Essentially there have been no changes to their Epic review system since I saw it shared on the public Steam Deck discord in March. Initially, there was some code that seemed to suggest a carbon copy of Steam's review system, but they must have ditched it.

This is what I saw back in March

I think the ability to give more feedback than ups and down is good, it allows you to talk specifically about good points of the game, so I would like Steam to allow to give that kind of "awards" to games they review positively. The problem is more the lack of written reviews and that star ratings in general are meh (there is a reason why most platforms turned into ups and downs).

So, about this showcase, what I think there will be showcased.

1 - they will likely show this new changes for the Store.
2 - perhaps a few indies or one or two AAAs (timed exclisives)
3 - the same trailers we saw today.
4 - one or two publishing partner projects.

I doubt we will get new AAA announcements (or hell AA). Epic showcase is very much lower viewership than the Dorito Pope one, so if you want to showcase your big gets you do it there, not in a smaller showcase a day later. Teh announcement of Goat Simulator in the dorito pope showcase kinda skews it.
I can see them announcing new things for their GAAS (Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys), and then maybe a publishing partner project.

Curious if Uncharted will be there and timed exclusive.
Why do you have that impression? :)

EULA updated today on Steam and got another update a few hours ago.
No Sony game will be exclusive (or at least that's the way I see it ^^)

I'm skimming over the spring 2021 show and the mentioned games were:
-Bnary Smoke
-Kingdom Hearts
-Godfall
-Rocket League
-Rogue Company
-Core
-Dauntless
-CRSED
-Fortnite
-Warframe
-World of Warships
-Magic Legends
-Chivalry 2
-Oddworld Soulstorm

So I'm with Mor that it'll likely focus primarily on smaller games with possibly one big announcement. I can see PC Building SImulator 2's release date being "officially" revealed for June 22 as it was on that blog post with the Uncharted games.

Also, Goat Simulator 3 has been on the Epic servers since 2019, so the exclusivity deal must have been signed ages ago.

Yeah, this is what I'm expecting, nothing too crazy tbh, perhaps one or two big titles and that's it.

Very boring showcase 2 (3?) new exclusives were shown, LOTR Return to Moira and Shoulders of Giants were 2 of them at least. Not Epic Games Publishing, so timed exclusive.

A lot of multiplat stuff, many already playable on Steam.

Nothing new on the Epic Publishing front.

Yeah, it was a pretty uneventful show, which I am okay with haha.

We might get a snippet more in the PC Gaming Show, but likely just what has already been shown with Goat Sim, Alan Wake II, etc.

Mor was spot on.
Not to say I was right, but, again, if you saw the trends and how they have been acting, it was easy to guess that it wouldn't be focused on Exclusives but publishing if anything at all.

Goat and Witchfire were leftovers from 2019 and prior so yeah, that's the new way of doing things.

I'm more worried about them publishing, TBH. Those games will likely be EGS forever, right?

We expected them to be permanent until Alan Wake Remastered showed up in the Nvidia leak for Steam.
I didn't and I said so back then. I'll say it again, it makes no sense for a developer to not release on Steam since they start making money only once the development budget has been recouped. Good luck doing that on EGS.

edit: I found the specific post

I would be very surprised if any developer signed up for permanent exclusivity.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I actually like the emoticon-tag thingy. It has a shit implementation, it's epic after all, but conceptually it's pretty neat.
We just need to give people ability to add award emotes on their own reviews :steam_cleanseal:

I agree with store exclusivity agreements. Very few will be stupid enough to give Epic lifetime exclusivity.

But it’s a different matter with Epic publishing. Epic controls where the game is released in the same way EA or 2K would when they get a third party to make a game.

So for games published by Epic, it is 100% up to Epic if that game releases on Steam since they fronted the cash for its development and marketing.

It would be up to Epic if the publishing agreement contains that kind of clause. I have a very hard believing that developers would sign such a clause, unless they are determined to right off the PC version of their games.

It's possible that Epic's generous terms convince devs to sign such a clause anyway. Also, Remedy has been signing deals that disadvantage PC gamers for their last few games.

It doesn't make sense for me that Epic spends a billion dollars to keep 3rd party games away from Steam, pulls Fall Guys and Rocket League from Steam, but would release their own published games on Steam anyway. Crippling Steam is more important for them than making profit I guess. Fortnite makes them billions a year anyway.

I don't have a hard time believing they would sign such an agreement. Epic offers a lot of excellent terms compared to other publishers, especially if your game can sell through its development costs on console, at which point you start to get 50% of all revenue after platform fees and sales taxes.

The worst case scenario for a studio like Remedy signing such a deal is Epic winds up holding the can for the development costs of a game that failed and they see no further revenue past development costs. Obviously that's not ideal, but the risk is very much on Epic's shoulders versus the developer.

There have been dozens upon dozens of third party developers who have signed on with publishers both third and first party (or a blend of both, see companies like EA, Ubisoft, Activision and such who both run their own platforms on PC and publish on console platforms) for far worse deals for far longer than Epic Games Publishing has been a thing, and part of Epic's schtick is that they buck the industry trend and offer a better publishing deal than most other publishers.

It's standard for a developer to lose some choice over where a game releases once they sign a publishing deal, because at that point it's the publisher's job to sell the game in any way they see fit. We've even seen this with EGS exclusives where the developer has signed on with a publisher and then the publisher has then gone on to sign Epic exclusivity. Shenmue III is the prime example here, but there are plenty of others.

And just because a game appears on Steam in the Nvidia leak doesn't mean it's coming to Steam. Remedy could've been developing the game for Steam prior to signing with Epic as their publishing partner. And from Epic's perspective, doing their own publishing allows them to keep games exclusive to their store for longer while also recouping their costs indefinitely (rather than for the period of exclusivity), and from console sales (rather than just on the EGS).

I personally don't see these games leaving EGS until Epic acknowledges that EGS is a failure and/or Sweeney gets over his irrational hatred of Steam. You can speculate that a developer "wouldn't sign such a clause" but history tells us that many have signed far worse deals with publishers and I see no reason why that wouldn't continue.

Remember that Epic is only beholden to a handful of private investors and Tim Sweeney still has majority control over the company. They don't have to be as transparent about profits and losses and they are under no obligation to maximise share value and pay out dividends because they're not publicly traded, so if Sweeney feels it's in the best interest of the company to loss lead on their published games to try and bolster their store then there's no one who is going to be in a place to tell him otherwise.

Just a note here (you all already know what do I think about Epic published games and their future in terms of stores hehe)

There's a big difference between live service games like RL, Fall Guys which will generate tons and tons of money via microtransactions (which epic wants to perceive at 100%) and Single Player games which have a static price tag but in terms of revenue tend to go down rather quick so it is wise in the long terms to expand their audiences with those projects while pulling their live services ones from Steam as they would like to get the entirety of the MTX revenue stream.

You could also argue that they're willing to sacrifice sales of their single player games to make EGS an unavoidable platform for players, while mitigating the costs of doing so by recouping their costs across all console platforms.

I really don't think Epic is being rational here. Tim Sweeney has decided that Steam = bad for a variety of reasons. He hates that Valve can extract a cut of game sales, and he hates that Valve's cut eats into what Epic can charge for Unreal Engine and other services.

The strategy is still exclusivity, but by tying it to their publishing label they can recoup their exclusivity costs from other platforms that Sweeney doesn't (yet) hate.

And in the end, the whole point of EGS is to create an end-to-end for developers and publishers to create and sell their games on PC without leaving the comfortable embrace of Epic's products and services, while in the future giving Epic more leverage in a number of avenues such as:
  • how much they charge for the whole package (anyone who thinks 88/12 is forever, I have a bridge to sell you - Epic will say something like "the scope and costs of what we're providing has expanded significantly - you now must pay 30%")
  • the tools developer uses (if EGS becomes an essential platform for success on PC, Epic could strong-arm developers into using their tools and services - we're already seeing the beginnings of this with EOS).
This then has the knock-on effect of carrying over to consoles too, where Epic can extract their tools/service fees on every console sale too.

The moves are clearly monopolistic in aim, and that is worth sacrificing profits on individual games in the shorter term.

In my view, the only way we'll see Epic published games going to Steam is if they have to retreat from this strategy due to a lack of investors willing to bankroll this and/or a lack of Fortnite cash they can spend on this war of attrition to control the platform, or if Tim Sweeney decides the strategy isn't ever going to work and that they can better spend their Fortnite profits and investment funds on something else.

I also think at that point the whole Epic publishing platform and EGS would just implode in on itself anyway because they're clearly just blunt instruments to secure Epic's desired monopoly.

I think this approch don't work on pc, piracy exist, and pre-steam as valuable platform for costumers there was a serius piracy problem.

Right now, EGS isn't competing with steam, is competing with torrent, people which can wait and wanto to buy the game wait steam release, otherwise if they can't wait pirate the game, and there is like a minority (from apple case was 5%-7% of user wichi bought something on the store in years and probably with the coupons)

At this pace EGS are going to become an epic first part platform, and i think we are alredy there, take a look on epicgamespc, even the zealots of egs are not satisfied with the experience
