Yup. The PC ports of SR are crap.
Dreamcast emulation in general is better than most (modern!) PC ports of the games that appeared on it... also applies to a lot of N64 games.

Notably, the largest seasonal sales of the year (Summer, Autumn, Winter) were record breaking in terms of revenue generated for developers and publishers, something we touched on in our [UWSL]recap[/UWSL] of the Autumn Sale. But it wasn't all going to the top-end: for example, there was a 36% increase in the number of games that grossed over $100k from the 2019 Winter Sale to the 2020 Winter Sale.
An interesting note: various countries' government bodies approached us and other large Internet companies to see how we could help mitigate the rise in global traffic that ISPs were seeing, because it was getting to a point where it was affecting people's ability to work from home and their children's remote schooling. In response, we made some [UWSL]changes[/UWSL] to help manage the bandwidth during work and school hours, and to defer updates to the evenings.

Onward to 2021

While many of the projects we planned to ship in 2020 did, in fact, ship, dealing with an ongoing pandemic shifted some of our priorities throughout the year. This inevitably meant that some of the planned projects had to take a backseat to managing the increased traffic and demand from the additional millions of users on Steam. However, we still think it's useful for us to talk publicly about some of the projects we want to push forward in 2021.

  • Steam China - Together with our partner Perfect World, the team has been hard at work, and we're really close to launching this program to bring Steam onshore into China in early 2021.
  • User Experience Improvements - We're looking at filing down the rough edges that most
    users encounter when interacting with Steam–basically, we want to make it as easy as possible to buy, install, and play games.
  • Steam Login - We still plan on refreshing the Steam Mobile app and making it easier for users to login and keep their accounts secure.
  • [UWSL]The Steam Points program[/UWSL] - We're brainstorming more ways to reward users, including folks who aren't especially interested in Steam Community features.
  • Linux - We're continuing to invest in technology that improves game compatibility and performance through [UWSL]Steam Play[/UWSL]. We're also putting together new ways for prospective users to get into Linux gaming and experience these improvements.
  • [UWSL]Steam Labs[/UWSL] - Along with iterating on existing experiments, such as [UWSL]010 - Browse[/UWSL] and [UWSL]012 - Exploring Sales[/UWSL], we're exploring new ways for players to browse the catalog in the coming year.

Alyx did a lot for VR.

A couple more games like that from Valve and they will pretty much push VR into mainstream by themselves lol.

I am assuming they are working on a new Index headset too. I can see something inspired by the Quest.

I can't imagine how much money Valve is making these days and they are a rather small company (300-400?).

I think it was 4-5 years ago there were reports people talking about how filthy reach Valve is and how big of a money making machine Steam is.

Yup. The PC ports of SR are crap.

At this rate, we'd need a time machine in order to go back and get the source code for this game and then re construct it for a better PC version at least :V
Also, dunno bout you but I'd take SM64 PC over og N64 and any ports :V

Somebody help me out with Retroarch on Steam: I want to get Flycast or an emu similar to it installed but I cannot for the life of me figure out where to find it actually download it
Like...the best I could find is this

...but I can't find what files I can have retroarch recognize to let me use the bloody emulator on it.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Steam China. I'm a pessimistic lad and still think Steam International will be blocked which will cause a big hit to the user numbers since many Chinese gamers won't bother with VPNs and the Steam China library won't be nearly as robust. I'd love to be wrong though.

Fairly sure current numbers include Perfect Worlds numbers (which is what will become Steam China)

I don't know if it matters what the Chinese Devs think, i suppose it all hinges on what the Chinese government guidelines tell them is allowed.
I can't see them being told to not publish internationally though... hopefully.

The question is how distinct Steam China and regular Steam will be. If it's very simple for Chinese devs to also offer their games on regular Steam, they why should they say no to free money?

Meanwhile Atlus is releasing Persona games on Steam
Sony is releasing 1st party games on Steam
EA pushing their entire catalog and subscription service on Steam
Microsoft is almost all in on Steam
Cyberpunk shattering records for singleplayer game on Steam

Meanwhile Ubisoft just sitting there missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars :unsure:

Nothing displays the power of Streamers more than my gaming buddy of 16 years coming back to gaming after his gaming hiatus (he only played a few weeks in the last 18 months, while we were together daily for 16 years :cryblob:)
Erm, as I was saying, he came back this week, bought and started playing Pillars of eternity 2. I asked him if he started it because he watched Cohh play it and he affirmed it.
He isn't even semi-fluent in English and still watches Cohh and is influenced by the games he plays on stream.

Baseless speculation on my part, but I would guess Ubisoft and Epic have some sort of long term contract. Back in 2019 Ubisoft mentioned extending its partnership with Epic.

I cannot believe I managed to lose this run. Thanks to bomb paste, I could perform an Ankh skip at 4-3.



Ended up dying at 6-2 to the 3-min ghost, because I did not enter the Ushabti room in time, as it was hidden in the top left corner, opposite to the entrance in the top right corner, and the exit was in the bottom right corner. The Ankh was useless as I could not enter the room due to the ghost anyway.

:ghosty: :pilotRIP: All my fault for being over-cautious (or over-confident with respect to the timer) and not being faster. This game though... :mald::eek:lmecry:

I'm not sure they are losing that much. Dropping Steam drove lots of people to uplay, giving them 100% of the profit of AC Valhalla, their best selling game ever. Also lots of people seem to buy Ubisofts games on EGS, because they are dirt cheap with all these coupons.

If anything, Ubisoft is missing sales from impulse buyers during the Steam sales. But we don't know how much money these sales are making for Ubisoft compared to the revenue from uplay and EGS.

It will happen. Unknown ETA tho, although I expect it to happen some time between mid 2021-mid 2022

Baseless speculation on my part, but I would guess Ubisoft and Epic have some sort of long term contract. Back in 2019 Ubisoft mentioned extending its partnership with Epic.
General consensus based on multiple wording analysis (yes, some of us do this weird thing xD) is that "extending the partnership" is not based in time but individual games/waves of games.

Main reason to think this is that at some point last year, Division 2 got a movement on Steam and although it didn't happen, similar cases like that one meant that the game was going to be resurrected shortly after, most notorious case was Satisfactory which had an identical movement followed by consecutive movements in regular time basis.

ANYWAY, nothing is forever, Ubisoft will comeback although we don't know when but it is more or less clear (and JaseC will agree with me here) that the moment they announce they are coming back it's the moment they announce Uplay+ is also going to be released on Steam, like EA did with their service.

Each time you post about Spelunky 2 I remember that I've hardly played the first one. I need to get on that soon.
The first game did not instantly click with me. I have played it a few times and was very disappointed (I expected a more classical platformer).
I tried again 6 months later, and it was not better. It only clicked a year later after I gave it another try.

The second game instantly clicked due to the nostalgia, and the improvements to the classical formula.

I think you overestimate the scope, or better said, the size of the engagement driven by Ubi games on EGS, what makes you think that?

Economical reports? they don't give us splits.

Top seller lists? EGS lists are manual so, yeah, no thanks and without specific numbers for scale, we can't even calculate the size.

Social media? bubbles.

Please don't forget that Odyssey somehow managed to make into Silver category of best sellers 2020, FC5 was bronze and R6 Siege is Platinum in terms of MTX and newcomers, so a good chunck of their income is still coming from Steam.

So, the thing is, have everyone jumped? I don't think so, so yeah, it's not like it's going to be forever. It will take years but everything comes back.
