Anyone still playing Battlefield 2042 in Year of the Lord Two Thousand and Twenty Four has Stockholm Syndrome - And the advice of "Play better games" in response to seeing a constant stream of whining about the latest update in a thread is absolutely not "Trolling", change my mind.

Like, JFC, Battlefield 2042's issues are just the culmination of issues that began with Bad Company in 2008, or fuck, probably even the console de-makes of Battlefield 2 before that, but I never played them so IDK. Anyone who continues to subject themselves to Battlefield knowing the PAST FIFTEEN YEARS of bad design decisions that DICE continues to double-down on is willingly remaining in an abusive relationship.

Anyway I'd just like to take this moment to shill Squad again

Was this even announced or did it just show up on Steam?
Either way, nice to see.
Seems like it "just showed up", like with the English localization announcement (for the Philippines/Singapore)

Effectively another one of those "Games so niche that the North American/European release is Steam only" like with Super Robot Wars.

Ok apparently the localized version is coming to consoles too. Everyone in my Discord group sorta assumed after the "...For the Phillipines/Singapore" announcement that EDF6 wasn't going to get an official NA/EU release at all.

not quite :p

Oh, yeah just looked up the trailer myself a minute ago and saw the logos. Most of my Discord group assumed there'd be no official NA/EU release at all with how long it'd been since the Japanese release + D3 closing their foreign offices.

EDIT:

Nintendo still doing the "American Box Art Kirby" thing in Anno Domini 2024

I think if you don't already own 90% of what you want from it (like I do) then this is a pretty good Bamco bundle at a nice price:
Wow that is a great deal, thanks for sharing

Bundle was not available in SEA, I switch my region and managed to get all the keys, no region locked keys

When it comes to "translation" and "localization" I am curious as to how is it translated into Japanese from other languages.

So far I think we have mainly been talking about JP -> ENG or other languages.

But what about ENG -> JP?

What choices get made as to what makes the cut and what gets removed.

After I finish watching it in JP I think I'll watch the English dub and see if they actually say those things in the dub (what they have as the subtitles)

I was watching more of Cyberpunk Edge runner and it's one of those weird cases, were yes it is an anime made in Japan but also the writing stuff is not all from Japan. Not only that but I would image that there is also cultural differences not only in Japan and Poland, but also with the world of Night City and what it takes influence from. And also those that are translating it in English? For all I know the original story when it was written was not in English.

There are parts though were stuff is in English though (the calls).

There were some differences, a lot of them I would say are minor, but I am curious as to why that is. One of the things that's confusing is why they call MC different names, by which I mean you will hear the JP VA call him "Davido" but yet the translation will say Martinez. I know that you will typically call some one by their family name in Japan and only when you are both good friends do you start to call each other by your first name. There were some other parts in dialogue were it sounded like they left stuff out. In English they said "PIGS" but in the JPN VA they said "NCPD", maybe they did say "PIGS" but still have to mention NCPD in order to describe them as pigs? There was also how Gloria tells David "Morning Miho", and in one case for the JP VA, she just says "Ohio". There is more that I could mention but I can't remember all of the other stuff clearly.

No we come to Japanese anime were you do have cultural stuff that is non Japanese and how it's represented in some other place. This comes from JoJo Stone Ocean, with Ermes Costello. From my understanding (since I have not watched it), in the JP version she talks normal. How ever for the ENG version they decided to change her and make he say stuff in Spanish in addition to English (this was not the mangaka intention from my understanding) but at the same time wouldn't seem that out of the usual for someone with that type of background especially in certain parts of the US were the story takes place. Is this enhancing the story with making the character feel more alive? Is this even necessary? Do the fans that are watching this liking it, or would it have been better if they had never bothered to add those things.

This is is not anime.

Some times you also have western media stuff that is made by people from different countries and sometime some things do feel off. An example would be the Amazing world of Gumball. The creator is from France, the writing team is from the UK, the animators are in Germany, the company that owns the show is from the US and the show itself takes places somewhere in the US, based of some stuff in the show it takes place in a fictional version of California. Because you have all these different teams, some stuff some times passes through the cracks. They had to change Gumballs sister name after season 1 since it sounded strange (it might not sound strange in the UK but it did sound strange in the US, Anaiese vs Anies or something like that) they would even stuff stuff like "bin" when they meant trashcan. You also have jokes that make sense only in certain places, they have this joke about them describing children and how they act, the punch line is drunk adults are basically act like children, but that joke doesn't make sense in the US since American adults don't act like that how ever it's very common for adults in the UK to behave like that (it's common going to the pub). Any the punchline that they choose to use for the show is "tourist" in order to be able to draw a connection to UK adults, other wise of the show was set in the UK they would have just said adults. There Are also a lot of other words and stuff that they use in the show that are not commonly said in the US but are common in the UK. There was even this one thing with a clock because clock are different in Germany? And instead of being 10:00 it's 10;00

Figured I'd share this here

Jesus, I really tried but I can't watch this. From the starting Steam is a monopoly argument to the weird camera angle and so fucking many words to say nothing. I'm sure there is a point somewhere toward the end, but no.

Just give the video some time, he's talking about a pretty serious UX issue in the Steam store with certain bad-actor publishers engaging in extremely cynical SEO shit.

Also for the record he hates Epic completely so this isn't some EGS Shill if that's what you're thinking. But he is certainly adamant about "Support Itch.io and GOG".

Anyway he's streaming Dwarf Fortress right now so I guess I'll shill him here while I'm here

Nah it's a bullshit video/point for the usual Steam hating clout. Oh no, people are using the tools Steam offers in clever ways to try and ensure the success of their company/studio/game/whatever, whatever will we do?! Whatever. I've noticed PlayWay (and a ton of other names/subsidiaries/whatever of it) long before him and they actually do have some decent games as well so it's dumb to write them off completely rather than on a case by case basis (even if that's gonna be 99.99% of their games). If the position of the game on whatever list was that important and the be all end all then clearly their prologues/demos or whatever would have been mega successful by being on there at the expense of others (lol at wanting himself to decide what deserves being there anyway) and they'd have developed the actual game itself over that success rather than abandon it, clearly there are different metrics to go by instead.

It's not a Steam UX Issue either, Steam isn't and shouldn't somehow by itself decide for the publisher or developer whether the thing they published is a demo or prologue or a full game, if they label it wrong and somehow alienate people or make them feel wrong about it that's on them. Even in the video responses people nod they avoid demos yet prologues show up, well duh, it's a way to market a demo to people that avoid them by default, if gamers bypass things why shouldn't publishers/devs and if they can't be clever in this way about it then aren't you going to complain when some metrics are revealed about how Steam doesn't push demos enough leading to their disappearance, even if you're one of the people that avoid them by default, just to hate on it again? Be honest.

He also goes about how you have x chances and more chances if you also do early access etc., well then developers that do early access are also stealing visibility from others, oh no, let's ban early access as well or relegate it to a different tab nobody will check at that point either, we're right and Steam is wrong! I'm sorry but it's the most popular store, there's litterally zero ways to make all games equally visible. You gotta invest in marketing and get lucky, being on Steam isn't a guarantee of profit, just a higher chance for it than on other stores (potentially, games have been mega successful without it in the past so itself it's just a tool like the tools it includes within it). Of course improvements are welcome and they've been making strides the last couple decades from not even allowing indies to greenlight to where we are now. It's been good. Anyway, gave him a chance even after the monopoly bullshit and the gem he started with "anything that shows up on the Steam store is by de facto the most visible game on the Steam store", he fumbled it. Don't fall for bs because of a nod to itch.io.

I played that Robocop demo, I think it's fine but feels more like an arcade on rails shooter than a regular FPS

Restarted BG3 with a custom character (Half-Elf fighter, found Wizard too complicated at first) because I started my first playthrough forever ago and couldn't remember a thing (thanksfully was only 1 hour in).

Goddamn this game is intruguing. It really just captures you.

It might be one of the best starts to a CRPG ever.

On the level of games like Planescape Torment (you wake up literally from Death). Which is a game not to be invoked lightly.

This is gonna read so weird, but I think BG3 has made Starfield worse for me. Starfield feels so...backwards after BG3.

I haven't really played much of Starfield and so far it seems like a good game, but BG3 feels lightyears ahead.

Do people really play Beth games for the narrative? Admittedly, I haven't revisited any of their games since Skyrim, but I do think fondly about it as this very low-level simulation game, where you get to wander around nordic looking terrain, kill some random enemies, or get stomped by trolls into the stratosphere. Magical shouts and help some not-vikings beat the not-romans (or vice-versa) and all that. Very simplistic, but fun if you turn your brain off. Being a bit drunk while you play it probably helps.

Like yeah, they aren't deep RPGs, but if you want some open-world Isekai where you get to mess around with very shallow fantasy world, it's great. Starfield seems to bring all that into a sci-fi setting pretty well. The actual space exploration part seems super basic, but I am not sure why anyone was expecting Beth to make a game like Elite or something. Even if they were interested in something that deep and complex, their fans would just hate it or not touch it.

Steam Deck is gonna save my ass next week. Got 2x 1-hour work journeys on Thursday.

Gonna bring my Deck along for the trip and enjoy some gaming on the go.

Even better, as the travel is outside my normal work travel route I basically get paid for the whole trip.

Getting paid to play games. Life doesn’t always suck.
