I sleep for a week and awake to find no important Silksong information. MF Doom died two months ago apparently? Maybe the worst Humble Choice I've ever seen (except Minoria). I'm going back to sleep.

I did finish Kingdom Rush Vengeance yesterday. Finest tower defense game I've played in a long time.

New Build.

Whaddaya Think?

RTX 3090
Ryzen 5 3600 (Plan to replace with one of the Zen 3's when they're more widely available)
32GBs of DDR4-3600
Two Samsung 980 Pros @ 1TB each
1250W PSU

And topped it off with that beast of a monitor right there. 4K, 144Hz, HDR.

Everything I could ever need and want.

Averages in the 60's in Cold War at 4K with all RTX features turned on with DLSS.
Still gonna drop below 10 fps in original Binding of Isaac.

I'm surprised to read that sunday is a working day in your country. Do you have another day off or do you work 6 days a week?
Used to be thursday and friday were the off days
It was changed and has been friday and saturday; Thursday is a working day for most western countries (and banks) so off days were changed to accommodate that.

I want to love StarSector but it is tough.
You can't really explore much because of the supplies and fuel situation. Maybe it would get better with a colony, but now I have to constantly babysit the colony from pirates and other factions.

I'll admit I never made it that far because of the aforementioned supply issue. I love the idea of the game but I don't have the mental energy to get serious with it, and then there's the fact that 1.0 is going to change a lot too.

I got a couple of other things surrounding the sale (Manifold Garden, Surviving Mars season pass on another store) and I might still grab a couple things because just that kind of time for me where buying stuff feels good I guess but here's what I got right off Steam. I did pretty well at actually completing games last year though so not totally unhappy with my backlog change. I've already completed Manifold Garden, and started Carto (which is cute and wholesome as anything), and like 70% through current Teardown campaign?

Started Divinity OS 2 again today, played it long time ago the first time for some hours, but quit for reasons I don't remember so I started fresh today. Switched between DOS2, CK3, Hades and Spelunky 2 today and felt I was in entertainment heaven. :p

Just had an awesome moment in Banner Saga 2. Two consecutive fights and halfway through the second I had only 2 archers against 5 enemies practically at full health (including a mini-boss) and still managed to win.
Also,
I liked Rook a lot but I'm enjoying playing as Alette even more, she's even less prepared for this than her father was but she's handling it like a champ which is awesome to see.

Whenever I play P4G I'm always taken aback by how great it looks after spending hundreds of hours on the PS2 and Vita versions. I never emulated the game so I'm not used to it looking so good.
P4G was sub-native res and had no AA, the IQ was just terrible.
I keep noticing little details that I never noticed before.

So my Game Pass games have been more than a little disappointing.

Gato Roboto: I like pixel art. This game is ugly as sin, no art to speak of, just a bunch of white crap on black background... and with no shades of grey, everything's blurring together, I spent my time getting hit by ennemies that I can't discern from the rest of the props. The only tell being that they move, slightly. And even then, what are they? One's a frog. The rest? No idea, it's awful pixel art, Metroid 2 on Game Boy had better, clearer, sprites.
Feels like a flash game from before Cave Story, just... really poor.

Undermine: cool gameplay, it's pretty much Isaac with a slight melee focus and nice, colorful pixel art in this one.
Buuut it's not a rogue-lite, it's a grinder, where you spend your runs dying to get gold/gems to not only get new items in future runs (which would be fine), but to just get straight upgrades to your next runs. I fucking hate this shitty trope.
No, I don't want the game to be a cakewalk, I want a chance to defeat it fair and square each time.
Here it means that the game REQUIRES you to constantly get upgrades, exactly like Rogue Legacy, you CAN defeat it from the beginning... if you accept several hundreds hits to kill later bosses as something normal. I don't.
And of course, when you have stats, you don't fear anything in early stages, but still need them to get Isaac loot, so... it's both easy, slow and annoying at both sides of the spectrum.
Garbage design.

Spiritfarer: gorgeous, amazing animations, super cute.
Quickly forgets its metroidvania elements in favor of Harvest Moon grind, you spend your time farming, feeding your cute guys, travel at sea and fish, fish, FISH, FIIIIISH, barely seeing any dialogue... that strays very fast far way from the cute and touching grim reaper that you are to just... gossip between girls because that's what they do (and it's the longest dialogue in the entire game to this point!). And that guy is a union leader, see, fun, anticapitalism, feminism yay. Or not, because it feels like it's written by a 15 years old with a bingo to fill up.
Also amazing visuals! All islands look the same. If you wanted to reuse the same background, maybe make a single large one, not five tiny ones with nothing on them. It's just a rehash, both visually and in gameplay, which is just a complete bore.

Sea travel has never, ever been done well in any videogame ever (Wind Waker can get fucked), and should never be. it's fucking boring and ugly. When you have 95% of it, and the rest is barely registering as anything else than menial fetch quests, I stop playing.

also - that website address is just ...

There's like two? Other companies that do or advertise other old school games that aren't available on GOG and they're mostly total shit games for 97% of them with 3% being like oh right I remember that being vaguely good.
It's mostly the stuff literally no one wants.

At least they won't have to pay a percentage of sales to be available to an audience of millions. So there is that as a benefit, no idea what the the downside is tbh.

The whole indie Cyberpunk censorship this is pretty dumb. I like lewd stuff, but you can tell that the publisher just wants to drag the thing out to get attention. I remember at launch for that game that people were actually disappointed that the game was not as lewd as it looked. So it does makes sense as to why there would be conser for the game given how people in general thought the game was rather sexual and even have R18+ stuff. But it doesn't. If you look at the Steam reviews the game was okay. It had some positive reviews and that was just about it, but all of a sudden now you see it getting a lot more reviews and a decent amount of those seem to be because of the censorship thing.

Like Spanwave said, because of the way that the eshop is (and also the eshop has finally been patched up so the cheapest that a game can be is now $1.99USD, it can't be lower than that form now on) had the game released without this topic it would have just released on the eshop and nobody would have cared and people would have just moved on. This whole topic just creates buzz for the game.

From what I recall this is not the first time that this has happened to a Top Hat game, the other time it was for the FPS Citedel. With that game people thought that the dev wanted to make a game that glorified gore (there is a fetish of dead people or something like that), because in the game all the machines that you kill have anime girls in them or something like that. The devs stopped using twitter because people went after him for it, and even then the video behind it all didn't really seemed to be bothered by it but just thought it was weird.

I really appreciate this impression. You don't see that approach with the media reviews for this game. Something about it seems slightly too sappy to hold up (I haven't played it) and what you touched on there might be why. I also didn't like their previous game and I'm skeptical.

no downsides ... none whatsoever
I love it when companies pretend that emulation doesn't exist and that 99% of the world doesn't do it and know about it. You missed your chance by two decades. I digitally own all the games you could sell me already. And deciding to sell them decades too late is just ... but nah. Big money in limiting your game to a certain platform I hear.

First game of 2021 finished: Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch.

I had just finished watching all of Miyazaki directed Studio Ghibli movies last month and figured I get into these. Very pretty, especially the environments. Playable characters models look a little flat though. I liked it for being a simple RPG but I could not get with the familiar designs and the battle system. If it was just controlling the main three I would've enjoyed it more instead of playing hot potato with three different familiars (though playing NNK2 for a bit it seems like they weren't able to pull it off). There was also a lot of non voiced part which made it flow not as well. Would be sad moments or big revels just have them saying a word or gasp then it's just me scrolling through text. Enjoyed it for the visuals but pretty underwhelming experience as a JRPG.

Off to NNK2.

:shrugblob:

I enjoyed Spiritfarer myself. It called itself a cozy management game so the Harvest Moon elements were expected from the start. I can definitely see how if you weren't a fan of the gameplay loop to begin with, the game would feel like a slog. And it did for me towards the end game, where I decided collecting achievements by grinding for resources was ultimately pointless. Huh. Kind of like real life, really.

I am a sap, so I teared up at every departure too. The dialogue can feel a bit overwrought at times but there's something about every character that reflects a bit of the real world and I think that's what touched me.
