Call me out on it in a year (or two)

But I don't think that GTA 6 will massively impact console (Playstations, really) sales. (200 million sales in 2 decades (for a functional GaaS game in all but name) does not translate to tens of millions of sales on a console that will be at 75-80 million consoles sold at the time of release. with a trajectory of 20-30 more before the next generation)

Switch2 won't set the world on fire.

Will Switch 2 have backward compatibility? Because most switches were sold to play Nintendo games, games that were often released years ago or a console generation ago. Just look at the massive amount of titles that sold tens of millions of titles.

Neither do I. Most the people who'd play it already own a PS5 for FIFA or COD.

It will give a (small) boost (especially to PS5) but even if the boost is significative it won't matter that much, cause it's likely that the people that do won't buy many other games (which is what sony wants).

All things point to yes, that's part of the reason of why they overhauled the eshop

It's in german, but man i didn't know the guy that made Ori was one of those

I remember he was a bit difficult on neogaf/resetera

An entire diatribe about cancel culture and wokeness, and all that only because a gamejourno was weirded out by people bitching about Hades 2 for "being woke"

I still remember when he popped into the original Hollow Knight thread on GAF before it blew up. He tried so hard to discredit the game, dismissing design decisions among other things. It made me so happy to see HK become what it has. It has to sting a bit.

This included using demanding phrases such as "get it now" or "buy now" on certain advertisements, which the ACM described as an "illegal aggressive commercial practice." Epic was fined €562,500 for this violation.

The investigation also found that countdown timers were used on some advertisements for items that were still available in the shop even after the countdown ended. The ACM deemed this as a way of exploiting children's fear of missing out from suggesting the scarcity of items that were otherwise still available to purchase. Epic was fined another €562,500 for this violation.

"Traders must take into account the fact that children are more vulnerable to certain commercial practices than regular consumers," the ACM said. "Epic actually exploited these types of vulnerabilities. As such, it failed to observe the required care that can be reasonably expected from traders when dealing with children."

"Businesses that offer products to children have a responsibility to keep in mind that children are particularly sensitive to certain incentives," said ACM board member Cateautje Hijmans van den Bergh. "In Fortnite, children's vulnerabilities were exploited and were thus pressured into making purchases."
Hope this is only the beginning with more countries doing the same and obviously not just for epic but #fuckepic.

One of the reasons why Sony wants PC players to create PSN accounts.
Their MAU also dipped last quarter from 123 million to 118 million. Still up YOY, but the Roblox and Fortnite growth scaled back a tad.

Happy belated mom day to any Mama's browsing this forum. My mom broke her foot so I couldn't take her out to a fancy restaurant. Ordered Pizza and Wings instead and we marathoned the Fallout series. Me, her and my Dad, we all loved it. Was a good time with the fam.

Now I got my 4080 Super I decided to return to Cyberpunk 2077. Modded of course. Got 16GB of VRAM, mine as well use it.

4k DLDSR -> 1440p.
DLSS Quality
Frame Gen
Psycho Ray-tracing and everything maxed out.

80~90 FPS totally playable, and amazing to look at.

I was super skeptical of Frame-Gen, just like DLSS before it though it is some straight up witchcraft. I know Nvidia is on some bullshit with their pricing, but it's hard to complain when the drivers are smooth, and the tech is AMAZEBALLS.

Helldivers 2 did 12 million in 12 weeks. Fastest selling PS game ever....

And it was the first time Sony decides to do day n date with Steam.....

That just reinforces that their strategy worked. The stated plan from jim ryan like 3 years ago was that live service games would be day 1.

They put out a live service day 1 and the sales took off. This is not some gotcha on sony, this is proving them right lol.

Yea but the singleplayer games they release could also have this type of performance. It doesn't have to only be GaaS or Helldivers. That is the gotcha.

Steam is the catalyst for them to set sales records for their 1st party going forward. If Sony needed proof this is it. They should put everything day n date on Steam.

Its the difference between their games selling 5-10 million or 10-15 at this point in the first few months. The #s go up. The shareholders are happy :coffee-blob:

Yeah, think I will grab the Prince of Persia one instead. Plus I loved Dead Cells, even if I was bad at it.

Man, those Square Enix financials are dire.
MMO down because no FF14 expansion.
Mobile down because they suck at making Gachas.
HD segment not only down, but making a loss (double the loss YoY) despite releasing 2 critically acclaimed AAA titles in their biggest tentpole IP. And that is before the extraordinary losses caused by Kiryu taking inventory and cancelling in-development titles.
Kiryu is putting multiplatform on the agenda and also recognizing their release strategy is completely fucked (Q4 2022).
If this is not vindication for us for saying for years that their are an incredibly mismanaged company I don't know what is.
Now the question is if Kiryu's new agenda can right the ship in time, but I think this is only part of the problem and it will still take years before much manifests. Final Fantasy also has a severe brand identity issue they will have to solve beyond that.

It is crazy to lose money in a year when you released 2 big budget FF games.

That is a fuck up no other publisher out there can pull off. Maybe EA had years when Madden, FIFA and some Battlefield game were all trash but those games still bring in a lot of $$$.

I think Square needs to go the CDPR, Naughty Dog and Bethesda route...and give the FF ip to some big streaming service. Let them make a massive big budget live action FF series. If it takes off they would benefit greatly by the casuals running to play all the FF games over the years. Similar to how you see it now with Fallout games. That could be one way to prevent FF from slowly dying out.

Also I really hope the multiplat strategy gets DQ12 to release day one on Steam. And that it doesn't mean they put it on some consoles first while making PC wait years again.

Wonder if it's suddenly beta while they're rushing to rip things out and make it optional.

Personally, I like being able to link my PSN account because it means I get to earn trophies again. But it really should be 100% optional. Maybe give some bonus item as an incentive to do it or something.

Your burning Steam questions: Answered!
From in-person talks to virtual sessions: Here is a roundup of most-asked developer questions (and our answers!)

So far in 2024 we've hosted several virtual Q&A sessions with developers, and connected in-person with many of you in San Francisco at GDC in March through our talks and roundtables there. These discussions always encourage us to continue finding ways to make Steam even better, while also helping us understand the topics developers are hoping to learn more about.

We've compiled the themes we talked about across all of these events (along with most-commonly-asked questions) into one place to hopefully make it even easier to get the insight you seek! These topics include:

We find that these in-person (and virtual) events that we participate in throughout the year give us the ability to get even more detailed in how we connect; while also receiving valuable feedback ourselves. In addition to the below insights, you can find details on a lot of frequently-asked-questions in our Steamworks documentation pages.

Here is a quick summary of some of the biggest topics we covered, along with some of the most-asked questions (along with our answers, of course!):

How does visibility work?

Visibility and how it works on Steam is frequently one of the most common questions we receive at any event, and GDC was no different. We put together this video about Steam Visibility a few months back, and it does a great job of covering this topic and answering most questions.

Speaking of visibility, does refund rate impact that at all?

We heard from some developers concerned with the refund rate on their game and wondering if that fed into the visibility system of Steam. The short answer is that refund rate itself does not impact visibility of your game, but lower sales of your game can impact your visibility.

A higher refund rate is most likely a symptom of mismatched expectations by your players, or potentially technical issues that prevent the game from working well. You can read the reasons players are citing during their refund request as a way to see if there are bugs you should address.

Also worth noting: Steam does not factor conversion rate into visibility. At all. Steam will not punish nor reward games for how successful they are (or aren't!) in turning traffic to the store page into a sale.

You can read more in our refund documentation on developer refund reporting.

What is the RIGHT WAY to use Steam?

A lot of folks asked different variances of this question, and it's understandable: There are a lot of different tools and features on Steam, and it can seem like their mere existence must mean you should be using them all; or using them in some secret combo that is the recipe for success! But that's not the case: We purposefully operate Steam as a platform that doesn't require developers use it in a specific way in order to be successful.

Every game is different, and every developer is different, which means there is no "right way" to use Steam. Even more importantly, the way each developer uses Steam (the tools and features they use, the way they use them, etc.) will look different for each one.

Instead, we often try to guide developers on what you can focus on as you think about which tools and features make the most sense for you and your game:

  • Think about your game as a product. What does your game do better than other similar games? What stands out and is the key thing to describe to potential players? Practice this messaging, refine it, and use it on your store page.
  • Apply all relevant tags to your store page, roughly in the order that they represent your game. For example, if your game has a racing mode in it, but your game is mostly not a racing game, then "Racing" tag should be pretty low on the list of tags for your game.
  • Make trailers that show what it's like to play your game. Get to the gameplay quickly and be genuine in showing what the player will be doing in the game.
  • Take screenshots that reflect your gameplay. Show the UI! Players want to know how they will be looking at your world and how they interact with the game.
  • Be a student of the industry. Learn all that you can from other game developers, case studies, and by researching games similar to yours. What do those games do well? What features do they include? How do the developers talk about their games?

OK but surely there's a right way to MARKET my game on Steam?

We put together a special presentation for this very topic, and hosted it live at GDC. BUT we also recorded a video version, which you can find here (hint: YOUR GAME is the best marketing tool you have on Steam).

How is Steam looking at the themed fests, and where do the themes even come from?

We are still learning a lot about how to best optimize fests, but so far our takeaway is that they overall are adding value to the platform, both for players and developers. For developers, a themed festival is a good opportunity to draw concentrated attention from players who love the genres being celebrated; and for players it's a great way to surface games they may not previously have purchased, but from a genre they already love.

Because of this, we try to choose themes that are interesting while adding variety and covering a number of games players are into.

Though we intend to occasionally return to certain themes, we haven't yet determined what that cadence might be; and in fact, we are wary of setting expectations that any particular fest will always run annually. This gives us the flexibility to plan themes based on overall interest as we go.

When it comes to Next Fest, what is the best way to look at that as a developer, and what are your tips for maximizing success when we participate?

We host Steam Next Fest three times a year; February, June, and October, with the next one coming up this June. We recently hosted a virtual Q&A centered entirely around best practices for these events, and you'll find a majority of what you're looking for there.

How should I prioritize getting my game verified on Steam Deck?

We're pretty excited about Steam Deck, but the best thing you could prioritize would be to make a great game and make it play well with a controller; and you should be set. We recently showcased the top 100 most-played games on Steam Deck in the past year, and roughly a third of the games on that list aren't Steam Deck Verified.

We point this out to drill down on the fact that a "Verified" status is intended to communicate to players what we know for sure plays well on Steam Deck. There are lots and lots of games that either haven't been through the verification process yet, or that play just fine with a tweak or two, that have become favorites for Deck users.

Where should we go and what should we cover next?

We are always looking for ways to connect with developers around the world. We have a few events lined up in our schedule already but are always looking for feedback on additional topics to cover or places to visit. Let us know!

One of the things portables are great for is VN's. I just don't have the patience to endlessly click through text while sitting at my desk anymore.
Now I'm going through Stein's Gate My Darling's Embrace. It was heavily discounted last week so I finally grabbed it. SG has one of my favorite casts in any medium so it feels great to be back in the lab. Already had a few good laughs, the interactions between Okabe and Kurisu never get old.

Mad props to XSEED for not abandoning their games. They have had some bungled releases like NMH and also Little King's Story, but they did not abandon those games. And they pushed so many updates for their Falcom games for years. The releases on steam are way better than the original japanese PC releases.

I'll never trust SE for gacha/service games unfortunately. And that's totally a self-inflicted wound on their own part. FF14 is fine, whatever. Got like 12k hours in it myself but i don't play anymore since it kinda snoozefested for me with how repetitive it's gotten.

But the gachas shut down relentlessly from them. They just recently killed the NieR one before I could finish the story. :surrenderblob: Meanwhile FGO is like 10 years old and still going...

It was time to continue my Fallout — Fallout 2 — Fallout: New Vegas replay.

It's been a little while since I've played Fallout 2 again. I always thought the children in the Den occasionally picking your pockets and selling your items to the local shops was a nice touch. I decided to do a Melee Weapons + Jinxed + High Luck character. Maybe Unarmed later.
