|OT| The PC Hardware Thread -- Buy/Upgrade/Ask/Answer

I wish Corsair would release a case-only Corsair One. I know their excuse is the Corsair One uses a proprietary GPU cooler, but at this point I'd be willing to mess about with changing the cooler on my graphics card to get an amazing form factor like that.

Alas, I settled with the Fractal Design Meshify C. It's not Micro-ATX, but it's a damn small ATX case.

has there been any mention of a release time for the zen 3 next week like for the gpus (like 6am pst) ?

or are these going to be more readily available unlike the gpus

AMD have given the option to be notified by email when they're going live. If they're even half as competent as NVIDIA, they will email you on the day telling you what time sales go live, which is usually at least a few hours in advance.

But I'm hoping they have ample supply of CPUs as I want to buy one. I've already got everything else I need to put together a new system, and it's going to be an agonising wait if I can't get a 5800X on release day.

That's actually a good idea.

Ryzen 5000 will be out, AMD RX 6000 series will be out, Ampere could have new models with more VRAM, new Intel CPUs with PCI Gen 4.0 could be out.
Plenty of choices and hopefully no availability problems.

Had someone on discord yesterday saying there was a leak of AMD's new gpus cards rt performance, apparently its 25% slower than Ampere

could be total bs, didn't check it

As expected I can't seem to be able to find any MSI or EVGA RTX 3070 in stock, anywhere.

Great....My 2070 does fine at 1440p but I could use more performance especially in ray-traced games.

Do we have a Windows 10/software OT or something? I need help.

My problem is that the last two Windows 10 updates (I'm on the absolute latest now, the very last said it was preview of something I believe, but it was the one before that first caused this) seem to have fucked with permissions or something. Very few, rare and seemingly mostly older games and programs that worked fine before now pop a dialogue to say they can't open this or that file when running them, like some game config or save file for example.

At first I thought they can't edit them and might be set as read only somehow because when right clicking and selecting properties they have that black square thing, not a check mark, but I guess that means some file somewhere is read only not all of it (right?). The files in question don't have that, they're blank, no check mark on that read only setting (or can a folder/drive be read only and yet the files within not show that?). But it wasn't that, they can't read them.

I went and changed the permissions of the whole drives to make sure everything has "full control" and that didn't fix it either. The only thing so far that gets them to run properly is to click to run the game or app as administrator which brings up an UAC confirmation dialogue every time so is not ideal (but I can deal with it).

Why do I have to do this when I'm already on an administrator account and the only account that is on this PC since ever at that anyway (actually since Windows 7 since this is an upgrade path)? Just give everything I run admin control by default. Any tips on what I might be doing wrong that could cause this?

Random guess: Perhaps something changed with the ransomware folder protection of Windows?

Yeah that's what I figured, my current 8600k + 1070 combo will be more than fine till then as I'm at 1080p 144hz and my PS5 will be fun to play with till then too :P

Oh well. I'll just run those games as admin, it's ok. It just sucks to not know why it started doing that bs.

i can not for the life me decide on a MB for my build. i have basically everything else decided but just cant figure it out. i know i want an x570 and seem to be leaning towards asus but cant figure out which one

Thankfully there's the command that applies it to the folder, sub folder and files so I didn't have to do it too many times manually.

Edit: Lol, after reboot it applies the permissions to how they were before the fix... What the hell :(

Why do they change back? Log out/log in doesn't cause that, shut down/restart does. Googling comes up with an OneDrive bug, I don't use it at all though.

Edit: Ok finally fixed. I had changed the default install folder, I thought that only applied to Windows Store apps (after all, programs with setup files always ask and still have C:\ as default iirc) as the default install location. I changed it back to C:\ from the windows settings > system > storage thingie, re-did the whole process and after another reboot it seems to retain the proper permissions. Just weird that it only did this the last month or whenever, I've changed that setting there since at least last year (it shows modified date) to reinstall Phantom Dust free from the Windows Store. Dang, stupid shit.

Anyway, got my 2080ti and holy christ

MHW with dlss at 4k, maxed out running at 60 - 75 fps without problems

FF XIV @ 4k with gshade on top, 80 fps without problems (maxed out)

re 2 runs like a dream, same for Control in rtx (4k with dlss @720p is really solid, same for 1080p without)

And hum I mean yeah, i dont know what to think lol, its been pretty overwhelming. Never had these kind of performances in a pc ever

I'm waiting for Sony to Release another adapter or something like it. They released one for PS4, once PS Now released for PC, maybe they'll release another one for the Dualsense too.

Why do you think you'll need a Sony adapter? I'm at least assuming that it will work just fine with most bluetooth adapters.

Oh, not needing one, normal bluetooth will work for sure. The adapter for DS4 is just nice as it also directly shows the controller as an audio sink, allowing you to connect a headphones to it.

sigh neweggs tweet last night saying what time zen 3 goes on sales had a link to their amd cpus which didnt update this morning. by the time i see it was only advertised on their homepage they were all sold out :crying-face:

Congratulations! The price-performance situation is pretty abysmal compared to the 3080, but the 3080 may have felt like too little of an upgrade compared to the 2080 ti. Additionally, the 3090 FE was available to buy for me, while the 3080 was not.

newegg sure messed up another launch. a lot of people saying how nothing showed up in search and only through a promotion page which of course everything was gone by the time people found them. i had one all the way through getting to paypal then saying they were gone.

I fanatically updated the nvidia.com web page and finally got the 3090 FE during a 30 minute window when a new batch was available.

This hasn't been as big a shitshow as the 3000-series launches have, but it's cutting it close.

I'm dreading the launch of the Radeon cards. Glad I don't have any more big highly desired purchases to make this year.

With all the Zen 3 reviews coming out, is it looking like the 5600x will be the best performer? I picked up the 3800x recently but I'm wondering whether to return it for a 5600x when it's available.
 
I haven't checked 5600X and 5800X reviews just yet to decide on which one I'm actually getting.
From the AMD charts I was leaning heavily on 5800X but depending on my budget I may have to go lower. :blobweary:

I should go look at the reviews.

Considering I'll need to get a new motherboard and RAM as well and will also probably grab one of those fancy NVMes I've been wondering if I should just grab a new case and powersupply too and basically "build a new one", just transfer graphics card and some harddrives and leave the old one as a secondary PC I'll keep or give someone. :thinking-blob:
 
My only concern with the 5600x might be the 6 core. The rest of the gaming world is kinda moving to 8 core so I'm a little concerned that I might be digging myself into a hole in regards to future proofing.
 
Personally I very much doubt the core count is going to be the bottleneck any time soon, on most systems anyway. Maybe if you are gaming at 60+ refresh rates, but at that point you also need a monster gpu too which probably means you are loaded and can afford 5950X. 💸



After looking at the reviews, it doesn't seem like 5800X justifies its higher price too well, for a gaming machine. And there are couple of local stores with some stock still left on 5600X... Wish me luck.

Ordered a 5600X. I hope the stock was correct because if it was, I'm gonna get it next week. Also put the mobo I was planning to get in the same order, yay. The RAM I have is good to go already. :wd_herewego:

Forgot to also put in a few cans of air so I guess I'm gonna grab that from a local store.
OR I might have a half full can somewhere here already.

I'm not 100% sure but I think all the next gen systems were 8 core as well? I kinda doubt that should influence/force pc gaming in that direction but I'm not an expert by any means.

In any case, I've been mulling over the thought of returning my 3800x to get a 5600x. The cost is basically the same and picking up a 6900 when it releases would let me take advantage of their smart access memory gimmick.

Welp, despite pre-orders opening at 2pm, and despite me getting an order in at 2:09pm, I missed the boat on the 5800X. Scan have put me into a queue, my place I do not know yet.

I'm still trying to get a video card. The rest of my PC has been sitting here for 3.5 weeks. I check bestbuy, Amazon, and Newegg a couple times a day, but nothing. EVGA is supposed to notify me when one becomes available, but who knows when that will happen. 2021?
