News Epic Games Store

What Tim says here is true.

I tried Horace and Impossible Lair that EGS gave away and then bought them on Steam sale because I liked them. I will also get TABS and Farming Simulator 19 on Steam sale which was given away on EGS.

Looks like same thing happened for Civ6, newly released DLC is on top of sales on Steam right after main game was given for free on EGS.

Out of curiosity, how is this 15% market share calculated?

-Summ of all accounts across all platforms and EGS has 15% of that?
-Total number of accounts on Steam vs. number of accounts on EGS?
-Unique logins per month on EGS vs. unique logins per month on Steam ?
-Total amount of digital PC sales/month in comparison to the amount of sales on EGS/month?

I assume they are comparing unique logins per month with Steam, but that's not saying anything at all about people actually buying from EGS. Not with games like GTA V being given away for free last month.

I don't trust this number at all.

But apart from that, I think you're right about monthly logins. Although as you say it very well, it doesn't mean anything. It will just be fuel for lazy journalists to say "EGS get 15% of the market what a success !".

Even if, everything considered, 18 months after launch, with so much money invested, 15% doesn't look like a success to me. Especially if it only mean active accounts with free games, not active users buying stuff.

And after re-reading the article, without mentioning any source (and unless I missed that information elsewhere, in that case please correct me), that 15% market share comes right out of his ass as far as I'm concerned. When you pretend something like that, back it up with facts.

New releases are naturally on top list, not much to do with EGS.

Though it was cheaper to get Platium edition (incl. base game) at cdkeys for $29-ish rathern than Platium Upgrade for $29.99 from EGS after coupon. That wouldn't show on steam top list though.

Was there any rule on Steam where you had to have same price across all platforms?

Moonlighter for example has a lower base price on EGS than on Steam

If you sell Steam keys then kinda:

You should use keys to sell your game on other stores in a similar way to how you sell your game on Steam. It is important that you don't give Steam customers a worse deal.

Otherwise, who knows? Some old games on GoG are cheaper than on Steam at least though.

I should be fair though: This is a similar situation to me and PS Plus, as I got to play some indies that I later bought on Steam.
In fact this is a scenario that anyone and everyone could relate to.
Thing is; what will this mean in the long term? Would you support that dev or pub again day 1 with their new product? Or will you wait for their game to go for a freebie or on a deep discount before buying it?
Note by deep discount, I mean sold for 50% off or more. 10% and 25% are OK discounts, but when you have other games to play, you would not be in a rush to get certain games.

Furthermore, regarding EGS Freebies, there is the issue of 'is this worth the discount or price I am getting it for on Steam/GOG?'
Say a game you played for a handful of hours was something you enjoyed, would you be willing to pay $10 for it, being discounted from its original price? Or would you wait for it to show up in a bundle or wait for a deeper discount, and put that money towards something else?
Maybe this is the anti-EGS side of me with these questions, but there are A LOT of games one would want, and if a game has a decent discount now, it'll hit that price point again months later, so you hold off on buying it...and in turn possibly another 100 users hold off as well.

This is probably Epic's biggest get of the year and they're giving it away for free? Okay I guess?

Epic better stay the fuck away from Yakuza.

That's a poor judgement on Sega's part. Total War games sell gangbusters on Steam and the decision is going to assassinate a lot of goodwill built over the years. Making it free for a day on top of it is basically asking people to not buy the game.

They are making the game free for 24h because they know this is not good, it´s pretty funny really, you make your game free as an Epic exclusive or you are pretty much fucked, lol.

Keep in mind that it is Total War Saga, not the main serie just called Total War. Thrones of Brittania was one of the less interesting game of the serie and people abandoned it few weeks after it was out. More people are playing Medieval 2 than Brittania.

Exactly like Total War Battles are shitty F2P games, as will be Elysium.

So I agree with TioChuck my first guess is that this game will be "meh" at best.

As mentioned, and like others in the industry, a key reason for exploring other digital stores is that we don’t want to be limited just to Steam. We also want to diversify our business. In fact, we want to get our games onto as many stores as possible. Long term, we want to expand where players find Total War. This deal gives us a great way to try out other platforms, such as Epic – to see what works for us and what doesn’t. It allows us to get a feel for the development required to expand to other platforms, and it’s relatively risk-free for you, too, as the game’s available for free when claimed in the first 24 hours.
Then release it on as many storefront as possible day one so you can get useful metric on where your customer buy your game. Releasing it for free at the release day will skewed your metric really bad.
Finally, we’ve got just one favour to ask – however you feel about this, please keep any criticism to the studio as a whole, and don’t take it out on individual employees that you might find on various social media platforms.). We get it. It’s unexpected. But they’re not going to be able to change anything, and probably weren’t the ones who made the decision regardless.
Lol.

Thanks Epic, this will just make my streak of not to use a single cent on your store still continue. I mean, why buy when I can get stuff for free.

Also, it's a SAGA title, so I don't really care about those games. Im in for the historic and mainline games.

So I will claim it and never play it. If it was on Steam, I would buy it and never play it.

You know, maybe Valve needs to improve their game after all? Because Total War games are money makers for all parties involved, and while it's just a Saga title, who can guarantee that the next Warhammer or Three Kingdoms aren't going to follow the same way? It seems like infrastructure is not always the answer anymore.

But Epic won't make any money out of Troy? They probably paid a ton for exclusivity and to make the game free for a certain time.

I wouldn't be suprised of Valve made more revenue from Warhammer 2 that was just on weekend sale on Steam than Epic will ever make from Troy.

It's also important to rememebr that Troy is a SAGA title, it's a smaller-scale side game from the actual Total War games.

The other SAGA game didn't seem to have done well either:

If Epic focusing on SEGA's RTS games keeps their Japanese titles from going EGS I don't really care. I was never going to buy TROY anyway so no loss for me.

Perhaps Epic will be in red after everything is done, but I'm more concerned with Valve being seemingly out of touch even with a publisher that makes a ton of money on their store. That's alarming.

Their RTS' is what makes them the lion share of the money on PC. In the great scheme of things it's much more dangerous to lose this stuff to Sweeney than any single Japanese title Sega possibly can port, including Persona.

I can definitively understand the worry but what is Valve supposed to do? Any other store, for that matter. Exclusivity deals are the opposite of competition. There is nothing you can do to counteract them other than outbidding the other party before they close the deals. That would mean transforming the PC platform's landscape into one where only the depths of your pockets to secure products to sell matters.

Only the richest will come out on top while completely removing the value and focus from the customer, differentiating yourself by offering a superior product and experience.

Sorry if I misunderstood your post, I think the only way to fight exclusivity is to keep being as good a platform as you can and never entering that moneyhatting race.

I'm really not sure what the endgame is here. The store is a complete failure, it's clear people are waiting to play the games they want the way they want and the only people that seem to endlessly boost the store only seem to care about free games and heavily subsidised sales (remember when there would be no store wide sales? Now there are permanent sales.) where epic lose money on every sale. Now they have to give away games the first day or weeks to even get people or more likely devs interested?

The plan was clearly more about reducing the cut taken on Fortnite on consoles and mobile by starting some sort of movement and now that that has failed we have a man that clearly doesn't know when to give up.

I wouldn't be suprised if they gave away Control soon, around before Steam release in august. I would claim the game on EGS and buy it on Steam and play it on Steam.

also, knowing volvo, they'd pay publishers to NOT make games exclusive .... and that sets a VERY dangerous precedent ... basically "pay us or we're going exclusive"

There is nothing Valve can do in this situation that wouldn't make them as shitty as Epic.

Nah. It's definitely not a single deal.
Even with Epic money Atlus still won't port Persona feelsbadman

Due to Valves philosophy, if they HAD to make some sort of deal, it would be a deal to have a dev/pub release the game on Steam AND at least 1 other storefront. They wouldn't care if it was Epic the dev/pub chose, the only requirement would be not only Steam.

I don't know, maybe they should be more active behind the scenes, at least with publishers who have weight. Or maybe it's time to be more strict in enforcing their own TOS, at least to a certain degree, like no false advertising unless the game is going to be on Steam day and date. It's hard to say something concrete without knowing what happens bts.

And once more, near the date of the Steam summer sale, I have people worrying about investing ''too much'' money on steam because of aggressive strategies by Epic and people wondering if Steam will be able to hold on long term.

For the past year Steam's been doing fine, for the coming months it'll do fine.
Here's what I want you to do: Go post a screenshot of the top sellers in your region. Not global just your top sellers on Steam

See that? Mix of popular and unexpected and well deserved indie hits. TW Warhammer II dlcs alone will make more money than the EGS TW game will make in 1 year after it releases on Steam :V

Let EGS and Tim waste their money, cuz they sure as heck ain't

Just checking but I'm supposed to be laughing at this sentiment? Not you, naw I like ya homie <3, but just the sentiment in this post.
Because hey I can always find a good laugh.gif to express my reaction to it ;P

I think the problem is that behind the scenes stuff is indeed something we don't hear about :p. It's hard to really say beyond word of mouth which is more often than not BS. I'm with you there in that there are plenty of things Valve could do better - as would the many other companies in the PC space to be honest. Valve is no saint.

I just don't think there is a silver bullet, a tactic that can suddenly make exclusive deals more ineffective than having the best platform, service and actual customers while their competitor, well, doesn't.

Personally, part of a problem to me, is that all of these games are advertised as being released on Steam, Valve dealing with this BS would be enough for me. If the game is announced as EGS exclusive since its inception it's much easier to forget about its existence.
