I really think Epic should’ve put quality clauses in their exclusivity deals.

Busted ports and bad games as exclusives hurts their rep as bad as the creator’s.

But this happens time and time again, from multiple different developers and publishers.

In my mind it shows how wet behind the ears they are and naive they’ve been in building their platform. And how dreadful the third parties have been in exploiting them for it.

EGS just has a rep as user-paid QA 12 months before the Steam release now. Any game I see going exclusive (that isn’t published by Epic) just rings alarm bells for me now.
It's almost like Epic are viewed as a free cash machine.

Probably because they thought this was still 2012 and they could starve their competitor of a few big games and that would have an impact.

Thing is, currently the number of games releasing each day is so big that it just not a viable strategy.

And they aren't really in a position to impose many conditions to the publishers they deal with.

I mean basically, yeah.

I just don’t see how Epic didn’t see this happening from half a mile away.
I think they honestly thought it was going to disrupt steam. That they would be viewed the saviours of PC Gaming but never really told the consumer what it needed saving from.

And yet here we are. Steams growth doesn't seem to be slowing down. The games still come to steam, even the so called lifetime exclusives.

Meanwhile epic has a customer base that is trained around free games and sales with a voucher.

thb they never really saw it from the side of a customer beyond throwing them free games .... most of their work was spent to market to publishers and jurnous (aka the months and months of shittalking by Sergei and Tim on twitter before EGS was revealed)

They basically thought ... that if they convince publishers and jurnous , that customers will follow

Funny isn't it, for a company that cut its teeth on PC gaming, they don't seem to understand pc gaming.

FF7R and SoP would have had mediocre ports even if they weren't exclusive. SE treats the PC market as an afterthought. At best, negative Steam reviews might have caused SE to work on post release patches.

In funnier news, epicgames.com now redirects to store.epicgames.com. They're probably getting ready to launch their social features at epiccommunity.com. 🙃

Very cool move by Epic. They will be donating potentially hundreds of millions of dollars, especially by timing it at the start of the new season.
Call me a cynical bitch all they long if you want, but they are not doing that because their hearts are in the right place, but to get more goodwill and PR.

How about instead Epic uses some of those tens of millions that was going to timed exclusives to aid Ukraine instead? That's far better use of money than paying for timed exclusives barely anyone will buy anyways because nobody likes to buy stuff from EGS.

I don't disagree that they're doing it for PR, but realistically every company does it for PR. Their new season seems to be war themed which is extremely unfortunate timing for them since I know these events are planned months in advance. They're trying to get ahead of any bad publicity by donating money which at the end of the day is the most important thing and should be praised.
So what you are saying, if the new season wasn't war-themed, Epic probably wouldn't have done that Ukraine aid project they are doing? How nice of them.

Just realized today a new Borderlands game is coming soon out, timed exclusive on EGS, has a Steam page though.

Boy that game sure is coming in hot. That game is doa on PC, compared to Blands 3, there's extremely little hype behind it, doesn't even seem like Epic cares about it, at least Epic did some Blands 3 advertising "Hey, Blands 3 is coming exclusively to EGS" in many places on the Internet, but nothing on Wonderlands.

IIRC, Borderlands 3 sold 1.5 million units in 2 weeks on EGS and is one of the few success stories on the platform. It feels like there is a lot less hype for Tiny Tina, but I think it'll still sell well enough on Epic. It'll move at least several hundred thousand units.

I remembered buying Borderlands 3 on Epic and the game ended up being a technical mess for awhile after launch. Wonderlands seems to be reviewing well so I might take a look into at it once it reaches Steam at a good discount. Definitely not making the mistake of falling for FOMO like I did with Borderlands 3.

Nobody cares about EGS sales without coupons. Which is completely understandable, coupons does give people an extra incentive to buy games on EGS. Sadly for Epic, sooner or later, they need to train people into not using coupons as they burn money on it, but at some point, it will be too late for that.

It may already be too late. Epic's yearly revenue for all 3rd party games is lower than Steam's revenue for Elden Ring. At best, their store will become another Origin or Uplay that people only use for exclusives. And Epic is the only one to blame for this.

Yeah, I can definetly see EGS becoming that launcher you open once a while to play through that epic published game and that's it.

And still, for all we know, some Epic published games might show up on Steam after some time.

Still weirded out by how Alan Wake Remastered was in the Nvidia leak for Steam, but the game was built with Epic Games from scratch.

I assume a Steam release will depend on how well the game sells on EGS.

Personally I don't mind buying 1st party games in publishers storefront. But I will NEVER buy any of Epic's games on EGS, because their publishing label is part of their continuous strategy to cripple Steam using exclusivity deals. I will not support this in any way.

Back in my days at uni at a history class I read an old letter that said "They would cut their own arm off if with that they could poke one of our eyes with it"

And to be honest I think that's the whole approach Tim Sweeney takes with all of this (and I'm not saying Epic) because pretty much this has been a personal crusade from the start, and the couple of people I know in the business seems to agree with that.

Money, units sold and internal pressure are driving factors at Epic (as with all companies) but a lot of EGS related stuff depends greatly on Tim's mood and the great plan that only lives up in his own mind.

I've played Final Fantasy Origin for about 5 hours and I'm just not feeling it. It's not terrible, but it really is just a worse Nioh. The combat doesn't feel as smooth as Nioh and it has all the same trappings as Nioh (boring level design and lame loot system). I got too entrenched in the memes and should have just saved my money renting it.

It really does feel like he has a vendetta against certain companies (aka Valve and Apple).

I was initially upset about Pinball FX being exclusive, but hoo boy they can keep it if they're going to run this business model.
Time to buy all of their DLCs that I haven't buy yet on steam in the next sale. Won't be surprised if they pulled it from steam after the new one comes out.

Really happy to see studios enforcing the "publishers taking exclusivity deals because their garbage won't actually sell on Steam" stereotype.

The DLC from FX3 won't carry over into the new game so you'll have to buy them all again if you decide to play the new FX on Steam in a year. I'm not even going to bother giving them more money, and I say that as someone who bought a bunch of tables on both Steam and Switch.

Barring changes to their tickets/subscription for tables instead of what they're offering now on steam, I'm gonna opt for buying their cheap regional pricing tables on steam while I can since I doubt I'll be shelling out any amount of money for their new game even a year from now on steam.

If I didn't already put Zen on my ignore list because of their constant exclusivity deals with Epic, I would definitely do so now. 😡

It's so damn sad to see such a great developer turning into shit out of pure greed. 😔

It's like they fully embraced Epic's greed model. Going to fail massively.
I definitely hope so. But Zen probably doesn't care, they have already been paid by Epic...

Reading about the Pinball FX and I think there are mobile games thinking they have gone too far.

It has all the scummy practices in it as well. You don't buy tables in £/$ instead in tickets. So are never quite sure how much a table is going to cost exactly. Then it appears they are selling the currency in multiples so a pack will either never quite have enough tickets in it or there are far too many for one table but not enough for two.

It is also down as an Early Access game. Yet all the methods of fleecing the customer are there. I bet if there are technical problems at launch, none of them will be around the store.

Another easy Fuck Em.

It's funny how Sweeney claimed that EGS would lead to lower game prices, while in reality lots of the recent games with absurd pricing (Hitman 3, Pinball FX, FF7 remake, Kingdom Hearts etc) are EGS exclusives.
I dunno, I think Sweeney was right, you can't get price lower than zero, he never mentioned you had to actually buy the games :steam_cleanseal:

Reddit is filled with complaints about the new Pinball FX. From tons of bugs and unsupported controllers, to terrible performance and even "tickets" disappearing into thin air. Does anyone else notice a pattern in the latest batch of EGS exclusives? 🤔
Wot I wrote on era:

Installed it, it's a complete techincal mess. Menus don't work, constantly switching between mouse and controller when one stops working. The high score table keeps going below the screen with no way to scroll down. FX3 was a solid 144fps, could barely get 40fps in this and this was after turning off vsync, before that I couldn't break 10fps even on the menus.

Already uninstalled it.

The new Mummy Zen Original table is complete pants as well.
The game also seems to really only support Ray tracing, if you have an older card 10 series etc... it looks much worse than FX3. No reflections etc...

Incredible. I'm not sure what else Zen could have done to piss off their loyal userbase.

I wonder if all these bad decisions are made by Zen or rather by Saber Interactive who owns them now. In any case, I'm done with them. I hope Zaccaria Pinball will get more love after all of this.

Signing EGS (or really, any platform) exclusivity deals to help get your game over the line is disappointing, but I can understand the reasoning.

But signing a deal just because the money’s there, then producing low effort shit that you have the gall to sell to your customers is really despicable.

I think if you take the financial security of an exclusivity deal, you owe it not only to your customers, but the people writing the cheque, to make the best game possible. It still may not be a great game, but you shouldn’t be putting customers or the platform holder in the position of dealing with refunds and backlash for broken games.

I have to assume there is a contract in place to publish by a certain date no matter the state of the game. Just call it early access and let the fans deal with it.

So I installed the EGS launcher today to see what I owned on EGS(as far as I can tell you cannot look at your library on the web - maybe I'm wrong). I've never bought anything, and haven't claimed a free game from them in months... and yet I have 131 games!

As I scrolled through my library I clicked on one of the games to see what it was. Was there a description, screenshots, a trailer? Nope, just an install prompt. So I have to Google it or search for it in the Store tab to even see what it is. So stupid.

Stop complaining. It's just another launcher and Steam needs competition.

Doesn't look like Roblox will be on EGS any time soon. 🙃

Not sure if anyone else has kept up with the news, but it looks like the EU is going to pass legislation that will force Apple to allow alternative app stores on iOS, so Tim will probably get what he wants. There's also a bunch of other stuff in the bill, but that's beyond my understanding.

Sounds terrible for EGS considering Borderlands have been quite the PC-centric franchise.
Reading the disclaimer at the bottom, and I don't think EGS sales are even tracked. It looks like they only get data from consoles and Steam.

So where does the last 33% of digital sales come from?

The text might also just be standard template for articles.
