Do people really play Beth games for the narrative? Admittedly, I haven't revisited any of their games since Skyrim, but I do think fondly about it as this very low-level simulation game, where you get to wander around nordic looking terrain, kill some random enemies, or get stomped by trolls into the stratosphere. Magical shouts and help some not-vikings beat the not-romans (or vice-versa) and all that. Very simplistic, but fun if you turn your brain off. Being a bit drunk while you play it probably helps.

Like yeah, they aren't deep RPGs, but if you want some open-world Isekai where you get to mess around with very shallow fantasy world, it's great. Starfield seems to bring all that into a sci-fi setting pretty well. The actual space exploration part seems super basic, but I am not sure why anyone was expecting Beth to make a game like Elite or something. Even if they were interested in something that deep and complex, their fans would just hate it or not touch it.
I think it's the complexity and deep mechanics and freedom of choices in BG3 that get's me. Starfield is a good game, but lacks the complexity that BG3 has. Starfield feels very basic in many ways. But I like basic RPGs too, so it's not a big issue.

If you're comparing anything to BG3 at this point you're setting yourself up to disappointment. The sad reality is there's never been anything like it and the whole industry will be playing catch-up to it for 10 years, so for the time being temper your expectations and enjoy what you get.
It will be interesting seeing what Larian does next as I even have doubts if they can replicate what they did in BG3.

I think Swen Vinke indicated that Larian is likely to make something smaller for their next game, and isn't interested in further expanding the company. It will be interesting to see where they go from here.

I know know bad bad with consolidation, but am I glad Acti went to Microsoft in the end, there were so many issues with acti and blizzard that I do believe and hope that Microsoft can fix. Start with healthy work environment for all! Let the Unions form! (which MS has said they will encourage)

Is this where I remind everyone about how many problems MS studios have had in the last few years? Bethesda still runs themselves and have had a slew of problems including that recent blowup with the trans employee they fired. Then you had the undead labs harassment fiasco too.

That's not even getting into the problems MS themselves have always had and will continue to have just by nature of being an insanely large corporation.

Well for one Microsoft has been saying they are pro-union so that alone will improve things. Microsoft has also been vocal about not having any tolerance for shady shit that has happened at acti and blizzard

Sure, but chances for improvement is still larger with Microsoft in the picture than not.

Hopefully this means better working conditions for ABK employees under Xbox.

I also think ABK getting sold was inevitable - Kotick wanted out after all the controversy so it wasn't a matter of if it was being sold, but to who.

The only real candidates that would be interested were the Big Three console manufacturers, Tencent and the Saudi sovereign wealth fund. Maybe throw in Amazon or Apple as alternative courtiers, were they considering a big move into the spaces ABK occupied. Google might've been an interesting one, but they're still licking their wounds after a bruising and expense foray into gaming, so I suspect they won't touch the industry with a ten foot barge pole for the longest time.

Sony going for ABK would get even more regulatory scrutiny than Xbox, given their vastly stronger market position making them better poised to profitably keep ABK games off Xbox and Nintendo systems in a way that just isn't feasible for Microsoft to do.

Nintendo simply don't do acquisitions that big, so probably weren't interested.

And I don't think the other two would be good owners from the perspective of ABK employees or consumers.

Apple would be a non-starter with regulators unless they agreed to spinoff King. Meanwhile, Blizzard + Activision would lose money hand over fist exclusively on Apple devices, which is what would happen because you can count on one hand the number of apps and services Apple supports on non-Apple hardware.

And Amazon would dilute the quality of the products and treat employees like garbage.

I hate consolidation, but holistically, if a sale must happen, I think Microsoft is probably the most willing and best placed to do it. So I'm not unhappy.

I have to say making a trailer for corporate consolidation is more dystopian cyberpunk than half the shit that's actually in cyberpunk. It's hard to quantify just how gross and weird that felt.

PS: Sonic Superstars from Switch is already leaked and ready for download, pirates win again.

I must say Microsoft is the strangest last hope for some of the companies bought, I can't imagine Blizzard in particular lasting too long as is.

I think everyone knows about the failures of Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 not doing too hot (while the mobile game is probably the only thing keeping them afloat), but the inner workings of their other games is pretty chilling.
Heroes of the Storm is already discontinued, Hearthstone is circling down the drain, patches are on a "maybe soon" basis and they've been lacking a community manager (and more) for over a year in the NA market, Arclight Rumble releases next month as I'm suuuure everyone knows about (right? There's a new Blizzard strategy game in 30 days, are yall excited?)...

The years of fuckery in "we didn't too anything wrong, it's all fine" mode is the worst way to (not) tackle those issues, and it shows on the end product.

I'm sure Ubisoft will fold in a couple of years too, with all that's going on. And by that point, it's just buying IPs with a corpse of a dev team.

RIP Battle.Net in a few years.

That's basically how Microsoft/Xbox operates, too. To this day I think they've never even acknowledged that the Windows Store has issues installing games.

I hope MS scoops up a a big Japanese publisher next, the whole ABK brouhaha has been extremely entertaining.

I'm at a point where I don't care anymore and I just long for more chaos and entertainment
I heard Kamiya is between jobs right now...

If Bnet does die they better put D2 and Starcraft on STEAM before it happens.

Love those games so much.

Maybe Sekiro will finally get a deeper than 50% off sale now.

It's a shame Kotick will remain there for the rest of the year, but thankfully the year is almost over.

The year is almost over! :rip:

Is it too early to put up christmas lights? All the grocery stores have all the seasonal candies in full display already, so it's probably a good time, right?

I've put Xmas lights up in October before, do it.
