April Quiz - Answers & Score

Did you know that strawberries are not berries, but nuts? But bananas are berries? So weird! Let's make things clearer by solving the veggie puzzle... we start with the bonus question. If you had imagined the quiz players to be a rather homogeneous group, you were right: if you leave out the almost 15% "don't like to answer" fraction, the field of players (this time 132 people strong) of this quiz series is almost 95% male and about 90% white. Here's a pie chart: link
Does it matter? No. Was it interesting to see once? I think it was. :)

But now something really important, namely the answers to lasts months puzzle... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the award ceremony.

May Quiz - Topless Dudes

Over the many years of this quiz series, we've really had quite a few puzzles whose theme was more or less "women".... number one, two, three and the totally not juvenile number four. ;)

It's an absurdity that we never did this with the male video game characters! So we're making up for it now, and "topless" the 25 gentlemen have to be as well. So how about it - do you recognise all games just by the sixpacks???

This round is considerably less retro than usual, I hope you can still manage. :)

Deadline is Tuesday 31 May, enter via Video Game Quiz - May - Topless Dudes.

Here comes the quiz, have fun:

This is going to be a really tough month. I only recognize around half and since the shots often don't give much for hints on stuff to search by it kind of falls into either "you know it or you don't" territory.

I feel like this an issue with many modern games that have a more realistic look... it doesn't stand out and is harder to tell apart. There's not much UI this time either (apart from 4, 7 and 10...) that might have helped otherwise. Let's see what you can do this month, and I promise a return to Retro and Pixels for June. ;)

This might be an easy month for me. Got 23 so far!
Glad to hear it! The first dozen player entries tell me this round is more difficult that the Veggies. :p

May Quiz - Clues #1

In this round we'll know if someone uses Google or not... your browser history will have some very strange entries and you'll have probably seen some "fan art" that you would rather forget again (at least that's how I felt during the research). Sorry not sorry ;)

There are 25 players so far, and today I would like to give you a few hints:

1) There was a lot of excitement around AAA title #3 in the current decade. I can't say anything about the style though, because that's also the name of the game. ;)
2) Questions about #8? Several characters from this series can also be found in Super Smash Bros.
3) Five games in this round have only appeared on Nintendo consoles (but one of them is just an exclusive remake).
4) Four titles are pure fighting games, where the gameplay consists 100% of 1vs1 fights.

Deadline is Tuesday 31st May, participation via Video Game Quiz - May - Topless Dudes.

Here's the quiz again, have fun: link

May Quiz - Clues #2

There are only nine days left for you to get in on this round.... are you in yet? So far no one from here (out of just under 40 total), so probably NOT. :p Let's go, here are the final clues!

1) The #13 is a dating sim, if you want you can date the gentleman pictured!
2) Number 7 comes from a long line of creative JRPGs.
3) Game 18 is part of a series with stealth gameplay and is played from either first or 3rd person perspective.
4) And last - the titles in this picture did NOT make it into this round for various reasons: picture ...because I didn't know the games, I had forgotten the character, didn't think they were suitable, they are already scheduled for another round or have already been used in the past. :)

Deadline is Tuesday 31st of May, enter via Video Game Quiz - May - Topless Dudes

May Quiz - Clues #3

Attention, this is the last weekend before the deadline! Early next week this round will be over.
So far, one player from this community has joined, out of a total of over fifty. Neither number is particularly large, so Valdien Parsnip Wibblewozzer MegaApple mssq QFNS freshVeggie KainXVIII Mutant Strawberry Ruvon xxr RionaaM Bufbaf ...get a move on!

Maybe it will help if I give a third set of clues for once? :) Here you go:

1) Game number 4 is from Electronic Arts.
2) The 3, 17 and 19 are AAA open world titles, but only the former plays mainly in first person perspective.
3) Only two games in this round have appeared on the Commodore Amiga.
4) Picture 11 shows the final boss.

Deadline is Tuesday 31st May, participation via Video Game Quiz - May - Topless Dudes.

This'll be one of my worst months. Didn't bother counting but I think I'll score around 13ish? Probably 3-5 of them look familiar but practically zero of the screenshots give me enough of anything to base a search off of so I didn't bother even trying to search for many of them. Definitely relies on either knowing them right away or just not knowing it at all.

I know I'll be annoyed when the few I recognize are given answers but oh well.

Funny enough I tend to prefer more polygonal and modern games in your quizzes just because I usually do better there. But since this one has no genre theme, and a bunch of characters kind of just blend together, many of them just go into a generic "fit white male" sort of bucket in my head. Like I'm sure I've played or seen #11 but that dude is giving me nothing in my brain to remember who he is or what game it's from. But I'm sure once I see the answer I'll think "Oh yeah, of course". But also it gives me nothing to try to Google. "White man end boss" is too many games!

May Quiz - Answers & Score

For a while it looked like we had a "gay panic" at our hands and the player numbers were far from 100... then in the last two days enough people have turned up for a triple digit number anyway, so I'm happy. :)

Here are the results of the poll:

Beat'em'ups clearly won! Well then, there will be a good beating sometime this year. ;)

But I have to ask you a question: Why was "Cyberpunk 2077" so hard to guess? Less than half got it right, even though I gave several hints about it (AAA, open world, this decade, first-person perspective, lots of press). Also the picture shows the implants on the arms and the "facial stumps" which I only know from Cyberpunk. How come I have misjudged this so much?

But now it's time for the results of the quiz... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the award ceremony.

1) Wii Sports
The Wii launch and flagship title is a nobrainer, everyone got this one right.
Answer rate: 100%
Other suggestions: -

2) God of War 2
Answer rate: 96%
Other suggestions: Bryan Fury

3) Cyberpunk 2077
As discussed in the intro text, it's a mystery to me why so few have recognised this.
Answer rate: 48%

Other suggestions: King of Fighters, Saints Rows

7) Persona 4
Answer rate: 68%
Other suggestions: Catherine, Catherine Full Body, Hades, Narupo Shippuden

8.) Fire Emblem
I think it was Path of Radiance? Heavens, now I'm not sure myself! :/
Anyway, bet you don't dare to do a Google image search for "Ike Fire emblem topless"?
Answer rate: 67%
Other suggestions: Kingdom Hearts, Atelier Ryza, Breath of Fire, Chrono Cross, FFVII: Crisis Core, Final Fantasy, Trails Of Cold Steel, Xenoblade.

9) Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes

12) NieR:Automata

14) Street Fighter 4
Answer rate: 58%
Other suggestions: 4x Asuras Wrath, Dragon Quest XI, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Nioh, Odama, Zelda

Answer rate: 50%
Other suggestions: 5x Mafia, 3x LA Noire, James Bond, Metal Gear Solid, Saints Row, Scarface

Answer rate: 19%
Other suggestions: Die Hard Arcade, 3x Too Human, Doom, Fallout New Vegas, Metal Gear Solid, Odin, Ring, Zeus

24) Time Commando
The hardest title of this round - I've probably never seen a more abstruse time travel story.

I was contemplating on voting for either Beat 'em ups or shmups, but eventually settled for the former because shmups can be very hard to differentiate since a lot of the older ones look alike.

Anyway, now that the quiz is over, I can finally post this :p :

But I have to ask you a question: Why was "Cyberpunk 2077" so hard to guess? Less than half got it right, even though I gave several hints about it (AAA, open world, this decade, first-person perspective, lots of press). Also the picture shows the implants on the arms and the "facial stumps" which I only know from Cyberpunk. How come I have misjudged this so much?
It's because that's like the least Cyberpunk looking shot you can find. It's in daytime (which is anti-Cyberpunk settings), looks like a regular wooden slatted house or whatever behind the fellow with nothing really "future" in his surroundings, the tattoos don't look sci-fi and would fit some trashy character from a GTA game, and even when zoomed in it's just confusing what's on his face. I assumed it was just some sort of wrestler mask sort of thing that I wasn't understanding. It honestly just didn't make any sense to look at his face. And the guy isn't some main character that's been in marketing or anything that I recognize.

Edit: I voted Dating Sim because it seemed the most interesting and there are genres with dating elements within them which seemed like it could open up the variety while staying on theme. And I really, really don't enjoy beat em ups. That'll likely be another poor month for me when that comes along.

Edit 2: Also, that Hitman screenshot changed! It was most definitely some dude with like a tip of a gun coming in from the left side In the original quiz. GTA shot is also different but at least a lot more similar and the same character.

I thought the Cyberpunk 2077 pic looked like someone from Horizon Zero Dawn. Guess I was tripped up by the red hair and "tribal"-isch look.

I also didn't get Cyberpunk. The dude's just too generic looking and the face stuff just looks like weird half mask or something. :grinning-face: Other than that I suppose I should've gotten Hitman (though the pic was different). Other ones that I missed were 17, 22, 23 and 24.

Both 17 and 18 had their pics changed, right?
Didn't 18 show that CIA agent that 47 keeps rescuing in each game? And now it's one of the Fuchs brothers (or whatever they are called). I'm simply asking since I think the guy in 17 looks like the CIA agent I saw in pic 18.

Many people wrote lengthy explanations, but I like this one the most. Thank you! :)

No, number 17 only had their answer pic changed - I wanted to show the player character of that GTA DLC to make it easier to connect.

But number 18...
Didn't 18 show that CIA agent that 47 keeps rescuing in each game?
Number 18 changed? Didn't it always show a half naked dude with red shorts from the early hitman games?

June Quiz - Retro Pixel 2022

After last month's theme gave several people a strange browsing history and caused some discontent, we're falling back to familiar territory for June: the annual Retro Pixel Quiz with zoomed in game characters. ;)

We have 25 games with (mostly) 2D graphics from the years 1985 to 2023, so as usual old & new combined for your enjoyment and scaled up so far you could count all the pixels. Have fun! :)

We're looking for the name of the game and not the name of the character (even if they are sometimes identical), and if you recognise the series that's enough - you don't have to name the exact instalment.

Deadline is Thursday 30th June, enter via Video Game Quiz - June - Retro Pixel

Here comes the quiz, good luck:

June Quiz - Clues #1

And once again the puzzle is DIFFICULT. So far 26 participants, very low average score and there's still games that have not been recognised.... Maybe YOU can do it? :)

Here come the first clues:

1) Eight games in this round have been released exclusively for only one system - three of them for Nintendo GBA and three for Commodore Amiga.
2) Number 6 - in this final part of a platformer trilogy, you play a ...fish.
3) #9 came out exclusively for the Switch in 2017, a sports game with more plot than usual.
4) Game 7 is the only title with 3D graphics in this round, here you are on a relaxing holiday and climb a mountain.

Deadline is Thursday 30 June, please enter via Video Game Quiz - June - Retro Pixel.

Here is the quiz again, good luck: link

June Quiz - Clues #2

Wow, what a short month: we are actually in the last weekend of June already! The short time meets an extra nasty puzzle where despite forty players (of which one from here) not all games have been recognised yet.
Whether it's 1986 or 2023, Spectrum home computer or Nintendo Switch... here are the last hints, your forum needs you! :)

1) The games are spread across the decades as follows: three from the 80s, ten 90s, three 00s, six 10s and three from this decade.
2) Numbers 8 & 14 are early spin-offs from famous & long-running JRPG series.
3) Numbers 12 and 17 you can only play on Windows and Switch... but one of them didn't come out yet.
4) The following titles have (also) been released on the Commodore Amiga: 4,6,11,16,19,20,22,25.

Deadline is next Thursday the 30th of June, participation via Video Game Quiz - June - Retro Pixel

Here is the quiz again, good luck: link

June Quiz - Answers & Score

It is rare that a game of this series has an answer rate of less than 10% - this time it was even just 0.7% for game #24, so only one user out of over 100 players found the right answer. Congrats to Marek from the ResetEra for this achievement! o_o

About the bonus question: 94% of you are vaccinated, 6% have no vaccination (and 24 users were left out because of no or unclear answer). Sounds quite reasonable?

And on a personal note - the NexGam community and the World-of-Players are dropping out due to a lack of players, instead the Forum64 and the Circuit Board are joining with a total of seven players. A warm welcome! :)

Lol, curious to know how I ended up getting that 0.0007 score.

Better luck next time, Wibble. :coffee-blob:
He explained it before in here when someone asked and I know I always think it has to do the timing of when the response was sent in. But for some reason I thought there was an alternate way of slight score differences (like teeny fractions of a point are added for exact answers vs just getting the series?). Mostly I think it just means you submitted yours right before I did.

Edit: Also, you're really lucky. I knew Cortex Command but couldn't recall the title and since I was doing this quiz while working (don't tell anyone!) I rushed it and ended up not doing much searching. That would have been the one to give me the extra point over you if I had taken more time!

Yes, the timestamp theory was true for the first few seasons, that's probably why it is such a persistant misconception today. ;)
Here is an updated version of my explanation from last year:

The points are weighted depending on how many people got the answer correct. Last round can serve as an example, here only two people didn't know "Lion King", while only one person had the answer to "Abduction of Oscar Z". In the old system, both games would have given the same amount of score, but would that have been fair? So to solve this, I have started to use an excel formula to add small decimal amounts to each point, depending on the answer rate:

Lion King has an answer rate of 99%, the correct answer is worth 1.0015 points.
Abduction of Oscar Z has an answer rate of 1%, the correct answer is worth 1.0993 points.
Final Fantasy 2 has an answer rate of 53%, the correct answer is worth 1.0474 points.

Those scores are added together, which forms a much better ranking that just "sort by entry time".
Here are all users with "17 points" with their full score listed:

Havieeab17,7905
Gerhard S.mnc17,7336
Klunkymmx17,7095
Valdienmtc17,6854
Wibblewozzermtc17,6847

I hope that helps! :)

I don't like using timestamps to decide who gets the higher position, but sometimes (if two players really have identical answers) I have to.

(...) and since I was doing this quiz while working (don't tell anyone!)
Ahem, if my work didn't have frequent long gaps of waiting for coworkers, you wouldn't get the quiz results on the 1st or 2nd each month. ;) Luckily shuffling numbers in excel looks the same for every industry - or hobby.

July Quiz - Gaming Maps

Well, when was the last time you drew a map yourself in a video game? :) I think my last really big dungeon map was in the RPG Ishar 2 in the 90s, in my old math exercise book... after that, small stuff at most. This round is about all kinds of "maps" - from futuristic radar UIs to classic dungeon crawlers, from transparent automaps to floor plans scribbled on paper.

So, how many do you know? And bonus question, where did I take the map from the intro picture from? ;)

Once again, I'm sure I've left out a lot of really great games because I simply didn't know them (or the titles were already in previous rounds). Leave me a comment with your favourite missing map? :)

Interesting quiz theme. Looks very tough though.

I don't remember if I've ever drawn a really big map, but La-Mulana 2 is probably the last time I mapped stuff out in a more serious manner.

Fun idea for a quiz. I recognize some of these immediately, but also have no idea on a large number of them. Gonna be a tough one, I reckon.

July Quiz - Clues #1

This round has been running for a week, so far 35 people have demonstrated their map skills. Not bad, but I'm sure there are plenty more to come! However, almost no one has got the bonus question right yet, so I want to give something away here - I cheated a bit, this is not a computer game. ;)

Here come the first clues:

1) Game 1 shaped its genre so much, the term "Game 1 clone" was very common for years.
2) In Game 14, the first in a long series, you are exclusively in the water.
3) The first version of map #3 more or less founded an entire genre.
4) Four titles in this round have been released exclusively for Nintendo consoles.

Here's the quiz again, good luck: link

July Quiz - Clues #2

One more weekend and then the final sprint of this round begins - you have just under ten days left to join! Forty-five players are already in.
There will be no more clues next Friday, just a reminder to the forgetful procrastinators among you. :)

Here come the second clues:

1) The 15 is an automap in a game from a west RPG series.
2) Game 10 was not released until over 20 years after its completion.
3) In title 12 you use a hovercraft as one of the ways to move around the game.
4) Nothing is Commodore exclusive, but 8, 17, 19 & 20 are multiplatform games that were also released on C64 or Amiga.

Deadline is Sunday 31st July, enter via Video Game Quiz - July - Game Maps.

Here is the quiz again, good luck: link
