Weekly top sellers including free games seems kinda silly, no?
Weekly top sellers including free games seems kinda silly, no?
thing is that top sellers is revenue based so MTX are counted in, which completely breaks the inclusion of standalone purchases as top will always be full of F2P games with microtransactions that are extremely popular, oh well...

SteamDB staff made an adjustment and now you can see only paid games but even then games such as Naraka and NBA2K23 are part of the top 15-20 cause' they are full of MTX so yeah, I think I'm done with the charts as there's no good way of not creating a discrepancy between automated results and my manual ones. sad :(

So the "best" result should hopefully be 3 different top sellers?

1. All revenue
2. Paid games with MTX
3. Paid games without MTX

or 5?

1. All revenue
2. Paid games with MTX
3. Paid games that have MTX but MTX are not counted
4. Paid games that have no MTX and paid games that have MTX, but MTX are not counted
5. Paid games that have no MTX

update on real life stuff, and some game stuff to keep this in topic
[...]
update on both game and life, starting with the shortest, both literally and it taking the shortest:

spec ops the line was a remarkable experience, in the sense that it was a remarkably short experience; it took me only 4.3 hours to beat the entire game, but i feel as though i played it the wrong way - because when i started the game on the difficulty recommended for "most players", it was awfully easy to just die after a few shots - this made me change the difficulty to easy like a game journalist, but i feel as though the game wanted the player to die repeatedly in favour of the narrative the game pushes, something very likely if you consider that the gameplay in its entire is a parody of the third-person shooters of that time

the plot didn't work on me, mostly because i am in fact going through my own personalized hell at the moment, but instead of Walker blaming his own inhumane vile actions at a dead man in order to be a hero, I am instead going through the purgatory called "life", more later - but in general, if the player was experiencing the game for the first time without knowing the plot, they'd probably be sick, uncomfortable and everything nice that this game offers

in general, i'd give the game a 3.5-4/5, it didn't feel that good, but my god it made me paranoid as hell, so much so that i freaked out for a solid 5 minutes when a paper boat i made earlier was just gone from my desk with no trace (until i found it on the ground under said table), and this is even when the plot didn't work on me

if there's one thing i'd especially remember from the game, it'd probably have to be the iconic quotes from it, something i'll later use to introduce the readers of this thing to the next chapter of my irregular updates of life and games - particularly, my head can't stop thinking about this quote with this image attached to it

-------

anyways, here's the other part about my life: "If you were a better person, you wouldn't be here."
i'm not gonna ellaborate, but trust me, i'm feeling just fine amigos

So this got a demo, only on Switch for now I think?

And... yeah.
After being very disappointed in Chained Echoes, it was a nice surprise.
Sea of Stars is shaping up to be really, really good. Visually I think it's pretty obvious that they nailed the art, I especially like the big, expressive and well animated sprites, even for minor characters, and that the portraits are very in line with the rest of the game.
The little that we can hear from the soundtrack is great, Yasunori Mitsuda participated, but from what I can see, most of the songs in the demo (beside Coral forest) are not from him, and they're all very well done! Great atmosphere, and you can smell the 90s in it. The dungeon sounded very FF9-lite.

And what a nice little dungeon that was! Nice little puzzles, good secrets (and even an entire little sub area with a fishing spot), all very classical with block pushing, switches, combining colors to open portals... but all very well done, and the fact that the game just plays great, with characters that are not too slow or too fast, and can climb smaller obstacles and jump down (the city was fun to explore).... and without the physics being slippery and imprecise like so many others, it feels incredibly polished already.

Add to that the mandatory turn based combat that take some hints from Octopath Traveler with weaknesses to break (though it seems really hard to reach thresholds in the demo), reactive actions like in Paper Mario (that one might get a bit old, so it will need to be seen longer term...), all visible encounters that are not too frequent, can be started with an advantage, and you can even punt away mobs to get a better starting position... they pretty much nailed everything. Even the cooking aspect is simple, straightforward and immediately useful after encounters that almost all reward you with some materials (without flooding the screen with items like Tales of can be sometimes).

This went from "I want to play that" to maybe my most anticipated game this year.

Honestly, there's one big issue that I see completely ignored on gaming forums that gaming content-creators on YouTube and Twitch have been signaling about for quite a while.

The name is algorithm poison.

The words "Suicide Squad" are a straight up risk of Demonetization and Algorithm Hell to have anywhere near a video. I have a genuine feeling that this is going to be the next Phantasy Star Online 2, that is to say, gaming content-creators are going to completely black-hole the game unless WB is fronting a generous amount of money for them to do a stream or video of it, to the tune of "Make up for the fact that YouTube will instantly demonetize this."

...At the very least I'm reasonably confident the problems are really only going to be on the YouTube side of the equation (Because of the game's name), unlike PSO2 which is outright Twitch Poison because of all the outfits that'll get you TOS'd for showing on your stream on top of all the people using the Symbol Art creator to post hentai ingame.

This gameplay looks like shit to me but it's obvious they are modeling it exactly like Destiny where, yes, people do daily grinds killing samey enemies month after month after month. And that game is super popular.

People around the internet seem to think this is going to bomb like Avengers or Anthem and they might be right, but I think there's an equal chance it will find success because, again, the looter shooter genre is quite popular.
They are gonna need to work on a lot post launch for any of it to mean anything. They'll have to constantly generate some type of new static or procedural quests to get the GaaS stuff flowing. Its easy for the big games out there like Destiny, Fortnite etc because they have a large playerbases. What happens when Justice Leagues launches to a 100k concurrent and then a few weeks later drops to like 10k or some shit. If the game doesn't review well and doesn't have big playerbase at launch....then most devs slow their work down and eventually it all falls apart. I don't have faith in a large community keeping this game going. There are better and more established GaaS games out there. And you are playing as the Suicide Squad. They aren't even superheroes they are just C-tier villains who shoot guns. If this was an actual Justice League game it would have been different I think. But even then there are no guarantees as that Avengers game shit the bed too.

The one saving grace this game has at this point is if Rocksteady really overachieves in building this open world Metropolis. It will have to be very massive on the scale of like The Division or GTA. It would need a lot of enemy variety and dozens of interior dungeons etc. There would need to be a lot more boss fights too. It can't just be the main Justice League characters. They have the talent to pull it off but nothing they shown in the trailers so far indicates some super impressive open world. A lot of it is just jumping around buildings and samey enemies.

Yeah I agree that the success of the game will depend on how it is supported past launch and how they are able to attract players away from other GAAS games. There are obviously a lot of challenges ahead of it.

I don't think the game will succeed either. I'm just saying there's at least a chance we could be wrong about this. The success of games like Destiny or Division where you endlessly fight bullet sponge enemies shows that there is an audience for the kind of gameplay they showed off. Even I played Destiny for 1000+ hours but man, I'd be hard pressed to say what the hook was in that game. Some of the stuff like the dungeons and bespoke exotic missions were super fun to play but the bread and butter of the game are dull, repetitive daily bounties and a new seasonal arena type event every few months. People say the gunplay is amazing but I've never felt that it's particularly better than many other shooters and I'm convinced that most people are hooked on the game because of FOMO or just straight up addiction.

Over the weekend I tried out the new Geforce Now with 4080s. Running Cyberpunk on 90 fps 4k with all Raytracing options enabled (but with DLSS3 frame generation turned on) was certainly an upgrade from my desktop experience last year (1440p with some Raytracing, around 40-50 fps with DLSS2 on my 3700x/2700). Screen refresh was only 60Hz though as my 2700 does not have HDMI 2.1. Still, image quality was much improved compared to my desktop. Even looking up closely, I could not detect artifacting - did Nvidia switch codecs to AV1 already? I was impressed (that was on wired Gigabit cable).

I think I am gonna sub for 6 months when this first 20ā‚¬/month runs out. Seems like a good way to compliment my Steam Deck where I mostly play games nowadays. Saving me the obscene prices both Nvidia and AMD want for a meaningful upgrade to my nearly three year old GPU...

There is only one, it's the one Valve released months ago

But they kept old RSS which only had base game sales active until now.

What about Remember11? IMHO it's the most interesting one thematically but sadly felt a bit incomplete.

Hmm, interesting. I hadn't given much thought to GF Now for some time. Can it really play at 120fps ?
And what about Steam Deck, is there any way to use the service on it ?

Fingers cross the new Outer Worlds app package won't contain the original release so I can delete the old one from my library. Was contemplating starting it on the Deck last year, but I am glad I didn't as I want to go for 100% of the achievements.

Geforce Now on the Deck should work using the same workouround to get Xcloud running /w Edge.

As I said, I can not get GF Now running at 120Hz as I have no HDMI 2.1 output on my GPU, and the native LG OLED GF Now app does only support up to 1080p/120. The game is running above 60fps, but the stream is only refreshing at 60Hz.

while I dont think The Outer Worlds needs a "remaster", it was a pretty good game! I had tons of fun with it, at least. Cool setting, story and characters were good too, combat was fun, exploration as well... just a very good open world RPG.

I also really liked the absurd humor ā€“ I'm pretty sure I mentioned this the last time I wrote about the game here; but one of the DLCs had you solve a murder mystery and you could lick every piece of evidence ā€“ to the disgust of your increasingly weirded out companions; it was glorious.
You can also kill almost every NPC in that game, and it will still somehow continue on, with creative ways to nudge you on. One quest for example gives you the next directions upon looting the corpse of the newly-deceased quest giver, alongside something like "unsure why you'd want to fuffill the wishes of a man you brutally murdered for no reason but here's what he wanted to ask of you...".

sadly, it doesn't just feel incomplete, it is incomplete, the dev ran out of money :/
Ever 17 -> Remember 11 -> Never 7

Remember 11 was so cozy. But Ever 17 is and will ever be my GOAT VN (sorry Clannad)

Playing Ishin has made me realize that I'm over the yakuza series. This has to be the stalest franchise going right now, one that copy/pastes about 70-80% of the content in each game while only adding 1 or 2 marquee new minigames that get the limelight (business stuff, cabaret, go karting etc) but these are never really well done or in depth. In ishin the big new features from what I can see is managing a unit of troops that you equip as cards and you run the most basic looking, repetitive dungeons you can imagine like 30+ times. The other mode is a life sim thing where you grow crops and cook things...that's really it. The rest of the game is a carbon copy of other yakuza minigames minus stuff that wouldn't exist in those days like the arcade. Even the sub stories in these games have gotten so formulaic you can predict how they'll all go (kiryu enters situation, surprise twist the zaniest thing you can think of happens, you fight a few baddies who interfere, story ends with a heartwarming cliche about appreciating friends/family or not judging people for their hobbies)

This stuff was cool for a while but between 0-6, like a dragon, two judgement games, a fist of the north star game that played like this and now Ishin it's broken me. I need an evolution of this formula and world.

I tried to continue playing Forspoken. I previously thought that the starting sequence in New York had understandable quality issues with how the story was presented (due to being too ambitious), but those kind of issues seem to permeate the game. The arrival in the first populated fantasy city does not give a good impression. Why does the game jump to black screens and shift the camera angle so often? Who thought it was a good idea to lock player control of movement and the camera during extended sequences that make you wonder if the game has crashed? Why does the game open up a type of codex to show added entries during pivotal story moments? Zero thought seems to have been given to immersing the player in the experience, which is too bad, because the world seems quite intriguing. The annoying street smart lingo from the main character sometimes breaks the immersion as well, but I don't understand why reviewers are so preoccupied with that aspect over the glaring design issues with how the story is told.

Worth noting that the original Ishin was released right between Yakuza 5 and 0, an evolution of the formula was not going to happen here.

gog.com has added the original Doom 3 to their Doom 3 BFG package so if you own the game you get the better version for free. Of course if you buy it now you get both games as well, and the game is on sale for $4.
