Me: This month looks like a lean month!

Two weeks later...

Plus I also got Crow Country and Little Kitty Big City on Xbox. Woof!

My Ghost of Tsushima pre-order getting shot into space (by Sony itself, no less) really sent my "buy stuff" impulses into overdrive. :tired-face:
You just bought it but is Lossless Scaling black magic? I'm wondering if I can make use of it, I have an RTX 3060.

I can test it out on the weekend, I'll look for some suitably demanding game and report back lol.

From all accounts (and based on its own Steam reviews) it does work to boost performance in regular games. But I'm planning to use it mostly for janky games that either run in a window (ex. Cladun X2) or are capped at 30fps (ex. Tales of Symphonia) without having to jump through mod hoops. I'm also going to give it a run on some emulators, which I'm pretty excited about!

Something I was wondering, is there a good way to know which games have soundtracks that DONT use the soundtrack system in steam. Meaning it's just a folder among the game files? And is there a way to just download that folder?

This is a fun read. 5 years ago so before Covid. So much optimistic predictions back then.
It's kind of depressing how some extremely reasonable predictions would be laughed out of the room today.
  • Microsoft leans hard into next gen first party releases, with all of the new studios they have purchased.

Call me out on it in a year (or two)

But I don't think that GTA 6 will massively impact console (Playstations, really) sales. (200 million sales in 2 decades (for a functional GaaS game in all but name) does not translate to tens of millions of sales on a console that will be at 75-80 million consoles sold at the time of release. with a trajectory of 20-30 more before the next generation)

Switch2 won't set the world on fire.

Will Switch 2 have backward compatibility? Because most switches were sold to play Nintendo games, games that were often released years ago or a console generation ago. Just look at the massive amount of titles that sold tens of millions of titles.
Looking back at the day one sales for GTAV... it was 800 million dollars but that was between 80 million PS3 and 360s on the market.

3 day total was 1 billion in sales.

I don't know if GTAVI does those numbers this time around since Xbox is in the toilet and PS5 will roughly be the same as PS3 totals in 2013.

I think it will still do at least 20 million in first month tho. With game being 70$ it could clear GTAV launch in revenue.

But yea majority of sales will come long term from PS6, PC and maybe Switch 2 if its capable of running it.

They are dumb for not launching it on PC imo. Especially if Xbox continues to tumble this next year or so while GTAVI gets delayed to 2026. They could be looking at a situation where only a PS5 is on the market. That would be a massive win for Sony but Take-Two will lose out on $$$. And they will for sure be scrambling to do the PC port and that could lead to a shitty performing port too if rushed out.

The big risk is that the game turns out to be mediocre. Rockstar is a media darling so it will get 10/10 across the board but if its undercooked in any way and has slow post launch support..it will have a big effect on the sales/profits. Game dev takes forever these days and you kinda saw RDR2 have snail paced updates. I'm sure they are banking hard on the multiplayer and expect people to do the roleplay shit but you just can't assume/predict it will be a mirror image of how GTAV went post launch. You just never know.

Edit: Also I forgot about how big GaaS game are today compared to 2013. People playing Fortnite and COD 24/7 aren't gonna drop their fav games to play GTAVI. So that could hurt sales too on consoles and PC. Games back in 2013 used to be large events in terms of launches n everything. Nowadays people are mostly playing old games and in some cases very old games. Its gonna be interesting to see how GTAVI does because the hype will be crazy but a lot of it could indeed be baked in as far as hardware sales go. Even Sony recently said people aren't buying brand new games that much anymore. They shipped 60 million PS5s but only a few million here n there picked up FFXVI and Rebirth. So there is definitely a weird trend of less games being bought and instead more money being spent on microtransactions/seasonpasses + other engagement shit etc.

I dont think so... my guess is the only way to know that a soundtrack comes alongside a game as just a folder would be if the store page says so; but even then, you'd have to download the whole game first, extract the soundtrack folder. I believe the soundtrack system was invented so you could download just the soundtrack (which is then basically what you want: just a folder you can copy to anywhere and use outside of Steam etc – its in steamapps/music).

OK. So you want some five year predictions

MS
  • Will no longer be making hardware,
  • Will be all in on publishing.
  • However will be parring there publishing down to "Core" titles.
  • Due to mismanagement CoD will be on a downward spiral.

Sony

  • There next console will have launched.
  • However it hasn't surpassed PS5 numbers and looks like it is trending downward.
  • There plan to release 5/10 GaaS service titles will have failed due to them canabilising sales from the previous titles or just being crap.
  • The release cycle of PC games may not be day and date but they are getting closer and closer, maybe even less than a year.
  • Sales are next to non-existant in Japan as the last holdouts have moved over to Switch 2 and PC releases as well.

Nintendo

  • Switch 2 is a big success and bucks the trend of alternating hardware for Nintendo.
  • All the last hold outs that have stayed away from Nintendo are back on there.
  • They rule the roost in Japan. OK they pretty much do already, but they will be running rampant at this point.
  • And yet nobody can beat their own sales, but I think the percentage won't be as favourable as it is now.
  • Will generally carry on oblivious of what is going on in the market (a bit like the PC market)
PC

  • Steam Deck 2 will have released and the trend of portable/hand held form factor PC's will still be rising. It still won't match console number but still a pleasant uptick.
  • It will be the second best platform in some regions due to a mixture form factor of portables/pricing of the Deck
  • Kingdom Hearts still isn't on Steam. Vanillaware still haven't released on PC.
  • Nvidia has secretly been taken over by it's own AI. Still hasn't lowered the prices of their hardware as it is afraid it will get found out.
  • Will generally carry on oblivious of what is going on in the market (a bit like Nintendo).
OK some of these are tongue in cheek. Some of these are if the companies involved carry on down the path they are currently going on.

I presume those are Ubisoft Connect numbers. So across PC and consoles they have 37M MAU. At this point that is like 4 times less than Steam. And they still refuse to do day 1 releases. They truly hate money.

They have no leverage either. Who the fuck has Assassin's Creed FOMO? No one, their games aren't the bangers they think they are.

Humble has a Monster Hunter Bundle

It goes from $10 to $30. Starting with Rise, and ending with World, World: Iceborne, Rise: Sunbreak, and some extra DLC kits.

I mean way bigger companies that literally sh*t on Ubisoft from sky high (Activision/EA) figured out how much money on the table they are leaving. If I was investor there I would be sending them email every week screaming at them.

Tempted, I only want the expansions, tho.

Don't underestimate GTAVI. The game is going to destroy the charts and people will buy whatever platform they need to play it.
I'm less interested in knowing if the game will give a boost to consoles sales (specially PS5) but rather if those extra consoles will actually buy other games or will be a one game machine.

I mean a lot of consoles gamers just buy consoles for one game or one series (like Call of Duty, previous GTAs or FIFA/EA FC). It'll most likely happen again, but those people will buy up MTX and online subscriptions so it shouldn't matter.

I'm really curious to see how other GaaS games perform after GTA 6 release. The gaming industry won't have fully recovered by then and with almost everyone focused on one game, some games will have a hard time enticing players to waste their limited time with them. I think any game that comes out 6 months after GTA 6 will have a very hard time.

Huh, I'm actually getting into Lightning Returns now. It's not a fantastic game by any stretch of the imagination but I'm actually enjoying it. I'd never have picked it up again if it weren't for the Deck. Funny how the convenience of being able to play stuff on a whim makes it easier to give old games a second chance.

Its a console only launch so PC GaaS stuff will unaffected.

But on consoles yea...depending on when it releases it will devour everything in its path once the Online launches.

If its a Sept release the online comes out in October so COD, Battlefield and all other online/f2p games will be scrambling around avoiding content updates.

if there's anyone who has reason to do a postmortem on Midnight Suns, it's Midsummer Studios cofounder Jake Solomon. Solomon, who departed Firaxis in 2023 after the game released, was the brain behind the game's card-based combat system.

In an interview with Game Developer discussing the founding of Midsummer Studios, Solomon looked back on his final project at Firaxis and admitted his passion for the system may have missed the mark with players. "I think about Midnight Suns a lot, and I think about the card mechanic—which I designed, so I take responsibility for it—I think that [discouraged] players from even trying trying the game because they saw it and went 'what the heck is that?'"
Well I mean... it did lol
