Steam Desktop Update
Steam Client Beta has just been updated with new features and improvements
Hello! We’ve just updated the Steam Client Beta with new features and improvements to the Steam Desktop experience. We’re excited to get these features into your hands for testing, so please check it out and let us know what you think. Here's a quick overview of what's new:
Big changes under the hood...
Some of the biggest changes in this update aren’t immediately visible; much of the work went into changing how we share code across the Steam Desktop Client, Big Picture mode, and Steam Deck. These changes also mean a quicker implementation and iteration of new features. One example of this is the new Local Network Transfer update, which shipped simultaneously in the Steam Client and Steam Deck.
And small changes everywhere else
This update also brings targeted visual and usability improvements across Steam - we've gone through and updated dialogs, menus, fonts, and colors. The main Steam header, Settings, and the game server browser are just a few examples of spots with refreshed UI.
In-Game Overlay
We’ve overhauled the In-Game Overlay completely. Originally created to be a quick way to chat with friends or check on game-related questions or content, we’ve built a brand-new user interface, adding new utility and allowing for more customizability.
The new toolbar gives you access to anything you may need in the middle of a game – friends chat, achievements progress, guides, discussions, a browser, and more. We've picked a couple windows by default, and you can pick and personalize the pieces of content you’d like to see in your overlay - settings are saved between games. This toolbar can be switched between an icon view and a list view in Settings.
The Game Overview is your one-stop shop to see what’s going on with the game since you last played it. For example, it shows what achievements you have in progress, which friends are playing the same game, top guides, news, and more.
The new Notes app lets you jot down... notes about the game that you’re currently playing. It comes with rich text formatting, the ability to have multiple notes per game, and can even be used in offline mode. These notes are saved per game and are synced across to any other PCs you are logged into, and are also accessible outside the in-game overlay, on the game details page.
We've also added the ability to pin windows from the overlay, so that they can appear on top of the game while in-game. Opacity level is adjustable, and only the contents of the window will be pinned - excluding the title bar and other extraneous UI. This new functionality is available for Notes, Guides, Discussions, and the web browser (yes, you can watch movies while you play games if you really want to).
Notifications
Steam Client notifications are now richer and more useful. The green button only lights up when there's truly something new for you. The tray view is limited to new notifications, and there's a "View all" page with a historical view.
Screenshot Manager
The screenshot manager has been completely refreshed - it's responsive, you can choose from large or small thumbnails, view recent screenshots rather than by game, and you can manage online screenshots as well as local screenshots.
Mac & Linux:
The technical work in this update also makes it possible to enable hardware acceleration for the Mac & Linux versions of Steam, bringing them up to par with Windows. You should see snappier animations, scrolling and more responsive UI. Linux users can try the new client out today! For Mac users, you will have to wait a couple weeks as we are hard at work getting the client ready for public testing.
Feedback
These features are all now available in the Steam Client Beta, which you can opt into by following these instructions. Work on these features is ongoing, and we would love to hear what you think. Any feedback and bug reports are appreciated – please share them in the forums.
The notes system is nice additionNew UI is amazing
I'm actually surprised these still aren't a thing. The gameplay recording in particular, they have had most of that functionality for years through their broadcast options, it's wild that it hasn't been expanded to local recordings and shadowplay like functionality.
- Gameplay recording and instant replay (with RAM buffer support and the ability to choose the recording framerate) functionality to Steam. There's already a Decky-Loader plugin for this called decky-recorder, but I'd love an official feature, especially as both of my PCs have the RAM to spare for high quality recordings. You cannot use OBS like you would a desktop in Game Mode on the Steam Deck or Gamescope, and since most of the available options for instant replays on Windows (Shadowplay, Action, and Radeon ReLive) all have their hard to ignore problems.
- An overhaul to the in-game FPS display to be more in-line with MangoHud and RTSS, as having an easily accessible frametime graph on Windows without any third-party dependencies or on Linux without messing with environment variables (in each game's launch parameters) would be nice.
It uses MangoHUD compiled with MangoApp support (Which was something you used to have to do with Nobara to get that working with gamescope-session) for it's performance HUD. Gamescope is used for the framelimiter and image scaling.Does Steamdeck have a custom built-in performance hud or does it use mangohud?
This feature in particular needs a proper overhaul. It's kind of embarrassing how Steam screenshots can only be shared to Facebook with one click and only one at a time at that. Nothing says abandoned functionality quite like linking with a service that lost relevance to the target demographic at least half a decade ago. Even consoles let you share screenshots and clips to Twitter with about 3 button presses. Valve should put some effort into simplifying the flow of sharing media to social media services and preferably allow you to easily compress/resize/encode all of it for sharing.
- Quick and easy photo and video sharing to a mobile device (like what the Nintendo Switch can do) or video/social-media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, etc). It's already a bit of a hassle to use Steam's screenshot feature to do this kind of stuff, and basically every other major platform (on consoles at least) has this sorted out.
Never seen red numbers this big before
Whoah, Jedi Survivor is $88 USD in Mexico, Deluxe Edition is actually $110, but the Deluxe Upgrade is only $1USDNever seen red numbers this big before
Tnx Epic!!!New UI is amazing
It syncs to the cloud so it will sync between sessions and even other devices. You can also access notes from outside the game. Neat. The notes feature in the new UI is amazing, I hope it saves these across sessions too.
It's crazy how the old in-game UI had been barely updated since like 2012
Oof...RIP GN's 7800X3D

"We have root caused the issue and have already distributed a new AGESA that puts measures in place on certain power rails on AM5 motherboards to prevent the CPU from operating beyond its specification limits, including a cap on SOC voltage at 1.3V. None of these changes affect the ability of our Ryzen 7000 Series processors to overclock memory using EXPO or XMP kits or boost performance using PBO technology.
We expect all of our ODM partners to release new BIOS for their AM5 boards over the next few days. We recommend all users to check their motherboard manufacturers website and update their BIOS to ensure their system has the most up to date software for their processor.
Anyone whose CPU may have been impacted by this issue should contact AMD customer support. Our customer service team is aware of the situation and prioritizing these cases."
Are people geniunely excited for Starfield? It feels like moded Skyrim tbh, at least from the few things I saw so far.
I just saw reports of that on Twitter and hoped you'd be more lucky with performance :/Wow, my 4090 is struggling to hit 60 in Jedi Survivor
You say that as if its a bad thing! I'm always down for some Todd Howard jank, I just hope its closer to Skyrim than Fallout 4.Are people geniunely excited for Starfield? It feels like moded Skyrim tbh, at least from the few things I saw so far.
R$2300 is more than most people make in a month here. Meanwhile the upgrade is R$80 on EGS, someone really fucked the conversion.Oh wow check this out
Never seen red numbers this big before
Just wait a few months, don't reward shit performance on any platform."I tried on ps5 and pc (4080) and pc was quite a bit better- ps5 is super unstable and lower res- also has tearing that wont be fixed by VRR."
It's shit everywhere
That's not 4090 struggling, it's your CPU. What CPU is that, btw?Wow, my 4090 is struggling to hit 60 in Jedi Survivor
Gamers Nexus is investigating the Ryzen 7000 CPUs burning situation, I guess their video about this is gonna be interesting:
the new $70 games are really worth it, innit? first Forspoken, and now thisNot even going to bother trying Jedi Survivor. I cancelled my download 60gb in and requested a Steam wallet refund.
Not paying £60 for dogshite.
5800x3DThat's not 4090 struggling, it's your CPU. What CPU is that, btw?
Also, this is some fucking denuvo nonsense!
Hah, I have the same one. If this CPU struggles to get to 60 then Respawn really fucked up/ didn't have time to finish optimizing.5800x3D
Do you want any of us to open the thread this month?I have been extremely busy so next month's thread might be shorter than usual, apologies if that happens
