February Quiz - Clues #3

I have a message for all the top chefs gathered here - the menu must be ready by Monday evening! So you only have this weekend left.

At the moment there are just under sixty people, but nobody from this forum. I hope there'll be some players from here too, come out of hibernation - even with less than twenty points you'll make it into the top 10. :)

So Valdien Parsnip Wibblewozzer FunnyJay MegaApple mssq QFNS Arsene freshVeggie KainXVIII Mutant Strawberry Ruvon xxr RionaaM and DriftedPlanet - how about it? :)

To make this round more palatable for you, here are the clues #3:

1) In game 17 you control a kitchen robot, it only appeared on Commodore computers.
2) There is no dinner bubbling in the cooking pot of 19, instead you mix up magic potions.
3) Titles 4 and 12 come from the arcades of the early 80s and were then ported to many other systems.
4) The number 18 is a cooking game from 2019 for all current modern systems.

Deadline is Monday 28 February, enter via Video Game Quiz - February - cooking & kitchens

Here's the quiz one last time: link

I only managed to get 20... with 1 entry that I'm sure I'll get wrong.

I also never really pay attention to the cooking aspects in games, so yeah, not an easy one for me.

February Quiz - Answers & Score

What a reception, with 108 guests it's no longer just a dinner but a real feast instead! :D Usually each quiz season starts off a bit sluggish, but with over a hundred players this round was really well attended.

Maybe it's also because of the new forums? :) With the Rocket Beans, the Shmups Forum and the World of Players community there are three new entries in 2022 - in addition, the "lastgamestanding" has moved to join the new "Wasted" gaming page. Welcome all!

Here are the answers... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the high score.

Just had no clue about 9, 11, 19 and 24.

Well, I think I've seen Chewy in some local magazine at the time, it seems vaguely familiar. But not enough to go on.
I've also probably seen Witchtastic somewhere too since it's so recent, I'm sure prudis has posted a trailer of it somewhere where I hang out. :grinning-face:

This round was hard, but I still managed to do some sleuthing and finding out a few of the more obscure ones, like Deep Space Nine and The Big Deal.
Chewy definitely looked familiar, but I couldn't place it, and even now when I know the name I cannot say that I remember ever hearing about it.
I have probably seen it in a computer mag back in the day or something.

I can take solace in the ten I didn't get were all games I didn't know at all. Not sure if I would have gotten points if I had just entered Star Trek for that Deep Space Nine game but I was pretty certain immediately that was Star Trek but none of my searches came up with anything remotely close looking to that so I just moved on. I think I've seen Fast Food before as the screenshot looks vaguely familiar and Witchtastic also looked like something I might have seen before. But the rest are largely just big blank spots.

March Quiz - the "Mystery Theme"

February was about the kitchen, March is about.... yes, about what?? This time you can answer the question of the theme yourself! All 25 games this month have one crucial detail in common. Whoever finds out the secret theme (and enters it correctly in the bonus question) gets a bonus point for themselves AND the other players in their forum.

Maybe it's easy, maybe it's difficult - I'm curious myself how many of you recognise the theme. :)

Deadline is Thursday 31st March, participation via Video Game Quiz - March - the Mystery Theme.

Here comes the quiz, have fun:

March Quiz - Clues #1

Halfway through the month I want to offer you some help. So far thirty people are playing, of which no one is from this forum. Will a few more people join in the remaining two weeks? I wish you a nice weekend, hopefully with enough time to take part! :)

So, here are the clues #1:

1) Game 12 is a famous JRPG.
2) The 16 is the only fighting game in this round.
3) In picture 3 you are just deciding on the faction of a well-known RTS game.
4) If you like 2D platformers, you should check out number 1, 6 and 8.

Closing date is Thursday March 31st, participation via Video Game Quiz - March - the Mystery Theme

Here is the quiz again, good luck: link

Submitted mine, but I'm going to try and find the one I'm missing. Don't have super high hopes though based on some googling, maybe I'm interpreting the pic wrong so my search terms are not even close. :rip:

Oh hey, I actually found it. I think this will be my first full 25/25 round.

March Quiz - Answers & High Score

Oh what a riddle! Oh what a secret! A mystery of the very special kind! What was the topic of the last round? ;) Less than half of you had guessed it correctly...

Let's go back to the past. About two years ago I asked you in the bonus question about your "best gaming year", eighty people had voted then and delivered a very clear result:

Accordingly, I've been wanting to do a round on this topic for a while. And since we set a new record with 128 players, I consider the experiment a success. :) Thanks to all who took part!

I'm pleased with my result as I feel like even if I spent a lot more time looking I was unlikely to spot the three I didn't get. Also, I really liked having to figure out the theme so I'm all for that being a thing in future quizzes.

I was missing #25 for a bit there at the end, At that point I knew the theme and was fairly sure it was a shmup and tried to my best to google shmups of 1998 but of course couldn't find anything since it's not going to be on any top 10 list or anything of the sort.

So in the end I submitted the 24/25 first just in case my browser crashed due to all tabs and stuff. I had 158 mobygames tabs open. :D
Had limited my search to the year, selected genre as action, perspective top down and hoped for the best. And of course because the title starts with U, it would be one of the final 10 tabs, if I remember right.

Also yeah, echoing what Wibble said, figuring out the theme was a neat extra.

Lol! I feel bad for not understanding the theme. I voted for that year and like quite a few of those games! Several that I didn't get. Great quiz

I submitted Neverhood for number 8, but I guess that wasn't the actual game featured in the quiz. Thanks for the point either way!

I got number 25 wrong, though. I was pretty sure that it was Cyvern because it was also released in 1998. Should have given it another look. :p

Yeah I did this at start too but I did eventually figure out the theme and had to take a double take if there was some version of Neverhood released in 1998 or what's up. :p

But hey 24 points! I think this was easily my best month.

April Quiz - Fruits & Vegetables

This month I've had my hands full in my personal life and didn't finish my planned quiz.... Annoying, but luckily I always have another one up my sleeve! Accordingly, this time it's about healthy eating, er I mean fruits & vegetables. ;)

Whether it's simple fruit bonuses in arcade games, or talking vegetables with arms and legs from modern titles - it's once again up to you to figure out all the games. :D

No bonus points this round, but after being asked if the "gender & race" mix of the last intro gif was representative.... (no it wasn't, it was randomly selected!) ...I'll just ask you guys now to check. If you don't want to you don't have to, it's completely optional.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th of April, participation via Video Game Quiz - April - fruits & veggies.

Here comes the quiz, have fun:

I'm sorry, but I was reminded of this after taking a look at the quiz.

Enjoy the free answer. :p
I have to expect that'll be one of the most answered (despite being halfway down the quiz) anyhow so not really a big concern. Fun quiz theme. At a glance I think I know around 18ish or so. The last row is always what stresses me the most since there'll be no hints for it and this time I know two right away so that's a bonus.

Well, don't make it a habit and we're cool. ;)

Well no shit, with Valdien posting the answer! ;) But you are right, it is at 90% correct entries right now (we're at thirty players)... I underestimated how popular that game was!
I was more a Space Channel 5 kind of guy when it came to rythm games. :D Oh wait, Gitaroo Man was also nice.

Fun quiz theme
Thank you! :) A little bit rushed this month, so I'm happy to hear that. But I am still very bummed out that I forgot to include Bugsnax!

Any reason to post morer clips from PaRappa is worth it. I think that game is really popular though maybe that's just cause I played so much of it as kid haha.

That said if you really wanted to get obscure I think there's an egg and chicken level later in the game that might not be instantly recognizable. Though that doesn't really fit the theme either....

I do remember that level if you mess up the cake you are supposed to be baking it comes out with like... starfish? or shrimp or something on it instead of being a cake. Good times.

Shrimp sounds right.

And yeah, I think the only reason it's not 100% answered are some of the sites the quiz is posted at are probably a bit more specialty much older retro so it's easy to understand they might not have paid attention to stuff that was console related or after 1995 or something. Parappa is definitely one of the most instantly recognizable games, no matter what level.

April Quiz - Clues #1

Dear kids, eat more vegetables! It's healthy and all. I don't want to preach any further, instead I wish you Happy Easter with enough time to participate in the April round. Over forty people are already playing. :)

To make participation palatable (ha!), I'll now write down a few hints:

1) In this round, Nintendo has supremacy - ten games are only available on their platforms.
2) At picture 10 you can see a small part of the main character.
3) For the strawberries of number 5 you need especially good platforming skills.
4) Only 8 games in this round use 3D graphics.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th of April, participation via Video Game Quiz - April - fruits & veggies.

Here's the quiz again, good luck!

I'm up to 22 now. Missing two from the last row and one from the 4'th. Don't think I'll able to get them without hints; although for 22 I remember seeing it once before just can't recall the title. :suicide-blob:

April Quiz - Clues #2

Have you ever wondered what the fruit on #1 is? After all, it's there from the very first game of the series from the early 90s... I googled it today, it's a tomato. Now you know. :)
Over 60 people are already taking part in this veggie round, you can too! :p

Even more so with these second and last hints:

1) Six games in this round-up first appeared as arcade machines.
2) In game 13 you fight against gods of Greek mythology.
3) Number 17 is a game for the Atari 2600.
4) And the last one - the 16th entry is a fantasy RPG

Deadline is next week Saturday the 30th of April, enter via Video Game Quiz - April - fruits & veggies.

Here's the quiz again, you have barely one week left :) link
