched PS2 classics range on PS4 is indicative of that. The reality is most people don't care about that shit - they just want to pop their disc in or download the game and play as close to a 1:1 version of their game as it was back in the day.

I still think console manufacturers are reluctant to fully accept as standard what has been reality on PC for many years now: players will always have an absolutely massive amount of games to choose from to play, and having a shiny new box alone won't make the vast majority of them consider getting games for it that they otherwise wouldn't be interested in. Unlike most previous console launches, where the availability of the new hardware itself provided an impetus for unusually healthy sales of a number of launch games -- which were, let's admit it, often quite under-cooked (with exceptions of course).

When I watched Cerny's presentation, I thought it was pretty clear he talked about the boosted frequencies thing, like he said the GPU was backward compatible and can run PS4 legacy modes, the issue was PS5's native mode where some games may have specific code that won't run as properly, that's why he said testing was needed. 360 was popular everywhere since it was released first and was waaaaayyyyy cheaper than the PS3's launch, but with the way things are now, I don't think that scenario will happen again. The issue is that the games are gonna be cross-gen, meaning Xbox One will also have a version so maybe people won't upgrade to an XSX until later since they have that option and honestly, Xbox exclusives from the AAA side haven't done that well except Forza, Halo and Sea of Thieves, I think? It all depends on the pricing and exclusives for people to get their consoles, then people will get their yearly COD and FIFA games.

Ah, I didn't actually watch the entire thing. Maybe the first 15 minutes, saw EG posted the spec sheet and just followed the talk about the presentation afterward.

I'm excited for next gen games using these CPU gains and SSDs as well. PS5's SSD in particular seems like it could lead to some amazing stuff, I just don't know how much it'll affect multiplatform development. It's not that Xbox's SSD is bad, it's just PS5's is a solid leap ahead of that and when you're designing a multiplat game and you find out PS5's drive can lead to interesting changes, what do you do? Do you implement those and just try your best with Xbox? Going by what devs have been talking about it doesn't seem as easy as lowering resolution or fps because the cpu/gpu isn't as strong, it seems like we're dealing with how games (especially open world ones) are designed at their core. That's not something that you can just toggle like resolution.

Regarding BC they completely dropped the ball once again, there's no way to sugarcoat it. Only 100 games and it's sorted by playtime? Does that mean we're going to get 8 Fifas, 8 CODs, 5 Maddens and other GaaS games? No ps1-3 support at all? Sony just doesn't give AF about BC and it shows with Jim Ryan at the helm. It really puts a damper on what was a solid system reveal.

It's faster than any SSD on the market right now by quite a bit, though Cerny said by year's end he expects new PCIE 4 drives that can theoretically outperform PS5's. But they'll be using that kind of drive as the base of development. Any SSD will help devs a ton, but starting with one that insanely fast can wildly change how games are made. I saw one dev say it could even lead to less crunch because so much time near the end is spent on memory micromanagement and level streaming and that won't be a thing they have to worry about anymore.

Nvme SSDs as standard is great news. My next platform will surely be based around that.
For now, my regular SSDs will have to do.

I hope Intel will wake up within this millenium. I'm very tempted to upgrade from my 8700K to something like a 4700X this fall.

If the lightbar on the front can change to reddish/pinkish, then you essentially have a Spider-Gwen controller.

I like it a lot from an aesthetic perspective. It's definitely bold in its design and hints at a PS5 design that, if similar, will definitely be striking.

At launch, we will offer two options: a PlayStation®5 console with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a PlayStation®5 Digital Edition without a disc drive. The PS5 gameplay experience will be the same, so the choice is all yours. While there are some slight differences in the look of each model, for the overall design, we wanted to deliver a console that’s bold, stunning, and unlike any previous generation of PlayStation.

I definitely like the look of the system because it's not boring. I was really worried it'd look like a PS4 slim or whatever.

Systems should look progressively more surreal and futuristic even if idiosyncratic with contemporary styles.

I want PlayStation 12 to be the form factor of a chandelier. Like this 50-qbit quantum computer by IBM.
