Looking at some recent multistore releases, Warhammer 40k Daemonhunters was #9 this week on Steam. The same game peaked at #10 on EGS its first day and is currently at #24. Rogue Legacy 2 was #3 on Steam this week and isn't even in the top 25 on EGS, although it was in the 20s earlier this week.
Yeah, in general a multistore release will always tend to do way better on Steam than on EGS due to multiple factors like accessibility (devs can generate Steam keys for free and sell them wherever they want, which tends to better deals outside the platform holders platforms), in-platform options (like screenshots, forums or reviews) and most importantly, familiarity with the environment.

This gives us some insight into why Bandcamp's owners sold, as this has been on the horizon for quite a while. This would obviously be an issue regardless of whether Bandcamp was independent or owned by Epic.

In general I actually think Epic has a stronger case against Google than Apple. Apple has never pretend iOS was an open platform (their platform, their rules), but Google likes to say Android is an open platform as a feature until it comes to bundling other stores with their devices, at which point they start getting funny.

Things like this don't make Google look good.
IDk about why Bandcamp's owners sold, but I agree that this is why Epic acquired Bandcamp.

So that's why they got ahold of Bandcamp, to use it as a bargaining chip :(((((((((((
Ugh...

:derpblob: :derpblob: :derpblob:
Just another billionaire mad that someone, anyone, even if that includes another billion dollar company, getting a piece of the pie.

Billionaire found a way to avoid paying royalties to platform owners in order to earn even more money. What a great world we live in. 🥰
Bino. That's what all this phallic sword fighting is all about.

The worldwide Salt and Sacrifice price has seen a significant increase in some countries following its official release on the Epic Game Store (EGS) and PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. According to Ska Studios, this is because of Sony saw that the prices on the EGS were "much lower than Sony", and they thus forced to match the game's prices on all platforms. This is both good and bad news for different countries, because for places like Brazil have seen a 276% price increase from R$37.99 to R$104.90 . What's weird is that it isn't all bad, with Great Britain's price dropping from £15.99 GBP to £12.99.

I wonder how much of Steam's crappy regional pricing can be traced back to Sony (and possibly MS) flexing their potential MFN muscles. I'm sure most of it is publisher greed, but it raises an interesting point I've never considered before.

The Mega Sale starts next week alongside mystery games. I don't think Fall Guys will be the first mystery game since that seems too obvious and the announcement is Monday. One title I think could be given away is a Fallout game since Epic's Twitter page followed the Fallout account several months ago. Fallout 4 seems like a safe bet, but giving away Fallout 76 would be funnier.

Remember: lack of reviews, lack of forums, devs getting paid more means games are better than they would on Steam. Imagine how bad that would be.
The Reddit post makes me think the game is fundamentally flawed. All the money in the world can't save bad ideas.

earliest access :p
More like developers getting early access to money. I've gotta give it to developers who run Early Access for precisely 12 months without taking any feedback from the community or running regular updates, only to hit 1.0 at the most fortuitous of times: when there's money to be made on Steam - they certainly grifted Epic.

Apparently EOS patch breaks Redout on many ways on Steam (cross-play with Steam is mandatory on EGS).

So much for Epic payouts making dev care about quality (again).

This. While I don't care about EGS and it's exclusives anymore (I just blacklist them forever), it's damn sad to see people supporting or even defending it Even my colleagues caved in for Tiny Tina, despite hating Epic's money hatting.

Hope they saved up the exclusivity money, cause it's not going to get any better until it's out elsewhere on PC.
The Alan Wake Remastered "exclusivity money" was entirely for the purposes of making and marketing the game. They probably spent it all on that.

Even if they released on other stores Epic would get 100% after said store's cut (and any other charges like processing fees, sales taxes, etc.) because Epic are the publisher, and it will stay that way until the game starts turning a profit.

I think I might have said it here, but Epic has almost definitely turned to publishing to increase its margins on exclusive deals (e.g. we saw in the Apple docs that they had many titles they struggled to recoup guarantees and even changed their guarantee structure so it carried less risk for Epic), remove some of the stigma of their exclusives (i.e. "Well we funded it, so we can make it exclusive"), and use their more generous publishing terms as leverage for both their trials and industry pressure on rates.

That said, I do not think it is without fewer risks, and arguably carries even more risks. In a time when the industry entering another period of consolidation, it is strange to throw your hat in the ring. Granted, the industry has been making hand over fist cash, it is going to be interesting to see if they are not burning a candle at both ends if some things fall through though.

You can bet your ass this will end up coming to Steam at some point, maybe not a year but at some point and I have said this a lot of times (and some of you don't agree, that's ok) but in the long term this is about making money so once they see they make more money by expanding they will do this with all games.

And no, consoles won't always save your ass.

Yeah it will happen. But Epic releasing a game on Steam will be an admission of defeat, so I expect it will be a long wait.

You may be right, but I don't think so. As long as Epic gets billions of revenue from Fortnite, they won't release any of their published games on Steam.

It makes no sense to spend over a billion dollars to keep 3rd party games away from Steam, and releasing their own games on Steam at the same time.

I keep on wavering back and forth about EGP games on Steam, but I remember that Tim Sweeney is the guy who has willingly kept his game off iOS even when Apple offered to put the money in an escrow while the trial played out. His idealism trumps pragmatism.

I could see EGP games on Steam at some point, but it's going to be way down the line. In fact it could take so long that it might happen after the Kingdom Hearts games release on Steam.

Fortnite won't be profitable at the same level that it is now, forever, and engine fees aren't going to fill that kind of hole.

It's incredibly shortsighted to limit their revenue streams when other avenues exist and their own attempts haven't shown much promise.

I believe many things Epic is doing - including their attacks on Steam and Apple and acquisitions of studios and Bandcamp, is in favor of their Metaverse plans in the near future. Epic wants people to buy games, music and apps in their Metaverse and not anywhere else. No doubt they will also use exclusivity to achieve this.

I have no idea if this Metaverse will be successful or not, but Epic obviously sees this as their future cash cow. They are pumping insane amounts of money in this project, and they are convincing other investors like Sony and Tencent to do so as well.

True. But Sony isn't on some weird crusade against Steam. Epic's money hatting is another level compared to Sony's exclusivity deals that impact PC. Most of their deals only affect Xbox. I don't think Sony sees Steam as their direct competitor.

If Sony don't see PC/Steam as a direct competitor, why are monehatting some 3rd party games away for some time?

That doesn't happen a lot iirc. Most 3rd party moneyhats don't affect the PC version. FF7 remake is the only recent exception I can think of. Not sure what the reason for this was. It may just have been related to Square's greed.

I think that the real issue in the case of Alan Wake Remaster (or AW2), at least based on the article linked above about Remedy, isn't "Epic has infinite money so they don't have a reason to release the game on Steam" but "Remedy didn't made a single cent over Alan Wake Remaster". Yes, I agree Epic sees Steam as a competitor, I agree they have no reason to put their games on Steam, and I also agree they don't care if they don't get their money back on their published games if they have Fortnite money. The real issue is that Remedy also isn't making money, and the issue is that Epic has no reason to "save them" if things go south specifically because they have unlimited Fortnite funbucks. If console sales are not enough for AW:R then they won't be enough for AW2 either especially if it has a much bigger budget
You see this is why I think in the end those games will end up on Steam although I agree it will be a case of a true last resort, because the moment you ran out of console and EGS sales then Steam is the last place you can still port your game and hope to make some extra money towards your next project, and has many (and I mean many) delays that happened over the last years (if not weeks!) you will always need extra money to pay extra wages for the extra amount of time your game will take compared to the original plan. And at that point Steam is the only place left where you can still make some extra money, especially if you run out of Gamepass or PS+ offers

And make no mistake, this isn't just an Epic thing. Those extra bucks are also the reason Sony is putting their games on pc, especially since in that case they really can't put their games on Xbox or Switch so pc is the truly the only other place when you can get more money

so yeah tl;dr maybe Epic doesn't want AW:R on Steam but trust me Remedy absolutely does and in the end it will happen

https://www.courthousenews.com/judge-asks-google-developers-to-be-willow-trees-not-redwoods-ahead-of-antitrust-trial/

I came across an article that discusses the recent Bandcamp/Epic and Google proceedings. Bandcamp/Epic filed an injunction to stop Google requiring apps on the Google Play Store to use Google's payment processor. I'd suggest reading the entire article, but here is probably the most pertinent information:

Lawyers for both sides squared off in a San Francisco courtroom for a status conference Thursday, where Donato said he was disinclined to take up Epic’s motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent Google from enforcing its new policy, preferring that the parties work out a solution among themselves.

The motion, filed April 28, comes just after Epic closed on a deal to acquire Bandcamp, an “online record store and music community” that allows artists to sell music and merchandise directly to fans. Its existence on the Google Play Store now hangs in the balance.

Google attorney Glenn Pomerantz said Bandcamp executives agreed to comply with Google’s new policy prior to being bought by Epic, but communications became “terse” after the deal closed and Bandcamp stopped cooperating.

“Bandcamp was working with us to comply, and now Epic is trying to use its acquisition of Bandcamp as a weapon in this lawsuit,” Pomerantz told the judge. “They never said ‘we’re not going to comply’ until the middle of April after the Epic acquisition. Bandcamp should do what it said it was going to do — work with us to design and implement.”

“So it’s a problem of their own making,” Donato observed.

Donato also questioned the timing of Epic’s injunction motion, as it appeared to coincide with its Bandcamp purchase.

“What concerns me is it seems that Bandcamp knew no later than August 2021 that it had to switch to the Google billing system and they were working on it,” Donato said in response. “It is now eight months later and Bandcamp has new ownership. On that basis alone irreparable harm is hard to maintain. You can’t waiver for eight months and come in and say the house is on fire.”

Donato said he didn’t want to handle the matter with an injunction. “The merits of a preliminary injunction motion are so intertwined with the difficult and challenging issues in this case that I’m not going to do a fly-by,” he said. “I’m hoping Google will see its way to not doing anything on June 1.”
I know it was already said earlier in this thread, but yes, Epic most likely bought Bandcamp to use as a tool in their litigation and they're pulling the same stunts they did during the Apple trial.

EGS exclusive games have become out of sight, out of mind for me. Sure, I'll probably get bummed out if a game I was looking forward became exclusive to EGS. But afterwards, I'll just forget about it until it pops up on Steam. There are just too many good games to play in the meantime. And honestly, I have a feeling everything will work itself out, especially after seeing EGS' annual "growth" numbers and how poorly their exclusives are selling.

Developers are starting to realize it too. It's not worth the hassle to miss out on a year's worth of Steam sales for short term profits.

Fall Guys is going F2P June 21. I assume it'll also be removed from Steam on that date.

Edit:
Apparently it's staying on Steam? Surprising.

Edit 2: Nope.

However, new players will no longer be able to download Fall Guys on Steam—if you’re new to Fall Guys and would like to play on PC, you can visit the Epic Games Store™ and download the launcher there.

It seems enabling cross-play with EGS in Risk of Rain 2 disables the Steam overlay and replaces it with the EGS overlay. Looking at the ridiculous amount of games that switched to EOS lately, I really don't like where this is going. 😑

For what it's worth, I just tested this. Even with Steam/EGS cross play enabled, I didn't get an Epic overaly, but I don't have EOS or the Epic launcher installed. I assume that the EOS overlay overrides the Steam overlay if a user has those programs installed (which is really scummy).

it gets better:
I can also confirm this. Having crossplay disabled gave me eight pages of results while having crossplay enabled gave me less than one page.

I think the main reason a lot of devs is switching to EOS is mainly because its crossplay functionality since no other services provide crossplay unless the devs build it themselves. So unless there's other new online services provider or existing ones update to have crossplay support, smaller devs will continue using EOS for their games :slightly-frowning-face:

I agree it’s the cross play thing. It’s not even just about EGS and Steam. It’s also the consoles too.

I feel like this can be dealt with by carrot or stick. Valve could say Steam games must use the Steam features (at the very least, overlay) and these features cannot be overridden, only complimented, by other overlays. That’d be the stick, and you can bet Sweeney would cry foul over it.

Or they can make a better cross play product than Epic and encourage developers to use it. That’s the carrot. Sadly, it’s also a lot of work.

Is there an Epic MEGA Sale coupon?
Yes! Each Epic Games account will automatically receive a 25% Epic Coupon to be used during the MEGA Sale. The 25% Epic Coupon can only be used on games already released on the Epic Games Store. It can be used on single purchases, or on purchases with multiple games, that are $14.99 or more after any sale discounts.
The coupon was changed from a flat $10 to 25%, which means it was nerfed for cheaper items and buffed for more expensive items. Looks like the belt tightening has begun.

25% is terrible compared to a year ago unless you’re buying the more expensive games. About the only title I can find that it’s half decent value on is FF7R.
