Woo, Melty Blood (mostly) works now! French Bread dropped a small patch today, and it appears to have fixed the NA servers. I've still encountered a few stray problems, but not enough to hamper the experience.

I'm still dunno who to play, but I'm currently leaning towards Arcueid or Kohaku (with Ciel and Miyako as distant possibilities). I haven't played Kohaku outside of maids team yet, but she seems interesting. As for Arc, I played ~30 matches with her and had a pretty good time despite how simple she is. I need to learn how to convert hits in the corner with her, since she has multiple ways to wallbounce someone into the corner, but it's always too high for me to naturally pick up.

Honestly, now that I'm getting a better feel for its quirks, the game is becoming lots of fun. It's got some odd quirks that I'm not used to yet, like how there are barely any dedicated anti-airs, or how odd the movement can feel (air-dashing doesn't correct your facing direction, and that's hurting my brain). But I'm getting the hang of the wacky shield wars nonsense and managing all the crazy meters and special moves. Also, if you play it, for the love of all things sacred, never hit a button when the opponent is in Blood Heat. I have stolen so many rounds already off shielding in Blood Heat, which auto-activates your Last Arc Drive.

Oh, and color customization isn't as detailed as I'd like, but still fun. Here's my dripless Arc:
The more I watch Lumina, the more cursed it looks lol

I am very much not a fan of the shield gimmick.

Shield is wild. It's fun to play with so far, but I suspect it's going to be very divisive. It introduces so much RPS in nearly every situation.

When you get into a full on back-and-forth shield war, it feels like total nonsense (but NGL, it feels great to come out on top after that).

Any horror game recommendations for October. Playing Dead Space 2 soon again but haven't delved to deeply into horror games.
I'm a big game of action/horror? If that's a genre. Examples being Resident Evil and Dead Space Could never really get into horror games where you couldn't fight back and the only option is running.

The Monolith horror games like Condemned Criminal Origins and FEAR 1 and 2 (Avoid 3) are great. Condemned especially since the melee combat is brutal .

I see Square signing even more exclusivity deals for their future games. These guys are greedy as f*ck.
They are already selling exclusivity to anyone who will throw them a quick buck, how much worse can it get? I bet we can get them to release Guardians of the Galaxy exclusively for Metacouncil members if we all chip in the change we have in our pockets. If they want to further erode their franchises until they drive them completely into the ground, let them. Customers have already given the middle finger to Epic, there's no saving that sinking ship.

Aside from the one's mentioned above, there's:

Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth - get the GOG version.
Clive Barker's Undying
Darkwood - it's more survival horror, but you get to fight back. You can also use guns. I highly recommend this game for Spooktober because of it's excellent sound design & atmosphere.
Cold Fear - It's similar to the older Resident Evil. games, particularly RE 4. Might even call it a clone, lol.

Been playing quite a bit of Diablo 2: Resurrected. It is impressive how good the controller support is for a game that was NOT built around it. Granded I'm not trying to play Sorc and teleport around or use Blizzard all over the screen, but I'm doing quite well with my Bow Amazon. Cleared all of Normal (through Baal) with minimal issues using the controller. I think its actually BETTER than keyboard in some ways. or maybe my old man hands are just better at controllers than keyboards these days. Really have to hand it to Vicarious Visions here. This is quality work. Too bad Acti-Blizz is such a shitshow.

I'm gonna laugh when Final Fantasy 16 releases on Steam 1 or 2 years after the PS5 version and has worse numbers than Tales of Arise.

just had a read through the article.

The tl;dr version appears to be.
  1. If you are going from win 10 to 11 then VBS isn’t activated.
  2. If you are doing a clean install from a download then it isn’t activated.
  3. If you are buying a store bought PC from one of the big boys and has an oem then it will be activated.

however this is all based on the current insider build and probably will change. For the better or the worse, who knows.

The Talos Principle is 90% off, a new historical low on Steam:

I don't say this lightly, but this is among best game of this generation (PS4/XB1 era)
Game of generation which do something that do something unique, twist on an old formula or do a regular thing really well.

So, Talos Principle, Detention, Darkwood, Bloodborne, INSIDE, Tetris Effect, Hollow Knight (in my view).

Do we have a thread for it?

I just looked through the quite specific "local coop games with some sort of campaign" subset and wishlisted these:

  • Onsen Master, a hot spring customer management game with a cooperative campaign mode.
  • Together, a re-coloring metroidvania with some sort of timed split screen mechanic.
  • Deep Space Gardening, in which you cooperatively try to save the ecosystem of miniature planets.
  • Bread & Fred, a designed-for-two-players precision physics platformer with a central rope swinging mechanic.
  • TailQuest Defense, a beautiful non-violent tower defense / puzzle platformer mix.

At times like this I wonder how some people can be so upset at the state of gaming overall. We really live in a golden age of gaming and creativity.
yes we do :evilblob:

as for the state of gaming .... lots of folks is lazer focused only on AAA stuff and ignore anything indie alltogether

What is VBS?
Stands for Virtualisation Based Security. It's a bunch of measures that Windows implemented to make it harder for malware to take over your PC. A lot of this is already implemented in Windows 10, and most of it is not at all relevant for system performance.
The specific thing in that article, from what I can gather, is Hypervisor Code Integrity (HVCI). That's an optional part of VBS, it also requires low level support from system drivers, so probably won't even be a thing for older machines. What it does is checking programs that run on your PC for code that looks dangerous and it's trying to defend against zero day exploits.
Overall pretty great stuff for businesses and other security critical places, like hospitals. None of this is new, from what I understand, it was just previously locked behind special Enterprise editions of Windows, and it seems with Windows 11 it's enabled on OEM devices by default.

You can also turn it off via a registry option, so as long as MIcrosoft doesn't make mandatory, it's not such a big deal, as long you keep in mind to disable it on new Windows 10 devices.

Somehow cdkeys has Typing of the Dead keys. This game never discounts on steam in recent years so I would recommend grabbing it now when supply lasts.

Edit: Out of stock already! That's fast.
Seems like they restocked it, thanks for the heads-up! Perfect for the Halloween season.

Paradox has just cancelled multiple games you've never heard about.
Paradox still has 15 games in development, including Victoria 3, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, and console versions of Crusader Kings 3 and Shadowrun Trilogy. The remaining unannounced projects include a mix of original games and sequels.

So, what does this mean? Well, we know from the Nvidia lottery guy/girl we might not expect to be released anymore the following titles:

Master Wok found that "Harebrained Shemes" was involved in the ShadowRun trilogy which might suggest "Project FPS" could have been a sequel of some sorts of the trilogy perhaps?

New historical lowest price for GreedFall (might appear in next Choice?)

GreedFall - 75% - $8.89/~7.67€

And someone, sorry can't remember who, was waiting for a better deal on Castlevania Advance Collection

Castlevania Advance Collection - 8% - $18.49/~15,95€

That’s awfully tempting… Though, with Wingamestore the euro price I get in PayPal tends to be higher than what’s on the store page because it’s all converted from dollars.

I’ve been holding off on this one not because it’s not good value, but the previous collection’s prices dropped like a rock within like three months and I’m not burning to play this one right now.

This could be a pretty good spooky October game.
Being Welsh, I am always down for games set in Wales.

My only concern is this is made by an English person so I’m concerned they will lean heavily on Welsh stereotypes. I know that’s the norm for horror, and I generally don’t mind stereotypes in Welsh horror/gothic, even when it’s made by non-Welsh, but it can be seen as offensive/grating when English people do it because of the exploitative/extractive nature that English colonialism has had on Wales both in the present and historically.

But I will wait and see what people think when they play it. North Wales could be nothing more than a backdrop.

Last night I was playing a game that I launched from desktop mode but played with a controller, and the in-game Steam overlay UI switched to the big picture mode version (and alt-tabbing out still showed the desktop client), which I thought was a neat change. Today, however, it's back to desktop UI when using a controller. I wonder if that was a bug then. It would be nice to have the option for the client to do that consistently.

boomers, it's always the doom and gloom people who only want high budget games and are never happy about anything, gaming is incredibly affordable these days, and they even have several decades of games they could go back and play and I doubt they've played everything.

Virtuos has a pretty spotty record overall.
Virtuos mission?

I wonder why they didn't do a Ryza 3. Did the second one underperform ? Especially surprising given the (tired ?) narrative obsession with three acts, and also because for several years, this series was the poster child for trilogies.

Does the new Fatal Frame require knowledge of the previous games to play?
You better hope not ! I loved Fatal Frame 1 back in the day, but re-experiencing it a couple months ago was its own kind of hell.

Yeah, it's been changed. When you shield in Type Lumina, you can input A/C, B, or B+C to get different types of shield counters. A or C will immediately go into a launcher. B will "nothing personnel, kid" you behind the opponent for a overhead, and B+C drains moon gauge in exchange for an invincible attack.

The wacky bit is that if the opponent isn't doing an ability that requires meter, they can cancel their move into a shield of their own. Which leads into shield wars where you go back and forth doing shield counters until someone mistimes theirs.

I somehow doubt they cancelled a Cities Skylines 2, it's just such a huge name attached to a proven developer.
The Project titles seem so much more likely.
