It is probably the only weakness of Series S aside of raw power. I think those proprietary external SSD for series X should work on S as well.

If it worked with my existing external HDD, different story all together. It doesn't though.
Depending on the PS5 digital price.... could be serious issues value wise if your looking for 1tb or more of digital game space.
But XBSX-S has gamepass and PC crossplay, ,so the value could be there.
I agree. Cost down the road will be relatively bigger. But the entry price point is probably attractive to casuals and people who only play a few games and, like you said, mainly use it as a game pass machine.
i think they've said you can use an external hdd for storage of next gen games but you'll need to do some swapping on to the ssd to get the new games to play. back compat games will play off the external hdd tho i believe?
also in theory the smart delivery system will make game downloads smaller as the system won't need 4k assets. i believe that's how it works now on the x1 and x1s.

looking at the s again, it's too bad they didn't put in a disc drive cause that would make it the ultimate media center. 4k streaming apps, uhd movies, and the ability to stream/cast media to the movies & tv app if it works like the current xbox.
Damn i think I will get in December. I will save up on canned food and put aside alittle and get it. 299€ should be manageable. That way at least I can play game pass games while I save for the gaming pc.

Three things
1. Less powerful overall, unknown if serve to make the XS a second or third "citizen" (in technical respects) device by 2023 or it sells well enough to make it the lowest common denominator and features like ray tracing become less common than they might have on consoles.
2. Lack of an optical drive makes it a less attractive position for true all in one media center/gaming "box" replacement. Of course, if you want that you spend the extra $$
3. Size of SSD
Overall, these are 'enthusiast' concerns and I can't see them affecting sales outside of the core 20%.
With gamepass, it has my attention and with my frugal ways, it has my focus as of right now.
When it comes to the average Joe who owns a console, those things don't really matter. I can't prove anything on power, but with the fact that digital share is still rising with no sign of slowing down, I don't think people care that much about optical drive. Do you know the attach rate of consoles? Even the PS4 only has less than 10 games per console. Most people don't actually hoard games, they only play a few games for the entire generation of console. Storage space wouldn't matter for these people.
Still wonder what a smaller price means for their performance in Europe saleswise. Even when the PS3 was at its most expensive I know more people opting for Playstation because.

I agree. I could consider myself an enthusiast as far as the time spent playing and my collection but I'm not in 'enthusiast hardware' group for sure.
Huge get for the X-S is that the CPU is the same as the XX. I know from experience that you can usually turn down graphics settings/resolution but there is no getting around lack of CPU grunt/system memory space.
(would an overclocked xbox x be a 'Xtreme Xbox X' something I could say is an 'XXX' console??)
I believe they said they are using an up-scaling process to bring the 1440P to 4k. I'm sure other people will just keep their 1080p displays. I'll be holding on to my 1080p displays for at least the next three years myself.
so $35 a month for 24 months is $840. game pass ultimate is $15 a month for 24 months, that's $360. that would make the console $480....so you actually save $20 by going with the all access plan? interesting.
using that same math for the series s: $25 a month f0r 24 months is $600. game pass ultimate is still $360. so that would make the series s $240, $60 savings over buying outright!

Do you return the console after 24 months?? Or does the cost of the console get removed from the sub or is the 'loan' over and you now own the console and need to re sub to xbl and GP?
after 24 months the console is yours, but you will need to resub to xbl or game pass on your own if you want to keep using those services. you could also pay off the loan earlier if you want but once it is paid you owe them nothing and aren't required to continue subscribing.

Not sure about how many Xboxs will he, kept to the side, by M$ for this program. Supplies will be tight, especially on the X-S, the rest of this year.
M$ is putting the $$ in Service for sure, and I'm liking it. Ownership of anything but your thoughts is essentially dead as in practice so I embrace the service future.

If anywhere near me has a decent trade in deal for the series X I might get one. I'm mostly planning to upgrade PC this year and I've been saving for that. I'll see what money I have left.

For what it's worth, Microsoft are saying the Series S is scalable to Series X where possible, and matching it where it isn't.

i did find this chart comparing the various stats of current and next gen xbox specs
might need someone with more tech knowledge breakdown the gpu differences for next vs current gen but it does seem that the xss can outperform the xbox one at the resolutions it runs at. would the xss gpu be something like an 5500xt?

Xbox will probably my console of choice next gen. We got hit with a tax recently on PlayStation digital service, which in top of that, the prices are in USD. Which, makes everything way too fucking expensive. So yeah, no.

the cpu is certainly better in the ss, one x does have 1 gb more game usable ram (assuming that 2gb in ss is for os) but slower storage by a lot. i don't know enough about the gpu tech to know what the story is between rdna2 and the old tech to judge there but i don't imagine it's worse than something from 2017. polaris is rx500 gpu and rdna2 would be like 5500/5600? would need someone with more knowlege on gpu tech to say though.
it doesn't really seem like a 1 to 1 "this is better" for the one x to me, especially with ss being able to do 120fps.
either way i'm not sure who would upgrade from the one x to ss and it won't much matter considering the cross gen games are more limited than ms seemed to imply at first.

I'll go with Xbox Series S through Xbox All Access and a Nintendo Switch (Pro) for my next gen consoles.
The Series S would have been a fantastic BC - game pass device if it also had disc drive as there are still some X360 games like the Forza Motorsport games that did not receive BC treatment on Xbox One/X.
However Im not interested in a Series X as I just play MS games on PC, so until further notice I will just keep using my One X for BC with my 360 games and game pass console exclusive games (like Kingdom Hearts, it's on console game pass, but not on PC at all).
