In other news, I know there have been several posts about the game already, but since I was clearly sleeping when I checked them (probably, the words visual novel had something to do with it, since it's not a genre I'm crazy about), I just realized two things about the upcoming game Death Mark:

1 - It really like the look of the game.
2 - It's done by Experience Inc., developer of old school dungeon crawlers like Stranger of Sword City, and a developer whose games are, for me, an immediate day one purchase on Steam.

Why didn't anyone tell me Experience Inc. had another game coming out on Steam soon??? :p

Have you heard of our lord and saviour The House in Fata Morgana?

Still my number 1 VN recommendation. It's not crazy long (20-30 hours depending on speed), has gorgeous art and music, very very very little "anime bullshit" - if at all - and tackles certain mature themes which get handled them extremely well.

----
Ohh, Death Mark looks intriguing. I have no experience with Experience Inc. games, but I've been meaning to experience them. Have my eyes on Stranger of Sword City, though I've heard there's some definitive version that's not on Steam?
Operation Abyss and Babel are also on my wishlist.

What even is the status of this game? Is it complete? Did the dev just reach a specific build and decided that's all the work that needs to be done outside of patching some stuff? I've been eyeing this game for years now and I don't know if I should drop $10 for it if it isn't 100% complete.

Afterparty has had it's 2019 release date removed from Steam, and the dev's previous game is the current freebie on Epic Store

GOD FUCKING DAMN IT
This one was pretty much expected.
The team has a close connection with Skybound, who you might remember from that awesome move of pulling the last season of The Walking Dead from the Steam store.

Oh well, more money saved to support other developers. ;)

Even only getting the free games means y'all are supporting Epic, boosting their numbers and telling some accountant that you're interested in them, leading to more moneyhats. Buy them on Steam instead, most of them are worth it and were on sale or in bundles anyway.

Can't delete your account if you've never had one.

btw i blame the entire epic store debacle on all these weak willed vermin that jumped on the free Shadow Complex Remastered offer.
That was the beginning of the end.
Always suspected that to have been too good to be true. I still bit and later bought on Steam but my shame will be eternal.

It looks like v1.3 is the latest update. And after you click on "get it now"...

You arrive on a page with a Humble widget and a mention that the Humble Indie Store does not have a storefront...

So, the website is very outdated. Maybe they all migrated to Discord.

I made an account when they were going back to their roots and making a new Unreal Tournament (they've given up that as well I suppose, no major developments in ages). I then kept it to try Fortnite back then which I keep installed but never play. Now I do add all the free games in the account but haven't fired up any of them at all. I'm keeping it in case they ever get their head out of their ass and provide a consumer friendly / consumer first platform like Steam.

These days the trends are all about MAU and engagement stats and shit so you aren't helping them with that by adding and not even downloading the games.

I wonder if Metro Exodus being advertised before every other youtube video I load up means it's their best seller they want to keep the momentum of or it means it's flopping compared to the previous games, not to mention the higher expectations of this one, so they're trying super hard to show Deep Silver that the game isn't generating that much much worse revenue than on Steam on top of their bag of money to keep them onboard....

I wish we knew when their first NDAs expire to get some real sales talk from the first (complete, like Ashen) games added to their service. I feel despite some shortcomings Ashen would have been an indie hit like Hollow Knight on Steam but it seems only EGS promoters ever talked about it post-release.

I wonder what they do with data from people not using their freebies. Maybe it doesn't matter?

But that's the data they get from me. Someone who doesn't play the freebies he redeems, doesn't buy any games on their store, and only turns on the launcher every two weeks out of compulsion to hoard freebies.

yeah, funnily enough - i also never claimed the "free" Shadow Complex ... couldn't be bothered even back then ... i figured it would come to steam eventually, and even if not - it's not exactly a game i NEEDED to play at any cost, so ... ¯\(ツ)

yeah, at this point i'd say it's a given ... 'cause this game is DEFINITELY releasing this year (they already confirmed that a few weeks back)

and they removed the release date on steam only 6 days ago ... and 2 days ago we find out Oxenfree is a freebie ... so ... yeah ...

that's what i do ... well, what i already did even before they announced the store :p they're only interested in high-profile indie games (or ones that are already successful), and i already own all of those

and i did buy the Subnautica expandalone on steam too, naturally

Welp. I was really looking forward to Afterparty considering how much I liked their previous game, Oxenfree. 😢

I don't have an Epic account and won't be making one but... damn. Wish some COMPETITION would come along so I could buy it literally anywhere else. :p

That's what I'm doing, but I don't blame people for getting free stuff. Games are generally not cheap and many people would very much like to save money when possible. Those that do have the means to buy the games, yeah, give the middle finger to Epic and buy them elsewhere.

thing is - most (if not all) of those freebies were already in bundles or at least on deep-deep sales ... no?

I have no idea to be honest. I have Subnautica on my wishlist but since by backlog is still sizeable I haven't checked to see if it was available for cheap.

Another embarrassing article advertising Epic's Store on VG247:

Just as the launcher you put up with to play Half-Life 2 became Steam, the window you open to boot up Fortnite is becoming far more – a bona fide PC games shop to rival Valve’s long-undisputed storefront.

The Epic Games Store has money and momentum behind it, and it’s not going anywhere. It can’t yet match Steam’s catalogue, especially not since Valve opened the floodgates and welcomed every would-be developer with a copy of a free game engine and a spare Sunday to the platform. But a more curated approach is seeing the Epic Store become home to some great games.

I mean... really?

Wow just wow. They really don't get it, no one would mind if EGS sold games ALSO. It can be a home to some great games all it want's if those games are free to be elsewhere too. .

So many of these articles regarding EGS just sound like paid adverts to me and there's a couple of sites i visit less because of it. Shame really but there we go some people and outlets are willfully hand-waving the actual problems people have with the hypocritical way EGS are operating. It's a farce.

I have an Epic account for work when i'm packaging Unreal SDK and stuff but that gets used once or twice a year so i can check people can login and get plugins etc. I also made a new email and Epic account when they launched with the idea of taking their freebies and i've not logged in since, not even to claim freebie games. I also bought Subnautica: Below Zero on Steam or GOG so i begrudgingly have to admit they influenced one of my purchase decisions, lol.

back then i honestly tried to activate/play it for hours but never actually managed to do it until i forgot login details ... cca year later i managed to ligin back (to check UT4) but Shadow complex wasnt even registered there . And i am pretty i had it downloaded previously
