Going a bit off topic, I noticed that the 'epic literally god because free games' circlejerk is getting huge in almost every forum. In a bunch of places if you dare to not agree with the 'steam is so bad thanks epic for going out of their way and being such a godsent' comments you will be downvoted to hell / bombarded with angry answers. But of course they are too blind to see it and insist that the only circlejerk is against poor egs.
Some people lie, some other people are simply just full of shit. Ian is so full of shit I kinda feel a bit triggered, which I rarely do. People like Ian in that Twitter thread and Tim Sweeney on Twitter are people that probably are quite intelligent. Tim is definetly very intelligent. Yet they are full of shit, which is just annoying.

Now that Borderlands 3 didn't set the PC world on fire, we will start to see a lot more attack on Steam, and a harsher defence of EGS, Some people will not admit on being wrong, and some people are simply afraid that Epic "generosity" will run out.
I made my peace regarding EGS by realizing there always has to be people who are lost cause in the population. They can fester and rot in EGS hole forever for what I care. As many correctly mention here, EGS no matter how successful won't harm me too much because their marketing strategy of targeting anticipated games will only be able to dent Steam's humongous diversity at best. So I can't be bothered to make emotional investment towards pro-Epic camp's unjust PR tactics since in the end they are nothing more than some random dog bark - something annoying, but nothing more than that.

), but it's best not to waste your time with these people. As the huge BL3 sales proved once more, the mainstream audience doesn't care about stuff that bothers us about EGS. Many of them also seem to be bashing on Steam based on nonsense they read on clickbait sites like Polygon and Kotaku. There's nothing we can do about this.
I'm not sure what you mean? BL3 sold millions on EGS. If a decent amount of these people start buying other games on EGS as well, this will be a huge boost for Epic and they will moneyhat even more AAA games.
I also believe Epic will continue with free games next year. It's much cheaper and more effective than a classic marketing campaign.
Free Games brigade is maybe a 2 edge knife, what will happen when EGS stop giving free stuff? They said they will give free games for the entirity of 2019, maybe they will extend into 2020, if not, they will have a huge problem.

It'll take a while, but I think devs are eventually going to become wary of giving away their games for free from the EGS when their newer releases start selling less because there is the expectation that eventually they'll be given away for free, so why bother buying them now?
I don't understand how free games align anyways with what Sergey talked about re: game devaluation.

Desparation, free games is whats driving EGS for now, not the exclusives, Sergey or Timmy really don´t care.
Also why buy a new indie game when you have 50 free ones in your library to play?
I can see them extending for 2020, 100%. Honestly I don't think that they will stop giving free games until they have a certain number of returning clients. Even if they slow down to one game per month.
It doesn't. Almost every thread regarding Celeste for free on Reddit had a couple comments echoing the feeling that with Humble monthlies and now Epic giving away games like this is pretty much a 'risk' buying indie games day one unless you want to support the devs.
And let's be honest, the casual crowd don't give two fucks about devs other than their favorite ones. I can see people that usually don't play much following a team like supergiant and coffee stain but those are exceptions.
I hope so. Humble and subscription services put enough pressure on indies devs to 'hand' their games and for people to not buy games day-1 or without a sale.
But what do I know, I'm toxic against developers after all and don't care about their situation.
I enjoyed that place before too, but nah, it's not worth my time anymore. I'm almost doing the same with /r/gamedeals.

You can get a boat-load of free games from EGS, occasional freebies (like Dirt Rally today) on Steam, subs like Humble Monthly/Gamepass/UPlay+/PSNow/EA Access, and countless timesink GaaS titles...and all of these things are vying for your time.
Just seems like EGS is contributing to the industry eating its own tail even further.
Free games are just as unsustainable as exclusives, but at least customers are seeing a benefit from the freebies. I don't begrudge anyone for claiming them and playing the games because free is free and this hobby ain't cheap.

I'm also pretty certain, some people are calling this place "Steam good, Epic bad". And that's also true. We gathered here for many reason, but one of it is: We don't like epic that much. That's at least mostly the "agenda" of the people in this thread.
Look, all I'm saying is: People gather around campfires that suit them. If you aren't welcome somewhere chances are you'll search shelter somewhere else. This leads to forums building circle-jerk like structures. Many people having the same "ideas" doesn't mean that those ideas are good though.
I think that as social media became the primary form of online communication we kinda lost the ability to talk with people who don't share our opinion. It's fine to have a general leaning but it's not fine to eliminate all other voices until nothing but an echo chamber remains. I have no issues with anyone willing to put some thought and effort into presenting a solid argument in favor of EGS. My issues are with people using the social media approach of dropping an uninformed hot take and bailing.
The uninformed hot take is about dropping an uncontroversial (but pretends to be controversial) opinion around like-minded people to boost one's social media standing. It is self-aggrandisation at its core.

That is Reddit, and that is what Tim Sweeney does not like about it. People do not vote based on post quality, or what the posts bring to the conversation. People upvote comments if they like what they convey (agreement, fun, etc.), and downvote if they do not like the post or the author.
I try to sort by "controversial" when I remember there are sorting options, because interesting things can surface that way.

I wouldn't mind things like reviewers whining about their missing review copies IF they made an effort to stay informed about what's happening on the consumer side.
But nope, they don't, and they get more and more divorced from the reality that actual players face.
Don't expect me to care about the game corps treating you poorly as a reviewer/journalist when you couldn't give two shits about standing up for the interests of consumers being treated poorly by game corps.
I do get review keys for games (used to review Sega games, so Total War, Football Manager... expensive games, all for free, even got collector editions with shirts and goodies...), but I thought about it a lot recently.

I totally sympathize with you there. I used to get lots of review keys for casual games a few years ago, and I noticed that even for the games I didn't care so much for, I was tempted to review them more favorably than not just because somewhere in the back of my head I felt that it was owed to them in payment for the free game. Once I realized that was something I was continually fighting against, I stopped taking the keys.
I do get review keys for my two Steam curations, and the ability to refuse or accept has helped me stay more impartial towards a game. I dunno. It almost feels like just having Valve in between me and the dev helps me be more objective about the games. If someone wants to send a key, fine. If they don't, it's no sweat off my back. I'll just buy the game myself and review it if I feel the need.

And sometimes you don't feel like it. It may be because the game is boring, it may be something happening in your life, other stuff more interesting... Feeling the obligation to do it is the opposite of what I need to write freely.
That's why on my own blog I review games 2, 3, 5, 15 years old. Because trying to keep up with all the releases is a lost cause. And "old" games may be way more interesting than new games...
