I'm taking my sweet time because I want the problems fixed.
The game isn't grasping me that much, which is completely unexpected.

I don't find the open world that great and the combat didnt click with me. Which is sad because the enemies and their design is one of the best I've ever seen.

Another patch, and it still did nothing to me. Still crashes.
Did you ever end up trying to reduce your GPU clock to check if it still happens? Because if Zotac sold you a GPU that isn't 100% stable at manufacturer OC (which is not unprecedented) then it's doubtful that patches will do much about it.

I haven't looked into it. I just did earlier and it seems simple enough as they have their own software for customizing the clocks.

I guess I'll have to try it later.

Been having a good time with this two hours in. I'm playing at 1080p on an RTX 2070 Super, and I haven't encountered any game or immersion-breaking issues. No stutter, poor FPS or visual glitches. It's running well.

For reference, here's my specs:
Intel Core i7 6700K
RTX 2070 Super
32gb 3200mhz DDR4
Gen 3 NVMe for the game install drive

I think I'm probably one of the lucky ones. But I've heard this game is RAM hungry. I saw someone say useage goes up to 24gb, so maybe I am just feeding this poorly-optimised game well?

Yeah, maybe there's a memory leak or something. It crashes after a 1-2 hours for me, seemingly less if I dont fast travel too much, but that might be just my impression.
Anyway, the crashes surely aren't keeping me from playing (and the frequent autosaving and quicksaving keep me from losing too much progress). 50 hours in I'm still loving this game a lot. :)

Took me fifty hours to get my interest actually to perk up.

It's part of the main quest but a bit way towards the end. I finished all the side quests and I will be skipping most of all the errands.

Going to do the dlc before I hit the end as I don't really think I remotely will touch NG+

I also dont think I'll do NG+ but maybe someday... I intend to do everything I can, however. Already did most side activities and a large chunk of the main quest, now doing side quests and the expansion. Will finish the main quest last, in my experience my interest in a game drops after I'm done with the main story.

Yikes!

The main quest was the driving force behind me finishing the game. The sidequests felt throw-away. (on PS4)

My feelings exactly
When the Main Quest started ramping up and the lore drops started dropping, I got interested.
This feels like a solid 7/10 in a beautiful Open World.

The Combat has potential but does not carry its weight.

Our team is continuing to investigate open issues and we will continue to update you when more news is available.

As always, thank you for your feedback and support across our channels. Below you can find the Known Issues as well as the patch notes for update 1.03!

–Guerrilla

Known Issues
  • Some players are experiencing an out of memory error during the game optimization process.
  • Some players are experiencing graphical settings issues, such as Anisotropic Filtering or HDR not working correctly.
  • Some players are experiencing performance issues on specific GPUs or hardware combinations.
  • We're aware of and continue to investigate issues that are not yet solved on both the player-compiled lists by [UWSL]u/EvilMonkeySlayer[/UWSL] and [UWSL]u/Rampage572[/UWSL] – thank you!

Patch Notes
Crash Fixes

  • Fixed a GPU resource leak which could build up over time and cause instability.
  • Fixed a GPU hang that caused a crash that could occur when Asynchronous Compute was used.
  • Fixed a crash when AI would try to aim at an invalid position.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when sound obstruction was calculated in highly detailed areas.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur when moving the game to a monitor with different DPI settings while in the menu.
  • Fixed an issue where some players would crash on startup due to incorrect memory allocation.
  • Fixed a GPU hang that would occur when the window was resized to a very small size.

Progression Issues
  • Fixed a progression issue where some players would remain a child and not transition to adult Aloy.

Functionality Issues
  • Fixed an issue where snow deformation was not working correctly in the Frozen Wilds area.
  • Fixed an issue where the Concentration skill could stop working.

Other Improvements
  • 4K Scaling – Fixed an issue where the game wouldn’t render at 4K properly on boot.
  • Frame Rate Limiter – Improved Frame Rate Limiter functionality to be more accurate.
  • Localization – Localized specific error messages.
  • Windows Version Check - The game checks if Windows 10 Build 1809 or above is used (lower versions cause instability in DirectX 12).
  • Minimum Spec Warning – Improved minimum spec warning message and options.
  • Saving Issue Warning – Clarified text that is displayed when you do not have access to your My document folder or enough disk space.
  • Player Profile Validation – The player profile is now validated and corrupt profiles (caused by manual editing or tweak tools) rejected.

One thing is for sure, Guerrilla is fixing HZD at a regular basis of patches release that amazes me, really good communication and effective patches for most, we can be sure that if a Sony game releases in a poor state on PC at the very least they will fix it, not like some other companies (I'm looking at you, S-E)

Now that sounds like the problem I keep having... will see if this fixed my semi-regular crashing.

Meanwhile, I am done with the Frozen Wilds and have only a handful of main story missions left. Already did all the side quests, collectibles, errands, etc etc. I might go hunting all the remaining data points I missed before I wrap up the story. Despite the crashing, I love this game and dont want it to end, even after 70 hours or so.
Still not sure if I would want to do NG+ on the hardest difficulty to snatch 100% of the achievements (100% achievements is something I very rarely do). Normal difficulty is plenty challenging enough for me already. If it doesnt become frustrating, I might consider it ;)

I understand your desire to be positive, I often share it but this time I wouldn't really celebrate too eagerly the bare minimum... It's a given that of course they should fix this, and them not doing that would be unacceptable :).

Another patch like this and the game can probably be recommended to anyone with a powerful pc. While i agree that this is the minimum and something i fully expected, it's still good to see happen. It really does make for a brighter future with so many ports from Sony rumored to come to pc.

Any guesses if they can do one better and improve performance?

I disabled it when i was experimenting with the game at launch and quickly enabled it again because the game got worse so can confirm this as well.

The patch brought some stability for me, only one more crash yesterday (albeit during the last sequence of quests, so, a bit annoying). Took me 75 hours to finish it, and I managed to get all but three achievements (those are: New Game +, NG+ on hardest difficulty and getting all achievements).
I decided not to do bother with the datapoints I missed, nor doing NG+ / hardest difficulty. After trying NG+ ultrahard for half an hour and encountering normal enemies that were as hard as end-game enemies were during my normal playthrough, I figured it wasn't for me. I guess it's cool for those that like the challenge. I thought normal difficulty was just perfectly balanced for me.

Anyway, as I said a few times, I really loved this game and I'm glad I got to play it on PC with what a - for me - a good port. Mouse controls, FOV options and switching off motion blur really makes a huge difference in play comfort for me (as opposed to playing the console version via PSNow earlier this year).

But yeah, gorgeous game, a blast to play, satisfying combat, intriguing world and story/lore... looking forward to the next one (which I hope will to come to PC eventually...).

Thanks for the tip, but I've done that at launch and it didn't help. I think the crashes, which occurred probably every 1-2 hours or so, were due to this bug that was fixed with 1.03:

Fixed a GPU resource leak which could build up over time and cause instability.
And as I mentioned, this patch did increase stability indeed.I played several hours yesterday before I had a crash.
But I've finished the game now anyway. :)

Just bashing myself a bit, did some testing with the new patch and both avg fps and lows improved by ~5fps, not much but feels like just enough to make mouse+keyboard viable on my 1070, doesn't really dip below 50fps at all anymore.

A friend told me that they patched the game again and he's not getting crashes like used to.

What about the hitching? That's the part that would really annoy me.

I'm about 10 hours in, maybe a bit more, and I'm still enjoying the game. It hasn't quite gripped me, but I'm not at a point where I'm going to write it off and put it down.

There's a lot of compelling systems that don't always come together, and I think if it gets a bit much I'd be ready to drop the game. I just hope I get more story soon, though not having more main story is partially my fault as I sometimes let myself get bogged down in all available side quests before I move on to the next story mission which has the effect of me getting bored. Horizon isn't the first game this has happened to me on, and won't be the last.

Patch 1.04 is out

Crash Fixes

  • Fixed a crash that could occur when users would create a new game and their save game slots were full.
  • Fixed a startup crash related to temp folder.
  • Fixed an AI crash that could occur during combat.
  • Fixed an AI crash in the EventMessageHandler.
  • Fixed a crash related to WorldData sampling (the callstack would end in WorldMapData::SampleAtPixel).
  • Fixed a crash when users would instantly back out when changing sliders in the Settings menu.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur when having the "Greetings" option open in photo mode and then exiting.
  • Potential fix for memory corruption in AI routines which could lead to crashes.
  • Potential fix for a GPU hang caused by a threading issue.
  • Fixed a mismatch that would occur on Shader Model 6.0 and 6.1 hardware which could lead to a crash.

Performance Improvements

  • General improvement to CPU performance (depending on CPU/GPU speeds, this can result in a 1-10% performance improvement).
  • Improved performance of camera cuts in cinematics and conversations.

Other improvements

  • HDR - Fixed colour banding issues in HDR mode.
  • Mouse Controls - Fixed an issue where mouse sensitivity was incorrect when framerate wasn't constant.
  • Aiming - Fixed an issue where Aloy was unable to shoot while being able to do a critical attack near a machine.
  • Cutscenes - Fixed an issue where geometry and textures would pop in after camera cuts.
  • Adaptive Performance - Fixed an issue where lighting glitches would occur when turning on Adaptive Performance.
  • Volumetrics - Fixed an issue which could cause blinking artifacts in volumetric effects, like fog.
  • Visibility - Fixed an issue which could sometimes cause geometry to briefly disappear after streaming.
They are not lying about the performance improvements.
I'm even getting 15%+.
Overclocking or not, that's a lot of extra fps.

Other improvements
  • Allow players to still boot the game even if the version of windows used is detected to be too low to run the game at a stable condition.
  • Added an option to turn off controller vibration/rumble.
  • Fixed an issue in the storing of the ‘permission to track data’ attribute of the player profile (subsequently re-asking for said permission).
  • Fixed an issue where the opening cutscene music would not play if the player quits out and immediately begins a new game.
  • Fixed an issue where inverting mouse controls also affected dialog tree choice input.

Nice, out of everything wrong with the port, the hair was my biggest grievance. As soon as I saw that problem I couldn't not notice it, and trying to play at 30fps after playing at 60fps was not going to cut it.

Really happy with the steady stream of patches. Hopefully Sony's future PC endeavors will launch in a better state.
Game runs pretty well for me now. It hitches a lot less than it used to. 60fps mostly solid at 1440p with a 8700k (non OC) + 2070 factory overclocked.

This game running natively on Nvidia hardware is still incredible.

Good that it's finally "fixed". Took them a while.

Hopefully Virtuos are not handling the PC version of God of War......
So that was how many months after release? And I wonder how performance looks like on a midrange machine now.

it ran pretty well* for me at 1440p (i7-8700, 1070Ti, 16GB RAM + a Samsung SSD 960 EVO, thats one of those NVM ones), so it might run well for your similiar machine.

* it DID crash often before all the patches, but that seems fixed now
