|OT| MetaConsole | Here we can talk about anything regarding consoles

I imagine a mouse-shaped 3rd party joycon won't be hard to devise. Or maybe some adapter that makes some standard mouse connect to joycon bluetooth. Maybe they have to be limited to the dpi of the standard joycons but other than that I guess you could get any form factor more comfortable for you.
We can only hope.

Switch 2 console (no bundle) is 620$ and Donkey Kong is between 88$-92$ in Norway.

This is dead on arrival.

I’m giving serious thought to replacing my PS5 Slim and Series X with a PS5 Pro and 360 Slim.

Most of my Series X games either have a PS5 version or are 360 games anyway. About the only game I’d be losing is Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and I believe all the games from that pack have 360 versions anyway.

I could sell the above and replace all the games with like for like PS/360 versions and have cash to spare.

“As we look at Nintendo Switch 2 and you think about the feature sets that I talked about … we believe that the pricing is appropriate for the value of the machine and the gameplay experience overall. We recognize there are some people that may not be able to afford [the Switch 2’s] price point. That’s why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available, so [people] still have an opportunity to come into our gaming universe, be a part of these characters in these worlds, and see value, if you will, in whatever rung of the platform they come in.”

Feels like day by day there a new statement or a bit of news about the Switch 2 that makes it more unappealing.

Trump has put a 90 day pause on tariffs for certain countries (which I assume/hope Vietnam is one of them) and is reducing it to 10% afterwards. So maybe Nintendo will at least get to sell the launch batch tariff-free and, best case scenario for consumers, eat the 10% markup (assuming he doesn't do any more schizo shit and we all know that's not gonna happen lol).

Wait, so it's 0 tariffs until then and then 10% or 10% over what it was or is this a complete 180 or what the hell is going on? I thought only our politicians are such complete and utter imbeciles and jokes that somehow manage to convince their likeminded folks to vote for them and destroy everyone's life (well compared to what it could be otherwise), but the rest of the world doing the same is, maybe making me feel better about ours on some level, but overall pretty grim...

Of course I doubt any products change their MSRP for the period, just gonna enjoy the extra profit... Unless it's a place where the tax is added on top afterwards.

Great use of mouse controls for a party game on Switch 2:

Gonna finally play this, version 1.0 released after a few RCs in the past few days.

This translation project had some controversy as it spawned off an old open source public alpha from other developers without asking them (they'd say no) and while they then claimed they've still been working on it on their own without updates for like a freaking decade but whatever, they shouldn't have open sourced it if they didn't want folks to edit it and this guy did a lot to complete/fix/polish it alongside other folks who have done other great projects for Saturn and other systems, if the other one releases and is deemed way better I'll replay it, for now I can finally play the damn game before I die and to me it's the best playing Vanillaware (ish) game too, not that it's a perfect game or without issues, especially speed wise nowadays, but I just love the feel of its systems and overall look.

Been thinking about some of the mistakes Nintendo have made with the Switch 2 so far, and it’s not great.

They definitely have comms, common sense and design issues with this system.

There’s plenty to scratch your head about with Switch 2, but the thing that baffles me the most is the thinking around storage.

Why have Nintendo gone for expensive non-proprietary storage?

If you want to jack up the storage cost, make it proprietary like the Vita or Xbox (I’m obviously not saying this is a good idea). I don’t see the sense in making their users buy expensive SD cards that £ per GB and £ per read/write are shit.

If I were looking at Switch 2 and thinking how I’d do this, I’d:
  • use user-replaceable NVMe instead of soldered storage and SD (they are literally cheaper)
  • use slower/cheaper game cards that users need to install games to storage from rather than putting fast storage in every card printed
  • avoid the use of this stupid game key card stuff by giving publishers cheap storage to ship the games on

I find their approach incredibly baffling. And that’s just the storage side of things. There’s a whole bunch of other things that feel like they have botched comms and design on, like:
  • this weird 15fps camera
  • a button that requires a subscription, and feels functionally useless even if you have one
  • exorbitantly priced games
  • Switch 2 edition ambiguity on physical (later resolved, after an answer was dragged out of Nintendo)
  • this whole VRR thing
  • things I can’t even think of right now

I have one on pre-order - heck, I had a Wii U on pre-order - but it’s hard to feel optimistic about this system.

About the only thing they haven’t fucked up on is I have no doubt in my mind that the less informed users know what it is versus the original. My concern is they’ll look at it and say they don’t want it.

I wouldn't be shocked if we see a similar phenomenon with the PS4 where there is still a lot people who are going to stick with the Switch 1. I overall believe that the Switch 2 will sell similarly to the 3DS. It will be successful but not as successful as the Switch 1.

5+ years after we finally got to play the first game, the Sakura Wars 2 fan translation is out, in both English and Portuguese.

These spin offs were also previously translated.

Here's hoping 3 & 4 also get done, 3 was a huge next gen upgrade on Dreamcast, 4 was a bit short charged as a homage/final send off (be4 5 was a thing) but still ace with amazing gfx. Also Sakura Wars GB2 which is radically different, a dungeon crawling RPG far more expansive than the first portable adventure was.
