News Epic Games Store

https://www.reddit.com/r/TransportFever3/s/j7121x5iBK

Seems like epic games store released the beta version on their store for some reason.
This is what the devs says on reddit:

"We were made aware that Epic Game Store accidentally pushed the test page live earlier today. It is very unlikely that what you downloaded will unlock (even if it is a placeholder build of the game) - or that the price mentioned was accurate as there is a lot still subject to change between now and launch. "

Sounds like it was an error from epic games, but who knows if the devs put a wrong release date or didnt update it.

It was trying to own the dev pipeline to the metaverse. You could ask the same questions about Bandcamp, Mediatonic and the Cary Towne Center. The obvious answer is they were flush with money for years and went on a shopping spree. Fortnite declined in popularity and has sadly made a recovery and they didn't have as much money to piss away.

I suspect Epic already realized any of the value they could extract from these companies and otherwise want to sell them off before their perceived value crashes thanks to AI.

Still, I think it shows Epic has questionably managed the company. They went on a shopping spree to have supporting reasons for their lawsuits (e.g. Bandcamp) and their desire to control every part of the game dev pipeline (e.g. these purchases).

FN has partly recovered, but the cracks have definitely shown.

I suppose they will now roll out their AI vibe coded social update from their one remaining EGS employee in the next few days or weeks.

Tim Sweeney getting mad that people are mad about AI.

Also he was raging against California's proposed billionaire tax.
So he's happy to gum the courts up with his lawsuits and have his employees drive to work on public roads, not to mention waste the time of planning boards for his company's new headquarters that never materialised... BUT HOW DARE THE BILLIONAIRES PAY TAXES!

Apple and the EU have settled their App Store dispute. Apple will charge:

-26% commission on In-App Purchase
-20% commission for App Store apps using alternate payment processors
-15% commission for apps that link-out for web purchases
-5% for alternate app stores

This has been approved by the EU and will go into effect October 1. This effectively kills the 20% cash back for using Fortnite's alternate payment processor and bumps up the EGS commission to 17%.

I expect an angry Tim tweet soon.

Calculate Zach Galifianakis GIF

I'm too lazy to calculate, but i guess that this makes it so having your alternative payment is not worth it.

Years ago Tim said payment processing costs about 6%-8% per transaction. Dunno what it is today but I read where Stripe has some clients that have rates as low as 3.5%. If you're pushing millions to billions of dollars then it might be worth it at that scale.

For the average developer? Probably not.

This is part of the reason why I think they can't really do any meaningful improvement to their store, Fortnite subsumes all, it consumes all There are called black hole games for a reason.

100%, their store is primarily to drive traffic to FN. Per their own (admittedly outdated) financials, they showed they were borderline losing money from third party sales without any deals or incentives applied. Throw in those deals and incentives they try to constantly run and they absolutely make nothing from the store itself.

The next question is going to be how much they try to push FN and UEFN in UE6 and to say little of how much they want to push AI. I think they risk their own precarious position to chase after a strategy that no one is asking for.

Damn he continues to show his right-wing ass. I expect him to unironically say MAGA any day now.

If payment processing is like 6%-7%, they're basically running a 0%-1% margin for third party games on EGS as they still have the 5% cash back promo for third party titles.

Here's the thing, Synthesisers required artists to write the music. Whether that was a band member, outside guy. Somebody human wrote that. Yes there was a snobisness around Synths back in the day. But they still required humans and weren't plagiarism machines.

I mainly think Apple (and Spotify?!? can't remember if they have made the same announcement) has found an excuse not to payout on some of the bigger streams. But I do also think there is a slow movement of people wanting to know if something is AI generated so they can make an informed decision. I know I do.

Also once again proving that Tim, against all his grandstanding, is very anti-consumer. He doesn't want to consumers to know what they are buying.

I am guessing here (and I could be very wrong as well) that UE6 may also have some AI component for the Audio side. Or a deal with something like SONO.

Eurogamer just posted:

Epic Games Store overhaul might be "too little, too late", says Newzoo analyst

While Epic has spent much of this year promising a launcher overhaul, including a faster, redesigned storefront with tailored recommendations and quicker ways to browse, one industry analyst has revealed that it might not be enough. Read more

Capcom is still putting their games on EGS. 🤮

Player spending on 3rd party games grew last uear because of the 20% cashback coupons, after dropping hard for several years in a row. :cautious:

No doubt the free Fortnite skins will raise 3rd party sales as well, but it's extremely unlikely they'll ever catch up with Steams growth.
There's an indie game on EGS called Kernel Hearts that sold 50k copies in 24 hours and 100k copies in a week due to a Fortnite skin promo so that's a rare Epic W (apologies for the direct Twitter links as Xcancel just got a C&D).

The interesting thing is that it has been the #1 game on their best seller chart for a week straight and hasn't been dethroned. If it takes 100k sales to top the charts for a week nonstop, kinda gives an idea of how game sales in general are over there.
