Oy, wtf ... do I have to play story mode to unlock anything?
All I remember is you have to unlock Frost. The story mode seemed a lot worse this time, game seems alright. Only thing in it I hate right away is the new Kombo Breaker is DUMB.

More people need to play Dustforce. It really is one of the best games of the last 5+ years IMO.
Absolutely! It really is a fantastic platformer. The soundtrack in particular is a joy to listen to! It is very challenging if you want to perfectly complete the levels. but I didn't really mind that since I found it well balanced. By the time you reach the end game you'll start feeling like:

First... god dammit...

Second... is the kombo breaker this time the one where you can make yourself fall faster? If so I remember that being stupid good when I first saw it.

From what I recall of it, Dustforce seemed like it got way too complicated way too quickly, and I personally also had some trouble with the controls. The soundtrack is phenomenal though. I still listen to it on occasion.

Dustforce's controls are great, but it has a bit of... I guess I'd say it requires you to have fine control on your momentum, both on the ground and in the air? The almost stop and go motions of it are very unique. They work FANTASTICALLY once you get used to it, but it never really gets any less demanding. The game's lone achievement has only been unlocked by about 0.3% of players (myself included).

Yup, he worked at Milestone as well.
But I didn't want to explicitly call him out for his career and his stakes in this whole thing because it's not the point, is it?

I mean, personally, I believe these people have a vested interest in this "war", but I can't back it up with data like everything else I wrote in the post, so I'd rather just leave it be.

Also, let me thank all the mad folks who went and read my long ass post through Google Translate.
You are crazy, I love you so much!
I'm sorry if I came across as kind of a douche. My goal really wasn't to "career shame" the guy... BUT, in this instance you can clearly see that most of his arguments are not objective at all and don't necessarily reflect other developers' experience. In this case, the fact that he's made those games is important... It's like asking Randy Pitchford whether bullshots and enhanced "vertical slices" are ethical.

I'm sure he would have sold more copies had Valve decided to put a banner on the front page to promote his game... but he talks like he isn't responsible for his lack of success. According to him, it's because of Valve's lack of curation and other people's shovelware.
Well, back when greenlight wasn't even a thing, I don't think he could have gotten on Steam... and I'm not sure Epic are going to allow him either...

Oh no, it wasn't my intention!
It's just that I did think if talking about his career in the post, and decided against it.
Though, on Facebook, I'm totally bashing him for all the negative reviews of his game. :pleasedblob:
Fun fact: the only positive "pro" reviews I could find come from Italian sites, from authors that know him personally (some of them at least), so I mean, like, totally #italietta amirite :grinning-face:)

That's what I'm telling him on FB!
But he literally keeps saying that the Steam home is overrun by shovelware when in fact I need to click several times and change pages at least once to get to a list of crappy games. ¯\(ツ)

AH! Thanks!
That's actually a bit of an inside joke from many years ago, when the site was properly alive and well.
We got threatened with defamation charges twice: once from Vigamus (the scummy videogame museum in Rome), and the other from Francesco Carlà (you might know him for Simulmondo, responsible for a shit ton of mediocre adventure games and the phone-controlled games on kids programmes back in the 90s).
Unfortunately we had to remove both posts (for circumstances beyond my control :confounded-face:) and couldn't actually fight those charges.

Alright, that completes Spec-Ops: The Line.
What a hell of a ride, game deserves all the praise it gets.
This image sums it up in a nutshell (huge spoilers):
Also those loading screens get scathing (Huge spoilers as well).
Damn.
It really is fantastic.

I mentioned it in the podcast thread in postmeta, but the Watch Out for Fireballs! podcast did a great episode on Spec Ops that goes into a lot of the details and thematic layers to the game. It's a great listen if you've just finished it and would like to hear about interesting stuff you might've missed. It's been a few years since I played Spec Ops myself, but I really enjoyed listening to it.

Thanks, just started listening to it.
And the first thing I've heard is that... apparently the gameplay was seen as bad?
I thought the gameplay was a lot of fun too. Well, 'fun'.

#Italietta and #GamingJournalism indeed....

And I guess that everybody's game is someone else's shovelware... non-indie > high-caliber indie > ultra-niche or average indie > crude indies (think klik 'n' play) > digital homicide > asset flip / achievement & card farming games.

I wasn't aware of either Vigamus or Simulmondo... I can't believe you got threatened by them. Either your website used to be sort of a big deal or they were being really petty.

Oh, they are unbelievably petty!

Carlà, who is now some kind of stocks broker, was bothered by the fact that our review of his book on videogames from like 25 years ago, which was real trash, was the first Google result when searching his name, and this was damaging his new image of finance expert. (And I mean it, that's what his lawyer wrote me 😅)

Vigamus and the people behind it have a long history of dodgy behaviours and threatening whoever bad mouths them.

Downunder.
I've finished the first Ace Attorney.

I must admit, I thought people were exaggerating when they said the final case was super long. They didn't. I thought case 4 was superb and would be hard to top too, but somehow case 5 managed to wipe the floor with it. It was quite a ride and seeing Phoenix and Edgeworth dismantling the true antagonist of the case was pretty great. And the parting messages were quite nice too!

I'm going to start the second game tonight, after a small break.

i swear - no one reads ToS ... you literally had to wait 5 minutes with a countdown and read this stuff during that time! :p
Haha okay.

I can say that I tried Hades (Supergiant Games, exclusive on EGS until early access period ends) through the Captain Sparrow way.

It's a lot of fun and it saddens me it's only avaialble through EGS and even if I wanted to buy it I could not as I love cloud saves and especially playtime tracking.

Buying it once it hits Steam. It's a lot of fun.

With the revelations about how Epic Client is spying on your PC and even pilfering your Steam data without making clear what it's accessing and sending back to Epic HQ, yeah, I'm not touching that shit outside of a virtual machine ever again.
Any Epic exclusive might as well not release on PC at all, as far as I'm concerned.

I loved Spec ops, but the fact that they forced them to add that multiplayer mode was a waste of everybody's time.

Speaking of loading screens:

Spec-ops: The Line is pretty good until you decide to play it on the hardest difficulty. That's one of the most unfun experiences to be had in gaming. Gave up near the end because it was too dumb. Even for me.

I'll never understand the hate SpecOps gets for its gameplay. It's perfectly good 3rd person shooter with a great story. It didn't need to reinvent the wheel

I'm just talking about how you die in 2 seconds if your not in cover on the highest difficulty. But I agree in principle. On the other hand I would also argue 3rd person shooters are one of the least imaginative and inventive genres out there. So when it's "just another one" it hurts the game a lot worse then if it was something else.

I'm glad you liked it! Kinda makes me wanna replay it myself if I didn't already beat the heck out of it and get every achievement. Seriously wish they'd consider a remaster! :p

I agree on the praise for SpecOps, an example of an entertainment product, that only works as a game. I would argue even that far in the future it should be thought in "games history" classes haha.
Yup, I feel like due to the interactivity of it the "choices" become more personal. So when the game makes you reflect on what you've done towards the end it's a lot more... meaningful?

It's such a shame some of the more prominent shooter devs can't also try to make such effecting stories. Instead shooters end up being the laughingstock of the industry when it comes to stories. :disappointed-face:

Gonna check this out! Looks cool and it'll help me get another game completed for April! (Still trying to get 36 games done this year!)

I've finished the first Ace Attorney.

I never played AA, but I do wanna try it! It's crazy how you almost never hear bad things about these games. It's just all praise all the time. o_O

How long is each case? Similar in length to a chapter from Danganronpa? Curious if I could reasonably just play a case a day, kinda episodically, and slowly make my way through like that...

I would be interested what you think about the second AA game, Justice for All - once you are done with that too. The first game in contrast is almost universally lauded, it's the second one that is often seen as the lesser game in the trilogy (which isn't really harsh criticism, considering how great the series overall is)

it can be finished in like 40 minutes (and kinda has to - doesn't have any save system whatsoever)

and it's REALLY good too!

Cross-forum-posting my rant:

/rant

The lack of playtime tracking, cloud saves and every game in your library on EGS having it's own "page overview" where you see achievements, playtime, news and quick links to everything related to that game is disturbingly terrible and I hate it.

Even if I really wanted to buy a game, for example Hades, I could not do it due to the lack of information available for the game. There is just fucking nothing. Launch, install, verify, uninstall, auto-update and version number.

I mean, wtf Epic, get your head out of your ass and fix your goddamn basic crap launcher.

Even fucking Origin, UPlay and GOG Galxy, which by the way is not even mandatory got all those things.

Fucking crap launcher.

I need my info and things like "cloud saves" before buyign and playing anything

And before anyone goes "well playtime is not that important, I can handle playing games without it" well good for you, I need it.

Xbox Games on the Windows Store got cloud saves and playtime tracking (through the Xbox app), so that makes the goddamn Windows 10 Store automatically a better launcher than EGS.

Sekai Project was at Sakura-con; here are some Steam announcements.

  • NEKO-NIN exHeart 2 Love +PLUS got a release date and will be released on Steam April 26th. NEKO-NIN exHeart 3 is also coming soon, and it’s 50% translated.
  • Ninja Girl and the Mysterious Army of Urban Legend Monsters ~Hunt of the Headless Horseman~ also got a release date, and it’s coming on June 27th to Steam.
  • Exogenesis ~Perils of Rebirth~ is now available on Steam Early Access. (Full-Release soon, similar playstyle to VLR, even caught Uchikoshi's attention.)

And finally, here is a survey they are running for a bit longer: 2019 Sekai Project Survey

For VN fans on Steam, I suggest you stress the importance of Steam in your region/game buying habits. Mainly because of how rough it has been for VN pubs lately with Valve randomly cracking down on this or that.
