The 2D snippets from the trailer have some Donkey Kong vibes. I'm cautiously optimistic.

As someone that played through Yooka-Laylee earlier this year I'm cautiously optimistic. I wanted to like Yooka-Laylee but the more I played the less I enjoyed it. This could be good but they really need to nail the feel and I simply don't have confidence in them that they'll do that.

And maybe a controversial opinion but puzzles in non-puzzle designed games are usually just time consuming and lack any real thought to complete so highlighting that in the overhead gameplay doesn't excite me. I expect there will be plenty of segments where you need a fire ability but it's behind something that needs water ability but that's behind an electric ability blah blah blah sort of puzzles. We'll see!

I never played Banjoo, but I was aware of the hype surrounding Yooka. Just reminded me of a bygone furry mascot era. After Mario Galaxy (and arguably A Hat in Time), we're never going back to that.
eh, you never know ... i definitely wouldn't mind it

Name dropping Donkey Kong Country seems risky when the current version of that series is the pinnacle of 2D platformers.

Definitely going for the Donkey Kong Country vibe. I hope it works out well for Playtonic.

Sucks to see no art style improvements. Gameplay is hopefully tighter this time. No excuses for the 2D sections, do it right or not at all.

I hope the gameplay is tight. Please play the modern DK games and just copy them. This has a lot more potential than their previous game. Lets see if they can deliver.

Each 2D level in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair has an alternative state that can be unlocked via actions in the Overworld!
Soak a level in water causing a lush environment to grow, or better yet completely submerge the place and go for a swim!
Each new state is a level of it's own, collectables and all!

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is coming to consoles and PC (60fps across the board!) in Q4 2019.

Seems interesting enough and I'm tempted to get it, but I usually get bored of sidescrolling platformers quick, I didn't even finish the donkey kong country games

edit: oh well I bought it, #YOLO (and because indivisible another game I want to get is more expensive)

Game is pretty light on specs, at least for the first 2 levels, on a 1060 gtx I think it was utilizing less than half my gpu at 1080p, so I set it to 4k, I'll probably play this until whatever next game comes out.

The game doesn't have much graphical options other than quality low/med/high/whatever, and it doesn't have exclusive fullscreen, however adding this launch option from the first game seems to work:

-window-mode exclusive

the game controls kinda okay? I was expecting worse after watching giantbomb's quicklook

nah, it's great ... i'm really enjoying it so far
Yeah I'm enjoying it, the platforming is okay and getting the coins is slightly tricky, and the overworld is decent. The only thing I dislike so far is that the jump spin isn't actually an attack, and that it's mapped to the attack button :p

it's not? isn't X (on the Xbone gamepad) the jump spin thing?

Initial impressions of my team (XBOX1 review copy) have been positive:
Yooka Laylee spinoff is really good so far. It takes all the best things from Yooka Laylee art/characters, Donkey Kong Country platforming, and even some bits from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Movement is a little slippery, but if you want a good platformer with tons of exploration, character, and LOTS OF SECRETS, this is pretty good. It's kind of mind-numbing to think of all the ways they've captured the very best of so many games I've dumped lots of hours into
So far so good.

The last dungeon is actually hard, fml. Could only beat 56% of it so far with 48 bees collected. It just takes time to learn the dungeon but I don't know if I have the patience.

Anyway I've completed all the levels (outside of the last dungeon) with all coins collected. I really enjoyed my time with it, it's probably on par with some of the snes donkey kong games, but I wasn't the biggest fan for those and didn't play them enough to do direct comparisons, but honestly I haven't spent more than 10hours on a sidescrolling platformer since who knows when, and I clocked over 20hours on this.

Game is full of content with 20 levels and 20 alternative version of those, the overworld is fun with decent puzzles and collectibles. I'd say it's worth playing if you're looking for a nintendo-like 2.5d platformer from the snes days.

It's a shame that such a well received game sold so dismally on Steam. I don't even think the game managed get into the global best seller top 20 or whatever. SteamSpy pegs it at 0-20,000 copies which is just sad for something with a 93% approval rating and great professional reviews. It also sold rather poorly on the UK console charts.

I think this is my new go-to example for people who try to argue that you don't need a huge marketing budget to sell well, and that "if you make a great game, people will buy it".

Just started but I liked how mellow the music became as you started the main stages in the game.
I also like how they designed it so you can try
beating the first boss right from the start
