ladies, gentlemen, and others,

excessive hype and wishful thinking isn't conducive to a healthy lifestyle or game enjoyment.
It could be the best thing ever.
Or it could be a disaster.

but one thing is clear: hyping yourself up and interpreting marketing material and determining how awesome that would be without ever having played it, is a path to disappointment.
This is the best thing to do. I've only seen, at most, one trailer for each of my most anticipated games and I actively go out of my way to avoid viewing new content and poring over every minute detail.

I thought BOTW would melt my brain and it didn't. Never again.

(Not saying BOTW is a bad game)

Souls games have enough of a proven track record that hype is warranted. For me, I never thought Dark Souls would even have a sequel, so it's especially been a blast looking forward to new spinoffs and sequels and having each one be great!

Otherwise, I totally agree with you.

I went on a media blackout with No Man's Sky when i'd seen enough to decide it was something i was interested in and i was loving my time with the game while people were losing their minds.

I learnt the lesson that hype and daydreams never match reality when i was a child and they'd show arcade screenshots on the advertising for Spectrum games or some big license would turn out to be a sidescrolling platformer. Some people just can't help but set themselves up for disappointment though so it's a never ending cycle.

But is it a (classic) souls game?
The open-world could totally fuck up the claustrophobic and just-another-corridor/room atmosphere of the Souls games.
I never played Souls games, but that is what always stood out to me.
The drive to go further, find a way to kill the monsters before you or find another way
To beat the big bad boss at the end to get to a new region
To make the most out of narrow hallways or deadly bridges, dodging deadly attacks without getting cornered or thrown into the abyss

Out of 2 souls I played: ds1 was cancer port that took more time tweaking to playable state than playing; ds2 was rather trash. Don't know about the rest.

I wish all games were as trash as DS2 is.
Fully agreed! It's the best Dark Souls game, and one of my favourite games of all time.
True story: just today I was talking to two coworkers about all the neat features Dark Souls 2 had that 3 inexplicably dropped.

Anyway, I am basically certain I'll enjoy Elden Ring, and I don't plan to see a single image (never mind video) of it from now until I play it.

Man, I'm too cheap and never bought a game for 60$ but I'm seriously considering it for Elden Ring. That gameplay preview looked amazing. February can't come fast enough :blobclosecry:

BTW, Forza Horizon 5 is absolutely killing it on Steam and reviews, so happy to know that game is a success. Hopefully, they also kill it with that Fable game. when it launches in 2028 lmao.

I doubt Take-Two would give them any type of creative freedom after they lost money trying to make Cthulhu meets Saints Row lol.

Watch them get Vicarious Visioned and become a GTA6 support team.
Nah Take2 needs more games. And Take2 was ready to make Mafia 4 but gave the studio choice so they picked new IP. They did great job with Mafia DE too.

Man if you had that much issue getting DS1 running how have you survived as a PC gamer. DSfix is a god send and takes like 15 minutes to set up if you don't read the readme.txt file which tells you to disable in-game AA.

FU Bandai!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They don't even bother to sell the PC CE In NA.
Yeah, that really blows. I'd love to get a CE that includes a Steam code. The website says the Premium one will be available for US and Canada soon so I'll keep an eye out. Hopefully that one will be available for PC but I'm not holding my breath. IIRC the EU still regularly gets physical releases for PC games so it probable just comes down to the realities of different markets... :confounded-face:

If I start feeling particularly stupid, I might just get the console one for the extra junk and buy the game on Steam anyway. There's a leftover Xbox One Cyberpunk CE I spotted online that I'm currently trying to talk myself out of ordering... 🤡

What's so stupid is that SE!!!!! SE of all companies made a PC CE for Nier Replicant!!!!!!

Yes it was just a Steam code and stuff but that's to be expected and I'm perfectly okay with that.

I want a CE for all the stuff it comes with (special stuff that you mostly can't get anywhere else, and the game). I could order a XSX CE but why would I do that when I plan to mainly play on PC.

One of the best parts of PC gaming is that you thankfully don't have to pay anywhere near the full price as long as the publisher is willing to work with the usual key sellers.
It's already 25% off on GMG and only €35.69 on cdkeys.

Downunder.
If anyone sees a "legit" store carrying it (Humble, GMG, Fanatical, WinGameStore, ...), please let me know, since there's no launch discount on Steam.
The other two Experience RPG published by Aksys is on Humble, so hopefully it will show up the sooner or later.

Frankly, Valve should rework their suggested retail pricing for a lot of regions. $85 AUD for a non-AAA release is a big ask. Aksys' PC ports also only have the bare essentials, even though the localisation is ... serviceable to say the least.

I said it on Era and i will say it here, nothing in that elden Ring preview was new. Same standard open world design tropes with souls gameplay. You still traverse empty spaces, you still interact with standard souls static NPCs, there is still no proper full movement animation for different terrain...
Not every game has to be revolutionary. A game doesn't have to be new to be good.

My take would be: be reasonably hype. Gaming should be exciting and fun but a second coming is very rare. People should have the wildest dreams (that's what makes us human), meanwhile, should also remember the wildest dreams are still dreams, and they probably won't become reality.

I haven't played any Soulsborne game before, but Elden Ring has every indication that it will be a good game at the very least.
