Seems like epic games store released the beta version on their store for some reason.
This is what the devs says on reddit:

"We were made aware that Epic Game Store accidentally pushed the test page live earlier today. It is very unlikely that what you downloaded will unlock (even if it is a placeholder build of the game) - or that the price mentioned was accurate as there is a lot still subject to change between now and launch. "

Sounds like it was an error from epic games, but who knows if the devs put a wrong release date or didnt update it.

It was trying to own the dev pipeline to the metaverse. You could ask the same questions about Bandcamp, Mediatonic and the Cary Towne Center. The obvious answer is they were flush with money for years and went on a shopping spree. Fortnite declined in popularity and has sadly made a recovery and they didn't have as much money to piss away.

I suspect Epic already realized any of the value they could extract from these companies and otherwise want to sell them off before their perceived value crashes thanks to AI.

Still, I think it shows Epic has questionably managed the company. They went on a shopping spree to have supporting reasons for their lawsuits (e.g. Bandcamp) and their desire to control every part of the game dev pipeline (e.g. these purchases).

FN has partly recovered, but the cracks have definitely shown.

I suppose they will now roll out their AI vibe coded social update from their one remaining EGS employee in the next few days or weeks.
