Bought the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE, now I can easily push the pcie latch, temps are the same, cool.

And this guy advice works, can easily push the latch between my gpu and the nhd15, which is probably less than 5mm with the trim tool. $0,99 to save a lot of hassle (and possible damages) is money well spent I'd say.

I ordered a new display, the Dell Alienware AW3225QF

QD-OLED screen, 31.6″ size, 16:9 aspect ratio, 4k resolution, and 240 hz.

The thinking is abandoning ultrawide gaming again for better and more hassle free game compatibility, enjoying the higher resolution and higher refresh rate, and freeing up my AW3423DW for my home working office while using the new display for my gaming setup.

It will probably catch on if the various parties can agree on standardization of some kind. Right now it seems like every mobo manufacturer is doing their own thing, so the case compatibility is limited at best.
Other cableless solutions are in the works too. Asus for example is doing a PCI-E extra power solution that completely removes the need for a GPU cable. PCI-E already provides some power through the connector, so they are basically just adding an extra little connector next to the standard PCI-E slot that provides more juice directly through motherboard. So you need a specific GPU and a specific motherboard to be able to use it to its intended effect.

Personally also don't care about the clean look since I don't use windowed cases, but the QoL stuff that comes from having the connectors on the backside would be nice.

Making PC easier to assemble and less prone to dumb screwups (see recent 12V High Power connectors) Should always be applauded and encouraged.

Sadly it doesn't look like many manufacturers emphasize that aspect. I can understand that it's hard to market but making things easier to do pays off in making the hobby more accessible.

Now if only they could do something about the insane prices on some components lol.

Got the RMA from Corsair. So far it's stable, so hopefully it was just a faulty PSU that I got the first time around.

Finally actually installed the GPU. I had been putting it off because I thought it was going to be a whole thing with converting my case from storage layout to regular layout to make the card fit. Turns out I had forgotten that I did that last time I opened up the case, huzzah. Still, at some point I need to look into a new PSU I think. 750W is the recommended, and I have exactly that, and it's a good unit too so I don't expect any trouble. But I would like to have a little more headroom there in case I upgrade my CPU at some point. Also I guess it would be nice to have a new GPU power cable instead of this adapter cable business. I think Corsair sells a cable for my RMX unit, but I don't think I'll bother.
Speaking of, the new socket and plug is a really tight fit, when I initially slotted it in it seemed like it couldn't go in any further, but when I turned the GPU around to check the other side, it was very clearly not all the way in there. You feel it when it locks in to its place, but there's no loud click like the old connectors.
Anyways, I can definitely see how all the hubbub about the 12PWHR cables came to be, you need to use a lot more force than you think you need to, and really make sure the plug is in there. Best to plug it in before you put the GPU in its socket so you can actually look at it better to make sure it's good.

Graphics score went up about 80% in 3DMark Time Spy. It's not quite double the performance I used to aim for when upgrading, but to get there I'd have to go a tier higher and ~300€ more money.

There aren't that many issues with AMD cards anymore than there is Nvidia cards.
I have a 7900XT, and for the games that actually provide the info, I've never pushed above 13GB when I maxed out Monster Hunter World intentionally to see what I could push on the VRam. Anything 10GB and above is going to be fine unless you NEED the absolute max settings and 120pfs+ for bleeding edge titles.

In general extenders and splitters are fine.
And as long as you don't try to power like 8 or something hdd's with a single sata power cable by splitting it, there shouldn't be any issues there.

wow it's been a while!

I've got the itch for a new monitor again. My current one is great but it's Fast IPS so it's lacking something and it's also flat and i realised i actually really like big curved screens. I'm thinking of going from a Dell G3223D, 32 inch, 160hz, Fast IPS i bought as a stop-gap two years ago for £250 when my old Samsung QD monitor went pop.

I'm now looking at the new Dell Alienware AW3225QF which is currently £90 off at £910. It's a great monitor but it's £910! lol

Any comments? It's 32 inch, Curved, QDOLED, 240hz etc so it ticks all the boxes and is getting good reviews.

I have this monitor and I love it. Glossiness is not a big issue for me, but I use it in a room where the windows are on the opposite side, and I can easily control the lighting, so for playing content with a lot of dark images, I can adjust accordingly with relative ease.
One big, big issue is how to clean the monitor. As opposed to a simple matte screen, it's really hard to get small stains from water and such out. Using micro fibre and tap water worked well for me, though I know some people swear by distilled water (which you can get in things like pharamacies if you really wanted).

This is my first curved monitor, and I was surprised how much of a non-issue it is. I think the very gentle 1700R helps there.

The price is high, but in context, I think it's ok. You get a 4K OLED screen, with VRR, 240 Hz and decent HDR (at least for any monitor). That's a combination that would have cost (barring the OLED part) thousands of Euros a couple years ago, so getting all that for just a bit over a thousand is not bad value in my book. Of course, it is still a sizeable investment, and it makes perfect sense to settle for a simpler LCD screen and pay maybe half and still get 4K and high refresh rates and VRR. I will say that the perfect blacks of OLEDS really are special though. No comparison to any other monitor technology, except maybe old CRTs.

I wonder about burn in myself.
In fact I wondered about it for the new Ipad and someone told me that as long as I don't go full brightness for extensive periods of time (which I never do) I will probably don't have burn in issues before I need to replace it years down the line.

I wonder if it's as valid for windows on those monitors. I can't say I share the bewilderment of people on those blacks, but, eh, they sure ain't too shabby.

If you want to use the monitor for productive work, then OLED is probably not the safest choice. I use it for gaming only, and there it is almost assuredly a non-factor.

I always end up setting my monitors to quite a low brightness which i think will help with OLED, i also use a timer to change my wallpapers frequently so that would be good.
If i'm doing "Productivity" stuff it'll usually be for work so i'd use my work supplied WFH monitor for that and my apps such as Blender, VS Code etc are all set to Dark or Grey themes as soon as i can which i assume will help.

The monitor will be used daily for quite long periods of time mainly for content consumption i.e. youtube and DisneyPlus when working from home and then gaming and videos in the evenings though it will be switched off when i go to bed so it can run the pixel refresh fixes overnight while i sleep.

I'm tempted to just bite-the-bullet, get the monitor, not worry about babying it and just live my life. lol
The days of me expecting consumer electronics to last forever are long gone so if it can go for 5+ years ( hopefully much longer ) without issues then i'll consider it a decent purchase.

It's still a stack of cash tho, decisions decisions.

Not yet tbh. I have a decent machine at the moment 5800x3D and a 4070 Ti Super so i;ve done what i usually do which is read up on hardware, buy the best i can afford at the time and then forget about anything i learnt and stop looking at hardware again until i feel the itch to upgrade again.

I'm waiting until the 5X series is out and we have more concrete info before making a choice. Also, with the problems both intel and AMD are having with their CPUs at the moment i'm more inclined to wait a few months until i have a better idea of what options i have.

I'm also not really looking at the top end kit anyway, i still have a problem in convincing myself to pay that much for a single component. Maybe that will change when the next gen is announced and released but i think i'd probably still be looking at 5070/5080 level kit.

I'm still at 1440p and my next purchase i'm dithering with is looking at a new 32" monitor. I want curved, 32" and probably OLED or is it Micro OLED the new hotness and around maybe 240hz. To my mind I have no need for insane high refresh displays as 120-175 have been great for me for the last 10 years.

Unless you are still playing at 1080p and using usually mid to low settings, I'd imagine you'd be pretty massively GPU bound and not make much use of that CPU in most modern games. Of course, I'm not sure if you do play modern games much. For stuff from 5 to 6 years ago, it's probably still fine (though your CPU will be pretty much be idling all the time)

1. Nobody knows for sure at this point. But regarding the 4070, looks like nvidia at it again with the release of newer variant with slower gddr6 model at the same price. Be wary when picking this card in the future.

I bought some nice Spring Green/Minty Green keys with white lettering and they look great with my black F keys and Space bar but they don't quite fit and the LED backlight shines through too strongly and blows out the lettering. Which is a shame.

I'm looking at getting a new KB so i can retire my Novatouch TKL but i can't find any layouts that match it.
I want full keys, no nav-panel and a full keypad so it's not full width which ruins my posture and gives me aches after a while but still has enough keys for my needs and muscle memory.

I'm ignoring that i have 2 Ducky KBs, an Xtrfy Retro, a cheapo Havit mechanical ( which is my WFH daily driver and totally fine ) and my beloved decades old CM Storm Quickfire TKL Novatouch which is my favorite ever.

Been looking at the Glorious 3 96% KB in the last day or two.

Gateron Smoothie Silver for now. Tried WS Morandi previously, but I prefer lighter switches as I get older.

WFH and typing 80 thousand characters per day on average. Need some variety on my keycaps and switches to spice things up. I kinda hate that I'm becoming a kb snob now. Can't stand even a bit of rattling in my stabs, forcing me to tune my budget kb because that's all I can afford, that means lube and holee mod once in a blue moon.

Will buy this keycap set next month probably.

Also eyeing this kb to have a silent kb that I can switch easily next. When I have the money anyways.

You'll get used to it if you try, but I get it. I'm glad that my prefer layout is pretty popular right now. Exploded 75% with spaces between the arrow keys and 3 keys on the most right hand side for del home end. Having multiple keyboard with different layout just fucks up muscle memory when working.

Also nice to see what sub $100 keyboard I can get now too. Alu case, via/qmk support, tuned stabs out of the box, along with the now standard hotswappable switches, tri connection and large battery.

you can still find ISO layouts. Keychron and Glorious are decent brands for boards, and Drop has often ISO layout support in their keycaps.

For now... i'm still tempted but don't really need it so i'll wait.

I'm just going to upgrade from 2TB M2 to 4TB M2 for my OS/Steam drive as the WD SN850X was on offer.

I would like my setup to be:

Briefly looking at the tech specs on your mobo, the only problem seems to be one of your nvme drives will be capped at gen 3 speed.

I plan to finally retire the i7-6900K here soon with a 9800x3D build. I'm honestly surprised I've held on so long, but at 4K and limited by my RTX 3080 it's not so bad.

A lot has changed since my last build, so I'll have to catch up on some things. And I know I'm building for a Linux desktop, not that it should matter much for most components.
