The federated timeline is based on what other people on your server is following or boosting
Following a hashtag should show all posts from the hashtag based on local + federated timeline

always awkward clicking on follow on people that needed requests, I always miss the lock icon :P

Ivory is out, people seem to love it, but the sub version is really expensive. I don't use 3rd party stuff so don't know what they do that people love, and I'm no power user.

I think I've found a few issues that doesn't feel 100% right with the open nature of apps built around activity pub. Notably Pixelfed and Tilvids. Since they are pretty much made by one person it gets tied very much to that person. Like for pixelfed when you go to see trending users, of course you mostly see both the pixelfed account and the account of dev and kind of feel iffy. And for Tilvids their social media posts have been pretty off-putting, they have so many posts shitting on other social media things. I mean I like posts shitting on things as much as the next person, but not from a platform, it feels very insecure, like if you need to shit on others to make yourself look better then yeah that's a no from me.

TILvids isn't the platform, PeerTube is :p TILvids is just one of the PeerTube instances ;)

as for Pixelfed - it might be made by one person, but it's still open source - that's the massive difference here

There are ways to get the new versions too, naturally.

But there's something to be said about the convenience of knowing that this old ass version will forever and ever keep working just as you expect it to.

Reminds me though, I should check if there are any new and interesting features in whatever is the newest photoshop and whether I should update.

edit: Bug fixes, no new features since my current version.

I suppose Tweetduck is going to stop working when that happens since it's really just a fancy wrapper for tweetdeck.

I'm hoping that the tweetduck author will make a similar app that uses one of the better browser based mastodon interfaces. He hasn't said as much yet though, only that "If I end up making an app for the platform that Must Not Be Named, you will hear about it there (on his website), on my blog, and on discord".

Here's hoping.

I installed Megalodon on my phone and I'm liking it so far. It feels fluid scrolling through and is easy to use as someone who isn't a power user.

If I boost something from an instance that's blocked by my followers' instance, will those posts show up on their timeline?

Also I wish there was a quick mute/unmute button, I follow bots for news but I sometimes mute them so they don't spam my timeline.

well you can mute directly from their profile (and mutes can even be timed), that's pretty quick, i think?

I've followed some artists that are making alt account from the pixiv instance, wonder if something is happening there lol, but I don't want to log into it, that site is sus as hell.

i think i remember something about it being bought out by some investment company or something like that
 
So I'm guessing misskey.art is a pretty new instance? I saw an influx of new users from there posting art. I have no idea what Misskey is lol

Slowly solving this "ALL the artists are on twitter" problem :p

Misskey is just another federated (ActivityPub) platform, like Mastodon it can interact with other federated platforms in the fediverse.

Also still waiting for that tumblr activitypub implementation, and firefox instance. At the least if there's a Firefox instance I can tell people to just log into that if they use it.

yeah, they're both coming soon™ :P well, i believe FF said it would take them a few months to "get it right" or something like that, but most likely happening this year
 
I've steadily been able to find at least several new artists to follow daily on Mastodon, the fedibird and misskey.art instances are where most of them are on.

I don't think I really have any reason for twitter moving forward.

Flipboard is the latest service to embrace Mastodon as Twitter becomes increasingly chaotic under Elon Musk. The news reading app, whose founder was once on Twitter’s board of directors, is now going all in on the Fediverse.

The company announced that it’s integrating Mastodon into its main app, so that users can browse their feeds much the way they can “flip” through their Twitter timelines. Flipboard is also starting up its own Mastodon instance in an effort to encourage broader adoption among its user base.


According to Flipboard CEO Mike McCue, the two updates are the first “very initial steps” of a broader plan to embrace the decentralized social networking protocols that have been popularized by Mastodon over the last year. Instead of relying on the “proprietary social graphs” of services like Twitter and Facebook — both of which have become increasingly hostile to outside developers — Flipboard could instead be centered around ActivityPub, the open source protocol that powers Mastodon and the rest of the decentralized services that make up the “Fediverse.”

thanks for accepting my request to join the Meta Mastadon server. I have had one account a while back, but I was in a quite empty server then. Still I have no idea on how Mastadon compares with Twitter except that Mastadon is decentralized.

It is a bit hard to find interesting people to follow, since I think users of Mastadon are separated from each other depending on which server they are in right? :unsure:

they are not, no :) and you can just search for hashtags - that's the easiest way to find interesting people to follow :D

You can follow any people across the fediverse as long as the server you are on dont have them banned.

still it feels there are some learning gap when coming from Twitter, but I'll see what Mastadon has to offer ;)
