Personally, part of a problem to me, is that all of these games are advertised as being released on Steam, Valve dealing with this BS would be enough for me. If the game is announced as EGS exclusive since its inception it's much easier to forget about its existence.

I can get behind that, agreed. It's misleading and to be honest it is rather two-faced of the publishers and studios. On one hand, they tell us those deals are good for everyone and there is nothing wrong with them. On the other hand, they play coy and try to stave off the exclusivity announcement as long as they can, which shows that they know full well what's wrong with it.

Edit : Ascheroth made a pretty great point about the practicality of enacting this with late-stage moneyhats, I agree with him.

I dont really get the strategy to be honest. Do enough people buy games after redeeming the free ones on eggs? It must be worth it for them to moneyhat these big titles but i just dont see how. It seems like the vast majority of people either just redeem the free games and never spend a penny on egg or they spend whilst the big sale is on. I dont get how giving away another big(ish) game is going to get people spending on the store. Or is that not really a goal for Epic and its more about accounts active and user data?

How would you realistically go about this though?
They are announced for Steam initially. Until they aren't anymore.
Valve doesn't know about it, and the devs/pubs don't know eiher until Timmyboy comes knocking.
The only thing that Valve could do would be adding some legalese to their TOS that forces devs/pubs to always release on Steam at the same time as some other platform if they want to put up a storepage - and that just opens a humonguous can of worms that will propbably end up making things worse for everyone involved instead of actually "helping".

Geoforce seems to be big into Total War games, in strategy games in general. So I guess this news really hurt him, which is understandable.

I'm pretty sure the bad sales and reputation of TW:Britannia had a big influence on the decision to sellout TW:Troy.
Giving the game for free doesn't scream confidence either.

On the other side: Total War Games use a basic launcher on Steam that you have to use to start all TW games. Makes me wonder if Sega/CA plan to say goodbye to steam in the long run. They also started to encourage people to create Total War Access accounts over the last year (with free, small DLC). It will be interesting to see if Troy will be using the same launcher on EGS (with access to the other TW games).

This launcher and the TW Access accounts make me also think that Total War: Warhammer 3 could change stores. All they'd need to do is integrate their CA launcher into EGS, make people login in with their Total War Access accounts and check that way for DLC, and previous games...

Would be shitty, but... If Tim pays enough and enough people get Troy on EGS... they might conclude that it would be a smart move.

For me it's another grudge against Epic.

The game is probably terrible so instead of dealing with steam user reviews day 1...CA would rather just take a handout from Epic.

And Sweeney prevents another popular PC game/brand from releasing on Steam day 1. That is what its all about for him at this point.

The game was almost certainly trending to be a flop. Sega could see it, so they took Epic's cash. There have obviously a few high profile exclusivity grabs, like Borderlands 3, Control and so on, and this looks like one, but let's be real here: the TW Saga games are, well, not as commercially successful as the main games.

In my view this doesn't buck the trend of recent EGS exclusives being mostly games that the publisher or developer feels won't make their money back.

Sometimes they make the wrong call. Hades and Untitled Goose Game probably would've been far more successful with a day 1 Steam launch, but then others review poorly or just fail to entice anyone and chances are the exclusivity is a good deal. We're starting to see more of the latter than the former in recent exclusives.

It does sting, though. I'm a big Sega fanboy and they said this is something they absolutely wouldn't do.

Because it's free, I grab all the freebies. I have grabbed multiple freebies on EGS despite having played the shit out of the Steam version making sure I will never ever install the EGS version. But it's free, so why not.

Alright. I said elsewhere that I'm not hyped by TW Troy because of Brittania being one of the worst of the franchise and the previous TW Saga game. For 40 bucks, no one plays it 1 month after release, some buyers felt they made a mistake buying it. And I added : if Troy is not good too, at least, they will only scam Tim Sweeney.

If a game goes exclusive, just ignore it and move on. I mean, lately, the quality of games getting moneyhatted has taken a nosedive, so it's not like ignoring them is all that difficult. There's plenty of other games to play and it's really not worth the hit on your mental well-being to get this worked up over it.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't be against exclusivity (I certainly am against it myself) and I'm not saying you shouldn't voice your displeasure either. I'm specifically talking about people having these overblown meltdowns and freakouts. They're only making themselves miserable and they're certainly not contributing anything constructive to the discourse. There are many topics I don't care about, but I don't visit said topics and proclaim that people care wayyy to much about it.
There is a difference between saying that you moved on with the topic. That's great for you, and understandable. But implying that any other stance is wrong and calling some posters righteous embarrassing is beyond rude and unnecessary provokative.

I haven't been reading/posting here as much lately and a big part of why is because of the way this place has slowly been turning into a salt mine.

This thread has been actually pretty slow, nearly dead lately. News about TW:Troy naturally revived it a bit, but that will only last for some time.
The majority of reactions discuss why the game went exclusive (probably due to bad quality and the previous saga TW game not selling) and things like that. Nobody is celebrating that move, but that's also understandable. So, no idea what motivated you to come in and call posters in here embarrassing and insane tbh. Maybe you still care more than you realise?

I think that people being passionate about their hobby and wanting to protect their interests is a good thing. While I would agree that adopting a more detached stance is the best course of action if the EGS situation affects you in a personal way, I will always advocate against being passive against corporate bullshit and the erosion of customer rights.

I agree with you that after a year of eggs my care level has dropped and those games that take the money hat I just ignore and either wont buy at all or will get on Steam when they are cheap.

However this is the Epic games store thread and I think people have a right to express their feelings on the issue. We are all here because we love games and for many of us Epic is disrupting our favourite hobby with bullyboy money tactics and so i wont criticise anyone for taking it a bit emotionally.

The thing that annoys me with the devs the most is the wooly reasoning they give us to explain why they took the money. I think thats embarrassing. If they were a bit more honest about it and didnt treat us like we are stupid i wouldn't care so much and im sure others wouldnt either.

GOG selling AA and AAA games, including Bethesda games that are freed of any ludicrous DRM and other silly shit
Steam traffic and the diversity of games on there that continue to grow

EGS is a laughing stock now, and any worthwhile game they get, no matter how hurtful it may come off, isn't gonna change that. Because for as many free shit it gives away, steam earns 10 times more for worth of those freebies.

I personally don't care how much money Steam is making. I was always open to other launchers, but I'm against Epic because of their costumer unfriendly, forceful approach to establish a presence in the market. If people come to the conclusion that they no longer want to deal with the EGS, or talk about it and just let it exists in its own bubble. Sure, nothing wrong with that. But there is a difference between saying:"I don't care anymore for this reasons." and "lol, you are embarrassing and insane for still carring. I saw reason and moved on long ago and you need to follow my way of handling things."

People like to talk about things. Us talking about a new, rather unexpected exclusive deals doesn't mean that we are crying and scratching our eyes out or thinking 24/7 about the EGS. Something of interest happend, people talk about it for a day or two and than the thread goes dark again until something new happens. That's how threads about certain topics work.

The assumption that people talking about the EGS, when something new happens, are obsessed with it and need to see reason is a bit irrational.

Not gonna lie, this is where I'm at, as I'm tired of fighting things I can't change, particularly with far more serious things going on in the world

I'm of the feeling now that whether I like it or not, and even if it ends up only being Origin-like in success next to Steam, that EGS is here to stay.

And in the meantime I'm arguably cutting my nose off to spit my face on games that I want to play by refusing freebies, deals and waiting a year for the same content,

I think things are going pretty well. The amount of exclusives has dwindled and the business practice has proven to be disastrous for sales and toxic for the brand. Maybe it's selfish but there are very few, if any, EGS game I couldn't get through the Store or simply wait out, assuming I wanted to give those developers any kind of money at all.

I'm not looking to invalidate anyone's feelings on this but I don't need to care in order to boycott. I made my decision a long time ago, this isn't exactly emotional.

Third party exclusivity sucks. I don't like it, I don't want it to be part of this hobby and therefore I don't buy from Epic and I don't get their free games.
It's that simple for me.
I also stopped buying from Amazon, because that company sucks for even worse reasons. I can get 99% of the products from other sources, for similar prices.
But I'm not screaming at people for using whatever they like to use. And personally I do not care if other people change their mind, or join in. I made a rational decision to not support that company and I see no reason to change my stance so far. Maybe once third party exclusivity stops. I'll decide than.

I meant the forum in general, not this one thread specifically (although to me the entire forum has always felt like more of a glorified Steam thread lol). What prompted my initial post was someone seemingly deactivating their account over the Troy news. Not that I'd call that embarrassing or insane (before you even try going there), but it does seem like a bit of an overreaction. Not judging that poster in particular, though. If that's what they need to take care of their mental well-being, then so be it. I just saw it as an opportunity to share some concerns I've had about this community for a few months now.

We don't know why the account was deactivated. Could be a coincidence.
But even if it wasn't, who are you to call it an overreaction? Based on what criteria? Your own? What do you know about the background of said person? Or what's going on? What if said person is still following the thread or will do so in a couple of days?

All I'm asking you to do, is not to rush into a thread and accuse people of being irrational (like overreacting), insane or embarrassing because you feel different about something than they do.

On completely foreign news, it seems like Epic store might actually gain foothold in South Korea as its government are pushing for content ratings assignment to be mandatory even for online markets, which unfortunately will prevent most indie Steam games from becoming available as the evaluation procedure is quite costly.

Korean government does allow companies to apply for self-regulation of their content, but apparently only Epic Store are in process of applying for one while Steam seems to make indie devs (which are interested in Korean market) deal with Korean regulation system themselves instead of providing an alternative. Unfortunate but I guess it's understandable - one of Steam's strength (and weakness, according to some) is how easy it is for one to release any sort of game there, and making expenditure to ensure their contents are rated just for one single country must sound really unappealing to Valve.

It doesn't really matter what they do at this point for me. I don't believe their actions, method of doing business, or talk will push the PC platform-at-large in a positive direction. In fact, I'd say they're an outright danger to it. I won't support that.

It's not like we haven't been through this before. It's only somewhat recently that Microsoft's latest attempt to fuck with the platform has all but withered out. And it won't be the last.
